Entitlement of drivers

HarryPotterDucks · 12/08/2022 23:39

I’m not from the uk so I have learnt to drive elsewhere.

the entitlement of drivers is shocking.

park on double yellows is ok when hazards lights are on.

drive on the hard shoulder when there’s slow moving traffic

drive in lanes marked X on the motorway

speed

FaceTime and watching videos whilst driving.

kids not wearing seat belts

res light jumpers

tinted from windows

illegal number plates

etc

AIBU ti get so annoyed by this?

Sorry I just reread your original post and I’m guessing Perth, Australia?

TulipCat · 13/08/2022 01:13

One thing I have seen a lot more of is people blatantly on their phone whilst driving who now take it one step further and stop at a junction for prolonged periods whilst they continue to text, thus blocking it for everyone behind with not a thought for how stupid and dangerous this is.

ElCaMum · 13/08/2022 01:19

YABU in that it’s not just a British thing. There are the equivalents all over the world.
I live in Canada and there are all those things bar the seat belts and illegal number plates.
But I can add cutting up and being totally unaware of other drivers which I also saw when back in the UK the other month.

Redwinemaestro · 13/08/2022 01:24

MintJulia · 13/08/2022 00:59

YABU There are plenty of people who break driving laws, and thousands of fixed penalty notices drop through letterboxes every day.

Can't you take a more pragmatic view. A wrongly spaced number plate isn't hurting you. Nor someone passing you at 78mph on a dry motorway. Nor is someone who parks in one of the 30 available disabled bays outside a supermarket at 7am on a Saturday morning.

Save your outrage for when someone endangers people's lives, or you are going to be exhausted. Buy a dash cam and if you see anything truly dangerous, the police will be delighted to receive it. 😊

Are you really stupid? You posted another ignorant comment on the other thread on bad parking. I would assume that people like you are the dangerous drivers on the road.

Lunar270 · 13/08/2022 01:24

Personally, seeing chavs use disabled bays winds me up.

Funnily enough I overheard a girl saying to her mate (on the way out of Tesco) that she'd been ticketed for parking in a disabled bay. She was annoyed because, "it was 9:00 innit".

What, like disabled people don't go out after 9:00? Stupid chav bloody deserved a ticket IMO. Karma.

park on double yellows is ok when hazards lights are on. -I’ll admit I I’ve done this while dropping someone off somewhere
**
**
drive on the hard shoulder when there’s slow moving traffic- I’ve never done this
**
**
drive in lanes marked X on the motorway- I’ve also never done this
**
**
speed- nope
**
**
FaceTime and watching videos whilst driving.- definitely never done this
**
**
kids not wearing seat belts- haven’t done this
**
**
res light jumpers-I was taught that there is a point where the lights are changing from amber to red that it would be more dangerous to stop than go through the light.
**
**
tinted from windows- my car has tinted back windows, it came like that
**
**
illegal number plates,no idea what these would be

ImWell · 13/08/2022 01:32

I’ve been driving for decades, only rarely see some of those, and have never seen others. I don’t believe you.

ImWell · 13/08/2022 01:33

HarryPotterDucks · 12/08/2022 23:53

Not too sure why you mentioned the type of cat you have…. Tinted front windows mean other road users including pedestrians can’t see you as well.

I won’t pass comment on your need for it. I will however say the tolerance in aus is much lower.

it’s absolutely dangerous for front windows to be treated. Have you seen them? Can’t see anything.

They did not mention a cat. Are you being deliberately obtuse to wind people up.

Poor effort, 2 / 10.

ah because I thought for a second I was doing something wrong by having tinted windows and it seems quite common to have the back tinted so wanted more info hence why I mentioned it. I've only seen one car have front screen tinted it would annoy me not being able to see out properly 😅

Just because you haven't seen it in your area doesn't mean the OP is lying.

As I said above, I drive regularly in 3 regions: fake or obscured number plates is rife in one; non-existent in the other 2.

