To think Jo Malone is overrated

Just that really.. everyone is crazy about the perfumes and home scents and I don't get the hype. The packaging is beautiful but the smell is mediocre imo... there is definitely nicer out there and for a lot less ££

Or "No Malone"! as i call it!

Very weak scents

All rather style over substance imo

SummerNightsDriftingAway · 14/08/2022 14:45

Since they've been taken over the scents last approximately 2 minutes. I do love the scents though...

ChicagoBears · 14/08/2022 14:48

I agree, I received a few items from Jo Malone we a gift and whilst the packaging is truly beautiful, I don’t feel that the fragrances last (perfumes or candles).

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/08/2022 14:49

I buy the PP dupes as they last mich longer and the candle dupes from Aldi.

Sally99 · 14/08/2022 14:57

I wear and love the scents but they need reapplying

SwimmingOnEggshells · 14/08/2022 15:00

They're eau de cologne which is half the strength of eau de toilette, so it makes sense that they fade so quickly.

Someone from the perfume thread will know the exact percentages.

Overitallnow · 14/08/2022 15:23

The Jo Malone range at Zara is good!

Chazx · 14/08/2022 15:34

jo malone was bought by estee lauder in 1999 or early 2000s - so i've only ever known it as estee lauder.

The candles and products are "statement" aspirational and identifiable lifestyle items. I guess that's why they sell - they also smell good for a petrochemical cheap-to-manufactured item! I buy Neom candles or ask for them for birthdays, much nicer personally.

I only ever buy Myrrh and Tonka Intense (the only one i find lasts) but only once a year. I went through a phase buying something new every month (a few years ago) and now that i've got less disposable income, buy less but don't feel the colognes are worth it as they evaporate after a hour or two!

Each to their own, honestly if people like it, they should buy it

I don't have experience of the JM home fragrances, but for the personal fragrances: I do find most of them are weak in terms of longevity, even for cologne. I suggest testing/sampling and giving anything a full trial (wear it for a day) before buying a bottle, because they are relatively expensive.

A big part of JM's appeal is that there's a large variety (lots are limited edition) and that many of the scents are (or were - there's a lot going on in smaller houses right now) kind of adventurous and unusual, and highlight English botanicals. I'll also say that longevity varies: one of my favourites from the line is Pomegranate Noir, and it IS tenacious! I also found Orange Bitter (kind of like a greenish herbal Campari) very long lasting, but I think that was a limited edition.

Jo Malone also has a line called "Jo Loves", which gives her a bit more control now that Jo Malone itself has been sold to a huge multinational. Not sure if this info is current, but for a while Jo Loves shops in the UK were giving out 2 generous (about 2 ml spray) carded samples for anyone who stopped in and asked. (My favourite is White Rose & Lemon Leaves). Space NK also carry the line and will give samples.

... there is definitely nicer out there and for a lot less ££... If you have time, I'd love to hear about other options you (including anyone reading) recommend! Here's a sampling of mine:

April Aromatics. Germany-based. All kinds of botanicals from around the world, but quite a lot European. Expensive, though!!
Cloon Keen. Irish perfumes and candles from Galway, with a really wide international distribution network. My favourite of theirs is Lunasagh: another herby fresh white floral citrus.
Diptyque. I used to love them like crazy; distilled scent of the Greek/Balkan countryside. Their prices have escalated and they've discontinued their most "natural" scents, but still worth a look.
Goldfield & Banks. Australia-based so you won't necessarily find specific English floral scents, but worth a sniff if you just like nice long-lasting natural scents.
Kingdom Scotland. Portal is my favourite. They only have four scents, but I'm waiting to see what they come out with next. They're carried by but otherwise you can order a sample pack or travel set online.

billy1966 · 14/08/2022 16:52

Completely agree.

Have received 3 bottles of scent which I happily past on to friends that love them.

Much prefer Neom candles and room scent.

Spanielsarepainless · 14/08/2022 16:58

You are right. I tried a sample of the lime, basil and mandarin cologne. The smell was just weird, not at all fresh or herbal. The only plus was that it didn't last beyond five minutes. I binned the sample. Lovely packaging but I won't be buying it again.

bluberries · 14/08/2022 17:00

Hate it

LimeTwists · 14/08/2022 17:44

The room sprays are well worth the money - one spritz smells nice for hours and my bottle lasts about a year of daily use.

The colognes are, by nature, weaker than edt and have so little staying power that they disappear on me within an hour or two. I wouldn’t repurchase one.

I do love the shower gels and body creams but the price point is borderline insane. The price has just gone up to £60.00 a pot, meaning it’s £34.29 per 100ml and even more if you buy the smaller pot.

I think their candles (and Diptyque’s) are hugely overpriced for paraffin wax. I’ve been stupid enough to buy four different Diptyque candles and none impressed me.

I do like several of the scents but I think they’ve reached the point where it’s no longer a luxury brand I’d treat myself to, simply because they’ve increased prices to a point where I no longer want to pay that.

Imaginary · 14/08/2022 17:48

I quite like some of them.

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 14/08/2022 17:59

I used to love her perfumes esp woodsage and sea salt but hasn't bought anymore since before lockdown. Had some birthday money and thought I'd get another bottle. The smallest size had gone up £12 and I thought I'd think about it and had a quick spray whilst I walked around the shops. Couldn't smell it 10 mins later. Do disappointed:(

Bluevelvetsofa · 14/08/2022 18:05

Jo Loves is much better and it’s proper Jo Malone.

Motnight · 14/08/2022 18:08

Overitallnow · 14/08/2022 15:23

The Jo Malone range at Zara is good!

Agree! Love these.

TastesLikeStrawberries · 14/08/2022 20:47

Glad I'm not the only one! I feel like every bride I've known in the last year have worn it and I just can't like the perfumes!

What ones from Zara are nice? Smile

OP posts:
Popsicle33 · 14/08/2022 20:49

The only good ones are the charity candles and vine tomato. They're powerful and beautiful. All the others are shit.

Clymene · 14/08/2022 20:59

Jo Loves is entirely separate from Jo Malone. She sold her name to Estes Lauder and has no control over anything they produce under her name

She owns Jo Loves and set it up afterwards.

NavyNailVarnish · 14/08/2022 21:02

I love the bath oils at Jo Malone, but the scents are pointless. They last about 20mins. I prefer Jo Loves candles, and love their creams etc but don’t find their scents last long either.

MrsKeats · 14/08/2022 21:04

Agreed. I love Dipytique.

Bitterbean · 14/08/2022 21:06

The candle I have has black smoke coming off it, and left a black smudgy line up my wall.

Haffiana · 14/08/2022 21:07

I have always considered that Jo Malone are perfumes for people who are afraid of perfume.

NellesVilla · 14/08/2022 21:18

Going against the grain here as I am/was a fan!

I love all Jo Malone scents- I’m a sucker for the lovely packaging as it’s minimalist and very much my style- but unfortunately I agree that they really are overpriced and have no longevity.
Can’t justify £54 for a tiny bottle anymore.
