Hairdressers prices

I've stopped going to my hairdresser as she charges me £22 to have snippets off my ends and wants £140 for highlights.
Does anyone else think this is expensive.

It takes the same amount of time to cut someone’s hair whether you are taking a mm or 2 inches off. £22 is cheap for a cut. Hairdressers charging £10 for a cut are seriously under valuing their time and skills. I’d be embarrassed to pay someone so little for a hair cut, particularly if they were travelling to my home to do it.

FrangipaniBlue · 14/08/2022 20:58

I think £22 for a trim is reasonable.

I have a very short pixie type haircut that needs trimmed every 4 weeks, my last hairdresser used to charge me £30 so I started going to a barber, he only charges £13 😂

username124952 · 14/08/2022 20:58

Is the £22 for a wash, cut and blow or just a dry cut? For a wash and cut it seems quite reasonable.
I personally would not pay £140 for highlights. I pay £70 (North West)

Imagenieinabottle · 14/08/2022 20:58

Just out of curiosity @Derrymare what would you be happy to pay?

MrsSales · 14/08/2022 21:02

I pay £130 for cut and finish whole head highlights colour and treatment every 8 weeks

it’s not an ‘upmarket’ hairdresser either so interested to see what others pay!

hilariousnamehere · 14/08/2022 21:06

I'm always fascinated by these threads, having had some awful experiences with hairdressers in the past.

My amazing hairdresser now owns her own salon, and charges £60 for cut & finish through to £330 for my ridiculous but glorious waist length rainbow hair - she is worth every damn penny.

Someone undercharging is someone who doesn't value what they do enough, in my book. I don't think I'd let anyone charging £10 near my hair, I'd rather risk cutting it myself - and I am not super flush, just have had too many bad experiences.

solvendie · 14/08/2022 21:06

I need to find a new hairdresser. I pay about £200 for cut, full head highlights and treatment. Fortunately my hair is long so I try to make this just 2 or 3 times a year

Maritimemum · 14/08/2022 21:06

I pay £37 for a wash, cut (ends trimmed) and blow dry so £22 sounds good to me!

AuntieMarys · 14/08/2022 21:08

Just paid £75 for roots, no cut.

Pinkypie86 · 14/08/2022 21:10

East Midlands - £163

Half head colour / freelights and low lights. Cut and blow dry with salon director.

Dependent on skill, products, time and area.

EasterIssland · 14/08/2022 21:10

I paid yesteday£200 for 3h for getting my hair coloured (so bleach + colour).

thibk she charged £40 for cut

hilariousnamehere · 14/08/2022 21:10

Don't forget if they're vat registered (and I'd imagine most salons are) then only 80% of what you pay goes to them, and out of that 80% as a pp said comes rent, rates, equipment, power, card processing fees, all the usual business overheads, then tax, then their hourly rate - so it's not that high - and good ones are highly skilled and keep learning over time too.

I'm not in London, either - but I think a really brilliant hairdresser is worth their weight in gold.

MercuryOnTheRise · 14/08/2022 21:11

I'm near London. My hairdresser does three sets of highlights in different tones to blend in the grey. Varies from apt to apt. Every 6 weeks averages £150.

She is a fantastic colourist now working from home. I'd pay £300 min in the West end. Worth every penny. Think a cut and blow dry is £55-£60. Oh and I tip £15. ducks

I'd love to see the rainbow 🌈 hair...

Prinnny · 14/08/2022 21:22

£130 cut and colour, toner and olaplex. Big chain hairdressers.

Gallant282 · 14/08/2022 21:26

I've stopped going too. Luckily my hair is all one length and very straight so I've bought a pair of hairdressing scissors and DH just lops a few inches off twice a year. I've never enjoyed going to the hairdressers anyway-the chit chat, not knowing where to look, the uncomfortable basins, the bit at the end when they show you the back of your head, the not knowing whether to tip or not. Would happily never go back!

Beepbeepenergy · 14/08/2022 21:27

£12 for a trim - Yorkshire and she’s mobile so comes to house too

AStar98 · 14/08/2022 21:29

I pay £45 for cut and blow dry and for the calibre of salon, I think it's rather pricey.
I had some highlights done earlier in the year and was charged £110 which was a little eye watering, I thought most salons' colouring charges included cut & blow dry but this was added on top!
I've only been going to the salon for a year but it took me a year to find a decent stylist after moving so I'm reluctant to try elsewhere. Saying that the shampoo skills (by a trainee) are somewhat lackluster and my hair actually felt worse than when I went in on one occasion.

butterflyflutterby123 · 14/08/2022 21:40

The cheap reasonable prices on hear blow me away. Not jealous AT ALL

London - 130 for highlights, 40 for cut and wash no blow-dry. Most quotes for highlights were 200 or above.

KangarooKenny · 14/08/2022 21:44

I pay under £40 for a cut and blow with 10% tip.

SundayTeatime · 14/08/2022 21:47

£55 is the cheapest for a wash, trim and blow dry near me. That’s with the most junior stylist.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/08/2022 21:50

22 is pretty normal for a cut.. and if you have highlights you are occupying the chair for an hour and a half, 2 hours? So you have to pay for that chair time and she has to buy the stuff.

You might get highlights a bit cheaper someone else if you look around.

Lapland123 · 14/08/2022 21:53

I think it sounds standard where I am- but I have no idea how anyone affords this regularly!

CoopsMalloops · 14/08/2022 21:56

£145 highlights, root colour, toner, olaplex cut and blow dry/products. Cup of tea and biscuit.

by a qualified stylist who knows what she’s doing. You get what you pay for.
South Birmingham area.

MooPooBoo · 14/08/2022 22:00

NW £65 for a full head of highlights, cut and blow dry. Other salons around here can easily charge over double though. This is a small village salon, bit of a hidden gem. I go every 4 weeks without fail but would probably go down the home box dye and block colour route if it was much more.
