Entitlement of drivers

HarryPotterDucks · 12/08/2022 23:39

I’m not from the uk so I have learnt to drive elsewhere.

the entitlement of drivers is shocking.

park on double yellows is ok when hazards lights are on.

drive on the hard shoulder when there’s slow moving traffic

drive in lanes marked X on the motorway

speed

FaceTime and watching videos whilst driving.

kids not wearing seat belts

res light jumpers

tinted from windows

illegal number plates

etc

AIBU ti get so annoyed by this?

I rarely see many of those things happen.

I guess it's because you are a bad driver too and you think the way you drive is the norm, and therefore you don't notice traffic violations.

hedgehogger1 · 13/08/2022 13:02

The one that annoys me most is the people parking on Double yellow lines on a blind corner near me. Makes it completely impossible to pass safely. You just have to pull out and hope someone isn't coming the other way

Disneyblueeyes · 13/08/2022 13:02

You should drive around in Italy or India. You'd get a real wake up call there.

girlmom21 · 13/08/2022 13:03

How do you see kids without seatbelts unless they're standing up in front of you?

How do you see drivers on their phones and what they're actually doing?

I agree these things all happen sometimes but not on every journey or all the time.

maddening · 13/08/2022 13:04

Yanbu to be annoyed by twatish drivers

Yabu to suggest it is a UK only issue.

It's very easy to notice/glance what other drivers are doing. Mobile phone usage is rampant while driving. There was an AA study that showed that one-third of drivers in the UK use phones while driving. That's a high number of drivers, and careless driving behaviour.

girlmom21 · 13/08/2022 13:15

@Redwinemaestro yeah it's easy to see they're on their phone, not that they're watching YouTube

allboysherebutme · 13/08/2022 13:18

Fond of these are allowed obviously people just don't care not enough consequences. X

Taketheweather · 13/08/2022 13:29

Yabu I think. Yes, bad driving exists. But it's not unique to the UK. I've driven in places that are much much worse. I'm looking forward to the time when driverless cars come in. People make mistakes.

TooBored1 · 13/08/2022 13:36

It really is shocking isn't it? Especially if you dare to be a pedestrian or, even worse, a cyclist.

Cycling the children to school, we could do virtually ALL via park, off road cycle route etc. We only needed to be on the road for TWO minutes, a road that had 3 sets of traffic lights, a petrol station and numerous side roads. Plus a SCHOOL! Sadly we were abused multiple times a week - eg thing thrown at us, close/punishment passes, people saying we deserved to die.

The entitlement was huge, even from fellow school parents.

MintJulia · 13/08/2022 14:09

@Redwinemaestro My point was that some of these offences are so common, that if the OP gets upset with all of them, he's going to spend his entire driving time upset and stressed.

A less stressful approach would to be to snap the idiots who jump red lights, or reverse on motorways with a dash cam and do something about it by passing the evidence to the police. Most police officers won't act on someone parking too close to a junction because they are stretched to breaking and don't have time to do the paperwork. They'll act on the serious stuff though.

And as for me personally - a squeaky clean licence, 23 years no claims and I drive for my job, thanks. No need to be rude.

Pedallleur · 13/08/2022 14:10

I see all the antics everyday on my cycle commute into Mcr. 12 miles each way. If the police came with me they would have their quota of illegal motoring acts in a day. Not mentioned the weed smokers tho, that's not unusual now. The number plate thing and the mirrored front screen is all the rage. Always young men in a pimped up German car.

Redwinemaestro · 13/08/2022 14:13

girlmom21 · 13/08/2022 13:15

@Redwinemaestro yeah it's easy to see they're on their phone, not that they're watching YouTube

Check YouTube. There are many videos/dashcam footage of drivers watching movies while driving.

MintJulia · 13/08/2022 14:18

Interestingly, the four things that police will always act on are the fatal four;

  • no seatbelts

  • drink or drug driving

  • using a mobile phone when driving

  • excessive speed

They prioritise offences because they have to. My traffic officer friend says defective tyres/brakes & no insurance are close behind.

DixonD · 13/08/2022 14:18

The only ones I see are parking on double yellows (hate that!) or speeding. I live fairly rurally though so perhaps it’s all relative.

A squeaky clean driving licence doesn't make anyone a good driver these days as police are too stretched to catch each and every traffic violation. Rulebreakers get away with it because of inadequate policing and it encourages bad driving.

tailgating is common dont know why because they will be at fault if they go into the back of you.

People parking across driveways is common and over HBoxes. so selfish would they like it done to them?

Yes, the weed smokers. Not a single day goes by when I'm not behind these drivers. When it wafts in it just lingers in the car.

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/08/2022 16:09

Most tailgaters are trying to pressurise you to go faster because at the speed limit it's not fast enough for them. I ignore them and don't let it rattle me. If I feel they're driving behaviour is very threatening or bad I put my hazards on or indicate for them to back off.

I think they don’t realise they are doing it….

I haven’t noticed this, thankfully.

I see all of these too. Maybe not all of them everyday but OFTEN. I hadn’t noticed the number plate nonsense until DD pointed it out and now I see it all the time…

Shodan · 13/08/2022 16:25

I live in the SE, quite close to London. DP is a police officer, traffic division. It's quite literally his job to stop and ticket all drivers committing all the offences on the OP's list as well as some others, including drivers sitting on their done-up seatbelts.

And he's very busy, all day, every day.

Favourite excuses include:

I bought it like this.
It's the first time I've ever been stopped.
No-one ever told me.
I'm on my way to the hospital.
I was only going round the corner.

And the top one...

Why aren't you out catching real criminals.

TBH, before he was in traffic I possibly wouldn't have believed the depths of stupidity that drivers would plumb. But they do, and depressingly frequently.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 13/08/2022 16:31

I see all from your list in Kent and the West Midlands.
I've even seen a driver in front approach a roundabout, turn right and straight onto the right hand exit.

As to waiting at temporary lights ... don't get me started.
