Hairdressers prices

I've stopped going to my hairdresser as she charges me £22 to have snippets off my ends and wants £140 for highlights.
Does anyone else think this is expensive.

Not sure what exactly you’re basing that on? @Yeezytiger
Are you a hairdresser?
There are so many different levels of products available alongside better trained stylists etc. if you are paying more it’s likely to have good reason behind it. A decent salon will also not offer dry cuts Confused

£145 highlights, root colour, toner, olaplex cut and blow dry/products. Cup of tea and biscuit.

by a qualified stylist who knows what she’s doing. You get what you pay for.
South Birmingham area.

That would be at least £250 here!

Soproudoflionesses · 14/08/2022 23:53

Stopped getting highlights as the price is too much to warrant having done regularly.

£35 for wash, cut and finish and have cut this down to every 2 months.

Expect it varies from area to area.

shinynewapple22 · 14/08/2022 23:59

The £140 for a colour seems out of proportion to the £22 for a trim .

imshapedlikeatoenail · 15/08/2022 00:09

I don’t think that’s badly priced.

Its expensive to run a business and I speak from experience. By the time the over heads have been extracted from that £22, there isn’t a huge amount left. Not only does it have to cover rent, card machine, product cost etc it’s also has taken into account covering their holiday leave, sickness, no shows, quiet periods.

Not to mention not all quality of work is the same. You may be getting a £10 cut but could well be that it’s £10 quality.

I find it annoying how some trades are deemed worthy of their pay and more yet others aren’t. The hairdresser is just trying to earn a living like the rest of us.

HoneyFlowers · 15/08/2022 00:15

I pay £38 for a wash, cut and blow dry.

UniCred1 · 15/08/2022 12:24

I find this argument of “ oh don’t forget their training and expertise” ridiculous! That’s their job. Surely they should be trained and experienced otherwise why would they open salons and work on people’s hair. I’m a teacher, I spent around 30K at university to get trained. I have years of experience and I’m always up to date with the subject I teach. I charged £25 per hour when I did tutoring.
Last year I paid £140 for highlights, cut and blow dry. No Olaplex or fancy treatment. It took the hairdresser 2 hours and half all in all. We have to admit that the prices of hairdressing in this country are extortionate.

Izzycat28 · 15/08/2022 16:18

@UniCred1 you cannot compare your tutoring cost as the overheads are completely different.
Do you feel this way about all trades?

10HailMarys · 15/08/2022 16:31

I pay £50 for a cut and blow-dry. If I went to a junior stylist at the same salon it would be £32 I think. That's in Manchester.

However, that obviously includes a wash and blow-dry and some haircuts require more work than others, so that might not be comparable to your situation.

I've never seen the stylists do a one-length, ends only dry cut like that where I go - I've only ever seen the apprentice do one as part of her training. I don't know how much they charge for that, but looking at what they charge for things like all-over clipper cuts, my guess is that it's in the £15 ballpark?

gogohmm · 15/08/2022 16:49

I paid £25 for wash, cut and blow dry but she's just increased to £28. Salon is in her home across the road from mine so very convenient

Lulu1919 · 15/08/2022 18:05

I've decided to stop going
Last time I went I had a dry trim
Was in there under 20 mins and they charged me just under £43
My daughter rang to check they'd charged me correctly ..but yes they had !

UniCred1 · 15/08/2022 21:39

@Izzycat28 Well! How much would the tube of hair colour, bleach, foil, 2 tbsp of shampoo, 4 minutes spent of water washing the hair, 10 minutes of electricity using hair dryer would cost? I’m sure it’ll be less than £10. As I said there was no Olaplex or any additional treatments. £130 just for her labour is too much for 2h30 mins of which at least 30 mins I’m just sat there waiting for the product to work.
And yes, there are a lot of trades that are underpaid and others that are overpaid, like hairdressing. BTW I live next to a famous salon in my town and the owner is always busy and works with his sister only, no other workers to be seen. They charge ridiculous prices for their services and I never understood why! What’s noticeable however are the massive Range Rovers that each of them is driving with special number plates of their salon’s name.

@Metabigot aw thank you for asking! Here are my last couple :) first one is at about a month's fade, washing every 2-3 days, second one is brand new and shiny before I left the salon. Happy hair!

Wow that looks amazing!

My friend is a hairdresser and she cuts my hair for nothing! During lockdown when she couldn't I did it myself- having curly hair covers a multitude of sins. The first time I did the unicorn cut I cut off 1 1/2 inches, asked dh if it looked any different and he didn't even realise I'd cut it.

Less than £10 for all that? Mother of god I'm glad you're not teaching my kids.
