To think Jo Malone is overrated

Just that really.. everyone is crazy about the perfumes and home scents and I don't get the hype. The packaging is beautiful but the smell is mediocre imo... there is definitely nicer out there and for a lot less ££

The Red Roses lasts, and so does the Orange Blossom - sadly the latter gives me a stonking migraine.

The room sprays are well worth the money - one spritz smells nice for hours and my bottle lasts about a year of daily use.

The colognes are, by nature, weaker than edt and have so little staying power that they disappear on me within an hour or two. I wouldn’t repurchase one.

I do love the shower gels and body creams but the price point is borderline insane. The price has just gone up to £60.00 a pot, meaning it’s £34.29 per 100ml and even more if you buy the smaller pot.

I think their candles (and Diptyque’s) are hugely overpriced for paraffin wax. I’ve been stupid enough to buy four different Diptyque candles and none impressed me.

I do like several of the scents but I think they’ve reached the point where it’s no longer a luxury brand I’d treat myself to, simply because they’ve increased prices to a point where I no longer want to pay that.

Don’t get swept up in the hype regarding soy v paraffin. It’s a load of rubbish made up by the soy industry. I actually wouldn’t buy Soy candles due to the devastating impact on the environment. Both waxes aren’t ideal but I find alternative waxes are yet to be as superior with scent throw as paraffin. Whatever candle producers say re soy candles being an eco natural product are talking out of their arses. Plenty of info out there on how they make soy wax and one thing it isn’t is natural!

Jo Malone and I have totally different scent palates (is there such a thing?!) and I've never found one I like in either the JM or Jo Loves ranges. The JM packaging is beautiful though.

DSGR · 14/08/2022 21:26

Each to their own but I love it and find the shower oils fill my bathroom with a beautiful long-lasting fragrance afterwards. The perfumes stay on me.. people comment on them so they must do?

CinnamonJellyBeans · 14/08/2022 21:30

The sales assistants would rather give you a kidney than a free sample.

StoneofDestiny · 14/08/2022 21:31

Was bought a Jo Malone candle and diffuser once and they were very long lasting and smelled gorgeous. I'd never spend that much money myself on them though.

Scoobydoobydo · 14/08/2022 21:32

A girl at work wears the roses perfume. ( red rose?) and I swear to God I thought it was air freshener
She was delighted to have got it duty free for £90 🙄

Gingernaut · 14/08/2022 21:35

Everything is overrated.

Nothing lives up to any hype.

No luxury item is worth the price we are asked to pay for it

Badger1970 · 14/08/2022 21:42

I've tried the Peony/Blush Suede, Orange Blossom and English Oak/Redcurrant. All 3 induced a migraine. There must be a chemical in there that my nose really doesn't enjoy. Never had it with any other perfume either.

Have a look at Valentte.
Fantastic value and beautiful long lasting home fragrances.

TokyoTen · 14/08/2022 21:48

I dont know if they are ove rated but definitely over priced!

MissGlitterSparkles · 14/08/2022 21:50

Why anyone would spend hundreds of pounds on a Jo Malone candle is utterly beyond me. It’s literally burning money. For me, Jo Malone screams ‘keeping up with the Jones’ - having overpriced handwash, hand lotion and candles in your house to look good. I’ll stick with cheaper options!

Thestoppedfan · 14/08/2022 21:56

I like the candles, I lit one in the hallway today for 10 minutes before guests came round and the whole house smelt lovely from it. I’d never buy one myself but I do love getting them as gifts.

JeanMarie · 14/08/2022 22:03

I wear Jo Malone Pomegrànite Noir and the Lime and Basil one. I love the scent but it definitely isn't long lasting. Most perfumes give me headaches so I tend to stick with these as I know I can wear them. There is a company called Jenny Glow who do dupes of Jo Malone so when funds are low I'll get these and tbh they smell just as good at a fraction of the price.

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 14/08/2022 22:14

Paid £100 quid for Seasalt - absolute shit - Hardly any smell to begin with, but what there is smells cheap as shit. I don't know how they get away with it.

EmilySpinach · 14/08/2022 22:19

I sort of have to admire the audacious bit
of marketing that the Jo Malone brand manages to pull off. They charge almost as much for their eau de cologne, ml for ml, as Chanel do for their eau de parfum - ie 2-4% fragrance concentration compared to 15-20%.

And THEN they have the further audacity to encourage their loyal customers to LAYER two fragrances to compensate for their weedy blends and poor longevity. Absolutely incredible.

On candles, I highly recommend Valentte - British made, beautiful fragrances, soy wax instead of mineral / paraffin.

Germolenequeen · 14/08/2022 22:21

I like some of the "rip off" Jenny Glow ones 🤭

tobee · 14/08/2022 23:40

I used to like French Lime Blossom, very clean smelling. But they stopped doing it.

La Bougie are also gorgeous.
Received two as a gift from a visitor.
Sage and bitter orange.
Lime and Samphire room defusers.

Both were stunning and long lasting.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 15/08/2022 12:01

Oh thank goodness someone else said it.

Beautiful scents/fragrances, terrible longevity. If I need to remortgage my house or sell an organ to pay for a small bottle, I expect the smell to last a good portion of the day on my skin!

I used to work for Estee Lauder (parent company of JM) back in the day so I used to get them heavily discounted. I wouldn't pay full price for a bottle or a candle now!
