AIBU to report my neighbors parents for their dangerous & unfit driving

My neighbors have gone away for a couple of weeks leaving their parents to look after their home & pets ( 1x dog & 1x cat). Lovely old couple, don’t appear too frail however, both are quite possibly the worst drivers/parker’s ever! A few years ago they backed into my car leaving a dent from their tow bar ( I only prey they never took to the road with a trailer or worse, caravan), this I never reported as I had no actual evidence other than my son (Age 17 at the time) witnessing it from inside my home. My DH and I are currently painting our home and therefore, being up 3 storeys can see anyone parking on our street ( on street parking btw). This couple have attempted spots in their little Fiat 500 on numerous occasions that I could park a cruise ship in. Additionally, both endearingly & amusingly they take turns trying to park and on several occasions have hit and gone over the curb at speed. Furthermore, they have nearly run each other over in their haste. Needless to say they should not be behind the wheel, I don’t even want to think of the carnage they could potentially cause to people/property whilst driving or parking elsewhere. Should I. put a note through their door on neighbours return ( we speak quite often to them, but certain that this would definitely upset & anger them).

I wouldn't agonise over whether to report their driving - put one in if it makes you feel more comfortable, but don't hold your breath for any action. Anything requiring human interaction by the DVLA, regarding medical matters is subject to a massive backlog. I'm waiting for my medical licence, which expired at the beginning of July, to be renewed and they haven't even started enquiries and can give me know timescale when they will. People don't seem to realise that practically all public services are actually falling to pieces!

TooBored1 · 13/08/2022 17:35

Please report. We had just such a driver on our road - started with struggling to park, not quite in control and escalated to once nearly knocking me off my bike as they didn't see me coming, and once nearly hitting a child by mounting the pavement when trying to park.

Couple months later, confirmed Dementia case. Very sad case as they were lovely neighbours but he was so dangerous on the road.

sunglassesonthetable · 13/08/2022 17:59

*Who made you the arbiter of parking standards? Parking and driving are not the same thing .

If you see them going out drunk, or without functioning brake lights or with an unrestrained child as a passenger, report them.

But otherwise, their parking skills not meeting your standards is none of your business.*

Think you've missed the point tbh. we're probably all the arbitrators of driving standards for each other.

It sort of works like that with help from the Police. That's how people get reported.

If they're parking dangerously - and we all know what that looks like. Yes report to the DVLA.

I didn't realise you could do that until I read it on here. So I'm taking it at good faith that it's accurate.

Report to police
just look at that horrifying tragedy of the poor 5 month old killed by a woman whose licence should have been taken from her.

im not sure why you refer to this as ‘endearing’ or amusing’.

poor baby Louis.

Definitely report to DVLA. I can't understand why PPs are telling you not to.

Being unable to control speed, direction and braking when parking is definitely dangerous driving. OP has said they're mounting the kerb at speed.

Absolutely agree!

Cinderella1 · 13/08/2022 18:19

Awhile ago my car was badly scraped from a driver who clearly couldn't judje the narrow lanes distance. Turned out he had a stroke 20 days ago but apparently felt well enough to drive 🤨 When I went through my chemo a couple of times, I stopped driving. People need to stop thinking of their own convenience and start caring about the safety of others (if not their own).

RandomMess · 13/08/2022 18:30

@Cinderella1 that's illegal.

Compulsory month of no driving after a stroke however mild it was!!

SeasonFinale · 13/08/2022 18:41

As regard the damage to your car put a note through the neighbours door stating that one of her parents hit your car and ask if they can ask their parents to provide their insurance details so you can make a claim.

The lady who was driving with undiagnosed dementia is local to where I live and it's a terrible case. I would have no problem reporting erratic driving of which parking is indeed an element to the police/DVLA.

Fizzorgin · 13/08/2022 19:02

Tbh I'm a super confident driver, happy driving whatever I'm put in. However can I parallel park? Can I bobbins - I bloody hate it. Give me a space I can drive into any day of the week and yes, I have sometimes mounted the kerb to do so HOWEVER there has never been anyone on it at the time and I have never ever endangered anyone with my really rather shite attempts to park.

That's the question here really as opposed to their ability to park - rather than their lack of special awareness/inability to park, are they actually dangerous? And there are numerous examples of drivers (of all ages I'd like it noted) who have hit the accelerator instead of the brake and ended up in shop fronts etc.

Yes, I learned that afterwards, not our fault but could've been a lot worse, caused us quite a bit of stress and inconvenience at the time.

Yanbu.

Report the damage to your car and the rest of your concerns. Of course there is evidence- witness evidence is one of the best types of evidence!

StoneofDestiny · 13/08/2022 20:03

Being able to park is a vital part of driving safely! Everybody has to park their car.
Ive seen and read about people bashing into other cars while trying to park, and seen older drivers mounting the kerb and causing mayhem - one, a neighbour, knocked down a garden post trying to park in his driveway and accelerated to hit his garage door. Inanimate objects - but next time might not be.
Quite often it's declining eyesight, slower reactions and mixing up pedals. Of course, younger drivers can foul up - but if I saw someone systematically driving erratically I would report.

Comments like yours make me angry. People who cannot park are definitely drivers who should be retested

I think you are overreacting. A lot of us didn't have to do parking as part of our tests and we are perfectly capable of driving properly and have decent spatial awareness. In fact I think people lack spatial awareness in other ways - for example when they insist on turning right across busy traffic when there's a roundabout to the left of them.

If you can't park, you just make a hash of it. And either you find a different space or go in a car park or whatever. Or drive in instead of reversing in (may not be recommended but plenty of people do it). If you end up driving onto a pavement at speed, your parking skills are not the issue, your driving skills are.

I am not overreacting.

Exactly this.

And many many more tragic cases.

So many of us have had to suffer the loss of loved ones due to drivers who should not have been on the road.

Anyone making light of bad parking clearly haven't lost loved ones due to a car in the wrong hands.

BigCheeseSandwich · 13/08/2022 21:06

A five year old was killed near me (Auckland) last year by an elderly man trying to park his car. I’d report, OP, but not sure how far you’d get.

Blanketpolicy · 13/08/2022 21:12

Please call 101 and "report" them for not being able to parallel park and let us know what the police say 😁. Wait until mid week when they are quieter and might appreciate a laugh

Walkingtheplank · 13/08/2022 21:12

YANBU to report this to DVLA.
Better to report this and let the professionals decide than do nothing with the potential of something catastrophic happening.
