AIBU to think men shouldn’t be trying to push open doors in female toilets?

Was a bit stunned to encounter this twice on holiday. Poolside toilet block split into male and female. Four toilets in female section , only 2 could be properly locked, but always busy so lots of women/ girls used unlockable ones.

Twice, while I was washing my hands, different men came in to the female toilets with their daughters (around 5/6 yo) and started pushing at the toilet doors to see which ones were occupied (no visible sign to indicate) . Neither spoke English, so I ended saying quite loudly / firmly “no, there’s someone in there!” The women/ girls having the doors pushed also shouted out. Eventually they took their children to the men’s.

AIBU to think that men shouldn’t be pushing women’s toilet cubicle doors open on the pretext of taking their daughters to the loo? It wasn’t just grown women there, it was teenage and younger girls. Why should small girls on the loo face grown men barging in on them ?

Serious question though - what do you think is happening in the men’s that makes it completely safe for little boys but unsafe for little girls who have their dads with them?

Absolutely nothing inappropriate about a man taking his daughter/female child in his care into the men's toilets.

Asides from the fact he will be there with her to escort her past the urinals if that is a concern, she won't be rushed out of the toilet because the man suddenly feels uncomfortable or is asked to leave.

I also don't see a problem at all with a child seeing the human body do what it naturally does. A man using a urinal isn't doing it to try and expose himself to a child sexually, they are just doing what their body needs to do in a place designed for that need. If the child does catch a glimpse of a penis then so what? It's a body part and isn't being exposed threateningly.

This is exactly why we need unisex toilets. People moan about men bringing their daughters in, nobody wants their daughters in the gents with urinals... fully self contained unisex is perfect for poolside. Obviously bigger facilities eg at shopping malls can have mens, womens, unisex, disabled and family

Some of us don’t mind one but if our DDs go with their dad to the gents. It’s REALLY odd to think they’re unsafe when you have boys going in with and without their dads all the time.

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea Yes, exactly. Litle children don't associate any sexual connotations to this kind of situation anyway.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 15/08/2022 18:25

Also, again, they have a very, very slim chance of seeing a penis unless they actually make the effort to. They will see men’s backs

Bretonbear · 15/08/2022 18:33

A man should not be in a woman's toilet area and a man should definitely not be pushing doors open.

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet Many people seem to have a hard time differentiating between adults of the opposite sex and small children in these types of threads. Not sure why that's the case.

They should be taking their daughters into the mens, the same they would with their sons.

Dont agree that men who do this ‘aren’t malicious’. They don’t see women’s toilets as something that’s not for them - they barge their way in because they can with no consideration of the women in there and how they feel about their presence.

Yep! We should never forget - all spaces belong to men unless they're locked out.
They could have knocked instead of pushing the doors. But they chose not to.

Gymrabbit · 15/08/2022 22:18

‘Lucky my OH wouldn’t give a shit what someone thinks.’

translation : my OH thinks he can do what he wants and if he wants to go into women’s toilets he couldn’t give a shit if women don’t like it/are traumatised by his presence/are from a religion where sharing toilets with a male would be frowned upon.
what a prince eh?

Gymrabbit · 15/08/2022 22:20

Fortunately the vast majority of dads aren’t entitled arseholes and wouldn’t dream of wandering into the womens toilets.

but OP I do think you could have been a bit more vocal to the blokes who were pushing the doors. Since there are some idiots who think it’s perfectly fine for blokes to wander in if they fancy they need to be shown clearly that many women disapprove.

Bewilderedandhurt · 30/04/2023 22:46

Not really the mens fault, how would they know there are no locks on the cubicles without being inside.
The fault lies with the management of the resort not providing serviceable facilities with locking doors for privacy.
You are targeting the wrong people, (men).
