Anyone else swell up in this heat?

Fedupwiththeheatnow · 12/08/2022 20:41

My entire body bloats when it's this hot, and I feel really uncomfortable. Easily looks like I've gained 5lbs from water retention. I drink lots of fluids but nothing makes a difference.
I see lots of women in shorts, skirts and nice dresses but I'm living in long, floaty dresses to cover myself up. Does anyone else have this?

My feet and ankles always used to swell in hot weather. I take magnesium tablets now and drink much more water and it has stopped the swelling completely.

This is me!!
I spend all night weeing and all day bloating up. It's a delight.

I wake up like a whale, pee all day and am slimmer by bedtime!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 12/08/2022 22:34

@DatingIsDifficult just a good pinch or two each day it’s hot (for me - it’s over 25°c)
In the 70s we used to get salt tablets to swallow with fluids and they were tiny - around the size of a sweetener you have in coffee/tea. So not much! Hence why I just eat a packet of crisps - those small ones you get in a family pack, or sprinkle some on a boiled egg/half a tomato/some
cold boiled potatoes. Even some salty buttery toast would be enough.
I wouldn’t drink salty water - that would
make you vomit.

cosyteapot · 12/08/2022 22:34

Ah she's probably got sweaty hands like everyone else

Madhairday · 12/08/2022 22:38

Yes OP me too! Massive swollen feet and ankles, fingers, belly and boobs soooo uncomfortable. And yes to peeing half the night!

Interested in the magnesium tablets a pp mentioned - there must be a way to correct this. Salt doesn't work for me, tried eating lots of salted nuts and drinking loads but if anything it makes it worse...

Alleycat1 · 12/08/2022 22:52

I swell up even without the heat as I have had so many lymph glands removed. I can weigh half a stone heavier by the end of the day ( have clothes in 3 sizes) so you can imagine how much worse it is in this heat. Exercise makes it worse. I detest my now heavy legs and swollen feet and ankles and the peeing at night is a real pain.

Can you please tell me what exact dosage of magnesium you take and where you get them?

@Chemenger
I've just been searching for magnesium tablets for this reason - which do you take? Do you get any side effects? TIA

crimsonlake · 12/08/2022 23:06

Thank god it is not just me then.
I keep telling friends I am swelling up in this heat and they look at me as if I am crazy.
I normally only have to look at food and my stomach seems to bloat, but in this heat I feel like a beached whale.
I can't see any noticeable difference in my slim legs but my feet and calves feel very tight and uncomfortable. I am currently trying to ease the discomfort lying with a cold, damp towel over them.
I never get up in the night to go to the loo, but having read some of these posts now realise why I have started getting up to use the toilet these past few nights.
I like to add salt on my food so clearly this has not helped, I might try a bit more tomorrow to see if this makes any difference

Bunty55 · 12/08/2022 23:10

I am so glad someone started this thread. I am not alone :)
We went to the seaside today and I walked a lot. Tonight I have swollen ankles and have been googling it. The last time my ankles swelled was 30 years ago when my youngest was overdue.
It's the heat innit

crimsonlake · 12/08/2022 23:13

Well having read about magnesium to reduce the swelling I have just got up to take one out of a tub that I had in a drawer, hoping this will ease my discomfort.

No. 32 isn't that hot. You British are so funny 🤣

It is no laughing matter. 950 people are feared to have died in Britain due to the July heatwave. We're just not set up for it here.

caringcarer · 13/08/2022 00:12

My ankles look like a pair of knees. My skin feels too tight. I am drinking so much water.

Deux · 13/08/2022 08:10

A few other things that I find help/helped. I used to Iive somewhere hot and these things helped.

Try wearing footwear that isn’t completely flat, where there is a rise at the heel, maybe even try wearing trainers loosely tied if you’ve got to walk a lot. Even in the house, especially if you’ve got concrete floors/solid floors. Flip flops are terrible as they’re so flat and we need to use toes to grip them.

Do some Calf raises, so raise heels then back down again. Also some wide legged squats. I find these help

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 13/08/2022 09:00

Since I got a knee injury my lower leg swells badly. It's been horrible in this heat, really tight and uncomfortable, and the swelling is far worse than usual.

I also peed all night.

No. 32 isn't that hot. You British are so funny 🤣

You are ignorant about how the human body keeps cools.

32 degrees air temperature at 70% humidity (not uncommon for the UK) is equivalent to 42 degrees at 30% humidity. Have a play with the Web Bulb Calculator which shows how human beings actually experience heat based on humidity.

Secondly, people who live in countries that routinely experience hot weather (a) acclimatise to it and (b) don't experience it 24 hours a day thanks to homes and offices that are built to stay cooler than the outside temperature. UK homes are built to trap the heat in. And they do!

Garlicjazz · 13/08/2022 09:13

Dandelion root tea is a natural diuretic and helps with swelling. Tastes like crap but it works!

nottalot · 13/08/2022 09:34

Yes! I've put on five pounds in a week (while not eating much) and I feel bloated all over. I will try adding more salt today, thanks for the tip.

Chemenger · 13/08/2022 11:57

I posted about the magnesium tablets - the reason I haven’t come back to specify what I take is that we moved house yesterday and I can’t find them!

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 13/08/2022 14:34

My boobs and inner thighs puff up in heat, so uncomfortable

Chemenger · 13/08/2022 14:43

Found them! The ones I take are 500mg of magnesium oxide, one a day. I’ve seen lots of people say that the oxide isn’t effective but they work for me. You can buy other types that are more absorbable but I’ve stuck with the cheap ones. When I first started taking them, when my feet were really swollen, I spent a day drinking lots of water, a glass an hour, which seemed to “reset” things. My feet will start swelling if it’s hot and I haven’t been drinking enough. It’s counter intuitive in that your body stores water if it thinks it will need it, the more you drink the less it stores it, or at least that’s how it seems to me.

simpledeer · 13/08/2022 14:47

Interesting thread.

I do not swell up in the heat and never have. I used to live in a ridiculously hot country too and wasn't affected in this way.

However, I do consume far too much salt Blush so maybe it is saving me bloat whilst destroying my arteries Grin

TheSparkling · 13/08/2022 14:54

I have realised this year that my feet and ankles are swelling in the heat. Yesterday I couldn't get home from work soon enough to undo the straps on my sandals and they were on the loosest hole already. I wonder if it's an age/menopause thing because apart from when I was pregnant I don't remember this happening in previous years.

Chemenger · 13/08/2022 14:55

Mine definitely got worse from about the age of 50.
