His latest gig has been cancelled after he told racist jokes and got his dick out. Why are other comedians defending his right to do this? This behaviour is not ok, AIBU to think this is indecent and disgusting behaviour and the venue were correct in cancelling him.

What disturbs me is that context doesn’t seem to matter. This comes from the USA influence.

People have quoted how he used the racial slur and he’s clearly not calling Rishi that. He’s saying that’s how the tories see him. Given the recent poll showing some tory members are voting for Liz because she’s “white and English”, maybe it could be argued he has a point?

Cleebope2 · 14/08/2022 22:12

Of course he is using offensive humour to shine a light on hypocrisy. It is a genre of humour that many of us enjoy, including me. I had never heard of this comedian before but now I know all about him.His next tour will sell out in minutes. No greater compliment than getting cancelled these days.

Scianel · 14/08/2022 22:17

I saw him years ago and that's exactly correct. But we're in the Age of the New Puritanism now, and no nuance is allowed.

Frankie Boyle, by contrast, made some genuinely crass homophobic jokes when I went to see him. But he writes for the Guardian so he's safe I guess.

Alas, the hypocrites didn’t like the light being shone.

No it is banned on here.
Automatically
Generally
Prohibited.

Ah! Great. Personally I don't see why, but if that's the MN law...

Exposing your penis without warning is NEVER acceptable.

Calling people racial slurs is never acceptable.

If a trans comedian or a drag queen had exposed their penis during a show MN would be up in arms calling for them to be cancelled. I can't believe the blatant rank hypocrisy of defending indecent exposure just because he's anti-trans. I swear Mumsnet would cheer on Pol Pot if he was anti-trans.

Being anti-trans does not make you a friend to GC women. Being anti-trans does not make you a good person.

The mentality on this forum that anyone who's anti-trans must be championed and applauded no matter what terrible things they do (eg rapists, or far right wing politicians who want to ban reproductive rights, because fuck women and fuck women's rights, all that matters is being anti-trans) is honesty terrifying.

I wonder who is pushing this agenda that gender critical women should tolerate and embrace sexual abuse/rape and support racism and other far right wing politics. Very very sinister.

It wasn't without warning, it's been said that it was on advertising or promo material, plus if you booked to see him then presumably you know who he is and what happens in his shows.

WRT the last bit you have written, I may have missed something salient, but I have never seen anyone on here supporting a rapist or far right politician or racism, just because it's "anti-trans". Also most GC people that I know, follow online, or recognise on here aren't "anti-trans" as you call it, but just are pro women and children, and don't agree with young people being given damaging drugs to fulfil an agenda promoted by the likes of Stonewall, Mermaids et al.

Like I said though, I may have missed something so if you have evidence of people supporting rapists just cause they're anti-trans, please share as I find that abhorrent and would like to know to steer clear of those people.

As is entirely your prerogative.
But presumably people just don't book utterly random shows on a whim.
People who book Jerry Sadowitz know (with a 30 second Google search) they will see his penis at some point, hear vulgar language, hear extremely offensive material, be shocked and probably disgusted.
And if they enjoy that, that's THEIR prerogative.

I agree this smacks of one thing only.

No other utterance can get you cancelled so swiftly.

I agree.

Equally I have no problem with individuals deciding it was not for them and walking out. The issue I have is the censorship by the Pleasance.

The later Pleasance statement said some audience members felt “unsafe”. I mean come the fuck on, get a grip.

Bouledeneige · 14/08/2022 23:12

I think a relevant factor is that Jerry Sadowitz has been performing this kind of material for at least 30 - 35 years. None of his material is reportable and it never has been. The show carries heavy health warnings and audiences are expected to come prepared or not at all. That's why other comedians defend him because it's impossible to draw a line between what's funny and not funny, what's offensive or not. And no comedian believes in censorship.

I don't find him funny and wouldn't go.

Scianel · 14/08/2022 23:18

I don't find him funny and wouldn't go

Which is the normal, grown-up response.

AlwaysCommenting · 14/08/2022 23:23

Certain comedy topics are taboo....childhood cancer or similar touchy subjects....it is only "funny" if you haven't been personally affected ....

Personally I wouldn't find it funny, but Ricky Gervais has joked about child death, child abduction, the current ideology, religion, fat people, gay people, and probably anything you would care to imagine.
He's not being kicked out of any venues.

Probably TRAs know he's too big to cancel, and that he doesn't give a crap.

Endofdaysarehere · 14/08/2022 23:57

The Pleasance must be most confused. Imagine booking Jerry Sadowitz and then being annoyed that Jerry Sadowitz turned up.

SomethingOnce · 15/08/2022 00:05

‘Unsafe’ - that word is to shut down anything and everything these days. A comedian made you feel unsafe, well piss off then.

What fucks me off about this ‘unsafe’ shit, in this kind of context, is how it trivialises the idea of safety, in the sense of freedom from real risk of actual serious harm, or worse. It’s manipulative and I don’t understand why it’s indulged.

What have TRAs got to do with it?

MaChienEstUnDick · 15/08/2022 00:27

The thing is, for those that don't know the Fringe, people walk out All The Time. Usually because you've suddenly realised you're late for another show, or you're tired, or hungry, or bored, or aff it, or you don't agree or like what's being presented to you. FFS I did a whole class on it in drama school. Walk outs don't equal 'unsafe', whatever the fuck that means.

This is a dark day, on a lot of levels.

TRAs are very upset with Gervais for the jokes about Caitlin Jenner, and trans ideology in general (HER penis etc).

If you don't know that I'm surprised. There were multiple videos on YouTube and Twitter posts about it when the new special was released.

It's also being said on quite a few forums that Sadowitz made comments about trans ideology.

The venue is clearly caving to the current culture where anything said against a sacred caste of people is seen as "literal violence".

noblegiraffe · 15/08/2022 00:52

The Pleasance didn't mention transphobia at all in their statement. Racism, homophobia and misogyny.

If they were caving to complaints made about transphobia in particular, why wasn't it on the list?

Presumably it was included in "among other things" in their statement.

But that on some level, someone has realised that calling out a known to be offensive comedian, who has offended them looks kinda stupid? 🤷‍♀️ So it could have been decided not to specify who was specifically offended by what.

The second statement is really confusing, like yeah we knew he was offensive but suddenly this is a problem. Down with that sort of thing.

That made me laugh. It captures the ridiculousness of the venue's statement. 😄

"Anthony Alderson, director of the Pleasance, suggested other Fringe venues should refuse to stage Sadowitz shows insisting “this type of material has no place on the festival”."

The Daily Mail article included all the tweets. I saw it this morning and had all that info.

I used to watch his show on Channel 5

I'm still unaware of what Sadowitz actually said, but I can't imagine anything that could be more offensive - and dangerous to society - than the highly corrosive Daily Mail!

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/08/2022 06:50

The venue said "We believe in free speech and we don't censor comedy. This performance doe not align with out values and we have cancelled his second show"

Pick a lane. Either admit you don't believe in free speech, or allow free speech.

FWIW I've seen a lot more penises over the years at rock concerts than comedy shows (Iggy Pop was memorable). If I was worried, I'd go to see something more staid.

I don't want to see JS. So you know what, I don't. Because he's not new, is he? It isn't a surprise. And I'd rather like verbatim quotes rather than veiled accusations so I can make my own mind up. Critical thinking, it used to be all the rage.
