Comedians defending Jerry Sadowitz

His latest gig has been cancelled after he told racist jokes and got his dick out. Why are other comedians defending his right to do this? This behaviour is not ok, AIBU to think this is indecent and disgusting behaviour and the venue were correct in cancelling him.

Glad he’s been axed. Sounds like a vile individual.

He is what he is. He doesn't pretend to be puppies and sweeties and then launch into some tirade. He's been extremely offensive for decades.

WolverineBluey · 14/08/2022 13:37

As I said, they're trying to get lots of comedians cancelled at The Fringe. The Pleasance gave in first. The other venues will be watching carefully.

Interesting (if not depressing). Any ideas who else is being targeted, and why?

ResisterRex · 14/08/2022 13:38

No, we know who pretends to be friendly with puppies.

I realise a video is unlikely but like I said, there's not even an audio. Or even an outline of what was said. The longer it goes on with nothing at all, the more it looks like someone went with an agenda and the venue caved.

Saucery · 14/08/2022 13:26

So does Piers Morgan but I don’t want him eradicated off the face of the entertainment earth.
Free speech and freedom to avoid that speech, for me.

I do.

At last they are grappling with creatures like him. About time. 🤮

AlexandriasWindmill · 14/08/2022 13:42

I think the venues may have to reconsider their Fringe recruitment policies next year too. Part of the censorship push this year is being framed as creating 'unsafe spaces' for staff.

You are free to go and see who you wish, enjoy what kind of comedy you wish and decide for yourself what you think is funny or entertainment.

What you cannot do is make that decision for everyone else.

It sounds as if you just want to live in a world where everyone has the same opinions, and silence anyone who doesn't.

JS can say what the hell he wants.
Also, it doesn't make him a "creature".

Why do YOU get to be offensive?

ChateauMargaux · 14/08/2022 13:52

oviraptor21 · 13/08/2022 20:54

From reading some of the tweets relating to this I think there may be an additional transphobic element to this which hasn't been reported.

So... racism and misogyny are OK but offending transpeople is not??

JemimaPuddlegoose · 14/08/2022 13:57

Exposing your penis without warning is NEVER acceptable.

Calling people racial slurs is never acceptable.

If a trans comedian or a drag queen had exposed their penis during a show MN would be up in arms calling for them to be cancelled. I can't believe the blatant rank hypocrisy of defending indecent exposure just because he's anti-trans. I swear Mumsnet would cheer on Pol Pot if he was anti-trans.

Being anti-trans does not make you a friend to GC women. Being anti-trans does not make you a good person.

The mentality on this forum that anyone who's anti-trans must be championed and applauded no matter what terrible things they do (eg rapists, or far right wing politicians who want to ban reproductive rights, because fuck women and fuck women's rights, all that matters is being anti-trans) is honesty terrifying.

I wonder who is pushing this agenda that gender critical women should tolerate and embrace sexual abuse/rape and support racism and other far right wing politics. Very very sinister.

People aren’t paying good money for the privilege of listening to me. It’s quite simple.

You see offence where there is none, ironically.

BoredofthisCrap7 · 14/08/2022 14:03

It's not indecent exposure.

It's the same as going to see a strip show, the Chippendales, or to a show like the one in Edinburgh called "Puppetry of the Penis".

It's EXPECETED.
People PAID to see him, they know it's part of JS's act and has been for decades.
It's a KNOWN element of the show.

It is not the same remotely as someone without warning in an unexpected situation exposing themselves.

I’ve scoured Twitter. Impossible to find out for certain what caused the cancellation which makes me think it’s probably trans related. Or that 3-letter thing which must not be named. On the day after Rushdie is stabbed we STILL can’t have freedom of speech.

Sorry if I'm being thick but can you give me a hint as to the 3 letter thing which must not be named?

I hate this whole complaint/cancel culture. Have these moaning assholes never heard the children's rhyme "Stick and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" FFS

No it is banned on here.

Nope

He has an outrageous stage persona which some would consider vile. The comparison made earlier with Al Murray and his pub landlord persona works well.

I've read a few comments on Twitter from people saying that they had bumped into him in Edinburgh and found him to be very friendly and a really nice person - unlike some other comedians with much nicer personas/reputations.

You'll need to add something like "meaning" to find it.

THIS

MaChienEstUnDick · 14/08/2022 14:27

Thing is, this is The Pleasance who have been booking comedians at the Fringe for something like over 30 years. Once you get past the first 10 pages of google (all about today's news) you'll find mentions of Sadowitz at the Pleasance back in the 80s. There is NOTHING about this show that will have been a surprise to the venue - so wtf was said?

Have just realised the 80s was actually over 40 years ago, god I feel old. Point still stands though.

SequinsandStilettos · 14/08/2022 14:30

jemima
I think transwoman Jordan Gray does just that - full body nudity. Jordan is getting 4/5* reviews and will probably pick up an award or two. Well deserved.
So I cannot believe Jerry Sadowitz is being cancelled for nudity. Lots of shows on the Fringe have that. It surely must be the p* word as that belongs to the Chubby Brown/Bernard Manning era...however, I thought Jerry always did hard-core invective, designed to offend all so am surprised they have cottoned on to part of his equal-opp-as-in-hates-every-fucker so late on.

antelopevalley · 14/08/2022 14:30

Racism on stage was more acceptable in the eighties.

I was going to say this, too. I can’t believe that none of the people doing the bookings at The Pleasance knew about what JS was going to do - it’s the same shtick he’s had going for thirty years. He even said exactly what he was going to do beforehand - warned he would be very offensive AND get his dick out. So the venue knew. Anyone booking should have known, if they had a clue who they were going to see.
