Working out in back garden - neighbours complaining.

I had a baby a few months ago and trying to shift the baby weight which I have gained.

The last few mornings around 10:30am I have been going into our back garden to do a workout on apple fitness+. I have been wearing my headphones as quite frankly my neighbours don't need to hear the cheesy "come on, push it harder" motivation chat from the fitness instructor.

This morning after my workout (I do HIIT - 20 minutes), the neighbour next door came to the door and asked if I could work out inside as they are trying to relax in their back garden in peace and watch their fish. I was a bit taken aback. My DH heard this and came to the door and politely said that I'm not making lots of noise, it's day light and we are entitled to work out in our garden. He pointed out what will they think when our daughter is older and playing in the garden? The neighbour responded "that's different" Hmm and apparently my panting noises are a bit "erotic sounding". At this point we said to the neighbour that again, I'm not making excessive noise and that I'm simply working out. His response? "Well join a gym then"

I'm actually really annoyed. We have CCTV outside the property so I checked to hear how loud I am when working out and honestly hardly any noise, mostly just heavy breathing which the camera struggled to pick up. It's not like I'm making noises like Monica from friends when she gets her massage.

I also have a gym in the garage so why would I join a gym? We live in a detached house so no risk of noise to adjoining walls etc. there's not that much floor space to do the workouts inside the garage. Before baby I didn't do the HIIT.

The reason for me working out in the back garden is my DH is working from home and my baby is napping so I don't want to be creating noise inside to wake up baby or disturb DH working. If baby wakes up the monitor pings a notification to my phone so I will know if she is awake and will stop workout to tend to baby.

Neighbour only moved in about 6 months ago and never had any issues since.

Who is BU? Me or the neighbour?

Oh, for godsake, some people just look for arguments. They really do. Any opportunity to throw their weight around, or upset someone else, and they're there. Someone exercising in their garden is hardly being intrusive. If you were playing loud music, or letting your dog bark all night, or had a car with a modified exhaust, that would be different.

Also, what idiots! They've now p*ssed you off and turned you against them. They ought to read some of the old mumsnet threads on nightmare neighbors - maybe then they'd realize they've nothing to complain about.

Mytortoiseisbetter · 12/08/2022 14:08

to your neighbour if your body is noticeable it must be something to do with sex.
All the commentary about the Lionesses using their bodies for themselves not to be looked at -it is true -this is the “normal” background they were contrasting Lionesses to :(

Sheepreallylikerichteabiscuits · 12/08/2022 14:12

Your neighbour complaining is a man isn't he?

Because lets face it your 'exercise noises are too erotic' is just a variation on 'woman cover your hair to stop me from my lustful thoughts'

Interesting modern twist on an age old story

Sapphirensteel · 12/08/2022 14:13

Your neighbour’s are barking.
You use your garden how you like , they use their how they like. I’d have laughed at them.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/08/2022 14:13

You're in a detached garden but you're loud enough for him to listen to your erotic noises and feel discomfited by his own arousal so not sure you're that quiet. That said, you're allowed to make reasonable noise in your garden so ignore

RainbowsMoonbeams · 12/08/2022 14:15

So they are allowed to use their garden how they please, but you can’t?! As for the comments your breathing sounds erotic?! Well, this bit made it clear they are complete weirdos 🤣

Sandcastlesinthesky · 12/08/2022 14:15

It would annoy me but only because im
too lazy to do something like that myself. Ignore them. Crazy people

Aberration · 12/08/2022 14:15

I would be tempted to take a speaker out with you and play the sounds of a lawnmower for twenty minutes while you exercise . Would cover up your breathing !

Moonface123 · 12/08/2022 14:17

l have come to the conclusion that people are addicted to complain

gelatogina · 12/08/2022 14:17

Not unreasonable at all! If you weren’t wearing headphones and it was going on all day then yes it would be annoying. But a short work out with headphones? Totally fine!

ladymaiasaura · 12/08/2022 14:17

If your neighbours are that easily disturbed they should move to the arse end of nowhere where they have no neighbours!! They are idiots. You are fine.

user1471538283 · 12/08/2022 14:18

He sounds like a old perv. And he wants to police your activities.

I am very noise sensitive but unless its loud music or constant shouting I am okay with it.

He has no idea what a bad neighbor is.

mewkins · 12/08/2022 14:18

Get your husband to join you and both ramp up the erotic noises. They are weird.

I almost hyperventilated laughing when it got to 'they want to watch their fish' 🤣. And then the erotic bit! Jeez they are nuts.

OP well done you, keep the work outs going. They are literally mental.

GoodThinkingMax · 12/08/2022 14:19

Either you're barely making any noise or you're making enough noise to have to work out outside because it would wake baby/disturb DH.

I noticed this too. @LuciferKitty either you’re not making any noise, (in which case, your neighbours are BU) or you’re making enough noise to wake your sleeping baby or disturb your working DH, in which case your neighbours are NBU.

Which is it?

I'm in a detached house - the gardens share a fence.

A lot of the noise of working out indoors, especially at a HIIT, is the thumping of landing on a sprung floor, which you don't get outside.

GlutenLover · 12/08/2022 14:21

TBH my former neighbour used to do HIIT in the garden and made some rather disturbing noises. He sounded like he was in labour half the time, and having sex the rest of the time but I wouldn't have dreamed of saying anything though it was a little unsettling.

Dammit, that was supposed to be a reply to the post about either you're making too much noise to work out inside or you're not. It's genuinely quieter to work out on grass than it is to work out indoors.

As mentioned up thread, I live in an upside down house. If I work out upstairs on the wooden floors, it would make a noise to where my baby is napping. All bedrooms are downstairs.

I workout outside on the grass as if I'm doing burpees or anything that involves a slight jump, you won't hear the thud.

Erotic grunting my arse! Does he sit whacking off to Wimbledon?

Plenty of people make a noise in their garden which they wouldn't in a room with a sleeping baby though so that's irrelevant

I mean no one tries to put their baby down for a nap next to a lawn mower, or a hedge trimmer, or some kids on a trampoline

If the only noise level we are now allowed in the garden is 'not loud enough to wake a sleeping baby' then that's insane. Is everyone really tiptoeing around whispering?

Cedilla · 12/08/2022 14:28

Well, if you will have the utter audacity to breathe, OP…….

Seriously, your neighbour clearly has too much time on his hands if this is all he has to worry him, so please ignore and carry right on as you were. Suggest he concentrates a bit harder on his fish.

Our NDNs have small, energetic children who are constantly out in the garden trampolining, footballing and bellowing at the tops of their voices, and not once have we said anything about it, because that’s the hurlyburly of life when you aren’t a batshit loon

PatientlyWaiting21 · 12/08/2022 14:30

You’re neighbour is batshit!! Please make more noise!! And you absolutely do not need to justify why you are working out outside. Good for you, I bet you feel awesome afterwards.