Do you drive with your eyes shut?! OP pretty much listed every driver on the a406! 😃😃

I find it more 'chavvy' to drive a car with a loud exhaust, or with loud music playing in the late or early hours in a residential area

Hellohah · 13/08/2022 11:53

I got pulled by the police once for driving on the hard shoulder (I didn't and I know I didn't). Copper was adamant I had, he had a camera in his car, refused to let me see the footage. Said my points or whatever would come through the post. Never did. Because I clearly didn't drive on the hard shoulder. 30 minutes of intimidation I got from him on the side of the motorway. If I see people do it now, it does piss me off a lot though.

You're allowed to stop on double yellows for long enough for someone to get in or out. I think (though I'm not sure) that it's actually the having the hazards on while doing it that might be wrong. I was waiting for DW on a double-yellow in the City of London one evening, and a police car stopped to enquire if I was broken down. Seemed a little irritated when I explained that I was just stopping to pick up DW. (Who approached as we were talking, was supposed to be waiting at the kerb, though that's a separate issue.) Having said that, police officer did not actually tell me not to use hazards in that situation, I think it was later googling that made me think it was not OK.

Getoff · 13/08/2022 12:13

I've also stopped on double yellows outside a shop to drop off and pick up something that was being repaired. I believe if a traffic warden had seen me, they would be required to observe for a few minutes before issuing a ticket. If I emerged in that time, they wouldn't be able to ticket me, as it would be clear I was stopped to unload/load, which is allowed.

No you aren’t,

Double yellow, no stopping unless they only operate during certain times.

Hazard lights - when you are broken down and to show other road users that you are a hazard. Eg, smart motorway, engine failing, put on hazard lights to show you are in distress and for other road users to act accordingly.

They aren’t to be used when you feel like picking someone up in an area that have double yellow lines, because at that point they don’t apply to you.

Double yellow lines are there for a reason. They are for the safety of all road users.

This is what I have a problem with - not following road rules. Either people have a genuine mistake or they think it’s ok for the rules to be bent for them because their needs trump at that particular time.

It’s also shocking the amount of broken down cars on the motorway without using their hazard lights.

Do you also think there is a 10% rule with speeding?

"If I emerged in that time, they wouldn't be able to ticket me, as it would be clear I was stopped to unload/load, which is allowed."

Only if the item is so big you couldn't park further away and carry it.

Only heavy items or disabled blue badge passengers.

makes a mockery of yellow lines otherwise

Such anger, and most of these things very rarely happen. Bizarre.

Same!

My car has a personalised plate (came with it) and tinted windows (as made by the factory). It's not hurting anyone.

35965a · 13/08/2022 12:43

I see these things a lot. I live in a city so obviously very heavy traffic. You see a lot of dangerous and illegal things on the road every day. In my area it’s the policing. They’re nowhere to be seen. Even when there are groups of young teenagers on illegal bikes doing wheelies on the wrong side of the road.

SNAFU247 · 13/08/2022 12:50

I rarely see these apart from the double yellows parking now and again. Never see windows tinted illegally and not sure I even completely understand the number plate stuff (they all look the same here!).

I'd say this isn't a UK exclusive thing though. Drivers in other countries are known for being shit too. You're always going to find bad drivers everywhere there are cars. Not everyone is good at everything and then a proportion will be dickheads.

MaisyMoo2022 · 13/08/2022 12:52

OP, I'm in Manchester and see the things you see and worse on a daily basis.

It wasn't always like this. I'd say things have got worse in the past five years or so.

My car was cloned a couple of years ago. I only found out when the cloned vehicle was involved in an accident and the police came knocking!

Yep the issue is I live here and The lack of people not holding others accountable is the issue.

for example in melb you will be told within 15 minutes by others if you aren’t wearing a helmet and you’ll get fined. No one goes through red lights etc.
