Deodorant for an 11 year old

mamma2013 · 13/08/2022 10:39

Hi,

My dd asked me to get her some deodorant yesterday for the first time. she owns lots of girly scents but I didn't think about her wanting actual deodorant for a while. I get the impression her friends use it and while I don't think she needs it yet who am I to tell her she can't use it

Anyway my question is what do I buy for an 11 year old? Is there something nice and natural that I should be buying?

If this is an odd question I apologise, I recently lost my dm very suddenly and I am feeling a little lost as I'd always ask her opinion on stuff or even as a sounding board. Totally off topic but incase I'm not making sense.

My DD is 9 and has been using it almost a year. She uses sure roll on. Hope this helps!

Possiblynotever · 13/08/2022 10:47

You are actually quite right in asking as some ingredients can cause harm. I do not buy anti perspiration or anything with aluminium. I quite like the eau dinamizante red one from Clarins but it is incredibly dear.

thinkivefuckedmykidup · 13/08/2022 10:48

I gave my DD a new Mitchum stick one I had in the cupboard which smells like baby powder and she loves it, it's the pink one. She had a roll on before but didn't like the stickiness. Maybe take her to the shop and let her choose which one she would like

Afterfire · 13/08/2022 10:48

Anything is fine. Anti perspirant is better than just normal deodorant. My ds aged 10 has been using mens sure spray for about a year!

Rubyupbeat · 13/08/2022 10:50

Definitely one with no parabens.
All five deodorants fit this bill.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/08/2022 10:51

At 11 she does need it - she is in puberty and will get sweaty at school.

A dove roll on or anything like that will be fine.

stormelf · 13/08/2022 11:03

I've been using wild deodorant since December and love it. There are some lovely scents and its natural. If my children were old enough for deodorant I would buy them the same (toddlers at the moment so long way off).

polkadotclip · 13/08/2022 11:08

So sorry about your DM. Flowers

I like this and will be buying for DD when she needs it. It is pricey but it lasts a long time. The refillable aspect appeals to eco conscious teens!

polkadotclip · 13/08/2022 11:09

sorry @stormelf i didn’t see yours! Agree with you.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 13/08/2022 11:09

Anything aluminium and paraben free is absolutely fine.

I was using deodorant from about age 9-10.

Gazelda · 13/08/2022 11:16

Another vote for Wild. I started my DD on this and have since switched to it myself.

I'm trying to encourage her to use natural based toiletries and cosmetics as much as possible.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/08/2022 11:26

My very fussy Dd took a mini wild with her on hols, she loved it. But as she buys her own stuff (she’s not a child) she gets Mitchum. Teens are stinky, they can’t help it. (Said Dd had one pit stinkier Than the other)Encourage soap not shower gel, deodorant roll on or stick.

ManateeFair · 13/08/2022 11:30

Any deodorant that’s safe for an adult to use is also safe for an 11-year-old to use - you don’t have to get her anything different or special. If you prefer products yourself that don’t have parabens or aluminium (I personally don’t have a problem with them but each to their own) then you can just get her any of those.

But if you use an ordinary deodorant yourself and are happy that it’s safe for you, it won’t be any less safe for your daughter.

Roll-on or cream might be easier than an aerosol - kids seem to go completely bonkers with aerosols and spray way too much, I don’t know why!

Lachimolala · 13/08/2022 11:34

My 11yo (boy) has been using Mitchum stick or spray (whatever we can get our hands on in the shop) but he prefers the stick. Been using it for about a year now, put it this way you can always tell when he doesn’t pop it on in a morning! Good lord lol 😆

Eunorition · 13/08/2022 11:37

Children can use adult products. You don't need a company to slap 'teeny bopper!' on the label at twice the price.

They're just items.

And yes of course she needs it. Girls can hit puberty at 9. My dd has used it since ten because yeah, she needed it. Keeping your head in the sand about the things she's going to need at this age or pretending she's "just doing it because her friends are" doesn't help anyone.

PippinStar · 13/08/2022 11:42

The Bionsen roll on is really good and gentle (I have very sensitive skin). It’s aluminium and paraben free. I get it in Boots or Tesco.

MsMiaWallace · 13/08/2022 11:45

Sanex roll on is great!

SpringCalling · 13/08/2022 13:50

I've just started my 11 year old DD on it. Got Dove spray on and roll on so she could see which she prefers. She likes the roll on.

mamma2013 · 13/08/2022 15:06

Excellent thanks for all the helpful comments.

Gonna ignore any negative ones cos I'm in a bad place with my mum at the moment and just can't deal with that. Just trying to do the right thing by my daughter and I don't think there is anything wrong with that 🙂

My 2 just used ordinary antiperspirant. They seem to like spray ones. I have no issues with them using ones with aluminium in.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/08/2022 15:11

I am so sorry you have lost your Mum.
i have teenage dds and they use Bionsen, or the Natural Deodorant Co ones that come in a glass jar.

ChristinaXYZ · 13/08/2022 15:15

I got my DD a Sam Farmer one which is formulated to have the lowest levels of the stuff that makes it work - just enough to get him or her through the day without being unpleasnant to know - so there is as little exposure as possible.

fifteenohfour · 13/08/2022 15:18

@Possiblynotever aluminium has been proven time and time again to be safe in deodorant, obviously it's your choice but don't not use certain deodorant cause you think aluminium is harmful because it's not!

dementedpixie · 13/08/2022 15:20

Aluminium is the stuff that stops me sweating so much and being smelly. It's not shown to be harmful. I have no issues with my kids using antiperspirant that contains it. The other products (deodorants) just cover up smells and don't stop the sweating.
