Working out in back garden - neighbours complaining.

I had a baby a few months ago and trying to shift the baby weight which I have gained.

The last few mornings around 10:30am I have been going into our back garden to do a workout on apple fitness+. I have been wearing my headphones as quite frankly my neighbours don't need to hear the cheesy "come on, push it harder" motivation chat from the fitness instructor.

This morning after my workout (I do HIIT - 20 minutes), the neighbour next door came to the door and asked if I could work out inside as they are trying to relax in their back garden in peace and watch their fish. I was a bit taken aback. My DH heard this and came to the door and politely said that I'm not making lots of noise, it's day light and we are entitled to work out in our garden. He pointed out what will they think when our daughter is older and playing in the garden? The neighbour responded "that's different" Hmm and apparently my panting noises are a bit "erotic sounding". At this point we said to the neighbour that again, I'm not making excessive noise and that I'm simply working out. His response? "Well join a gym then"

I'm actually really annoyed. We have CCTV outside the property so I checked to hear how loud I am when working out and honestly hardly any noise, mostly just heavy breathing which the camera struggled to pick up. It's not like I'm making noises like Monica from friends when she gets her massage.

I also have a gym in the garage so why would I join a gym? We live in a detached house so no risk of noise to adjoining walls etc. there's not that much floor space to do the workouts inside the garage. Before baby I didn't do the HIIT.

The reason for me working out in the back garden is my DH is working from home and my baby is napping so I don't want to be creating noise inside to wake up baby or disturb DH working. If baby wakes up the monitor pings a notification to my phone so I will know if she is awake and will stop workout to tend to baby.

Neighbour only moved in about 6 months ago and never had any issues since.

Who is BU? Me or the neighbour?

So at 10.30am - "they are trying to relax in their back garden in peace and watch their fish." And thinking that your "panting noises are a bit "erotic sounding".".

Your new neighbours are very strange people. And I find myself wondering, had it been your DH out in the garden panting - do you think your neighbour would have come complaining?

RhiLH2523 · 12/08/2022 13:29

Omg your neighbour needs to get over themselves. You are doing nothing wrong and I hate that they have now made you feel conscious about doing something good for yourself!! Personally, I would retaliate and play my music (not loudly) but I would play it out loud, see which option they prefer, music or no music and hearing some breathing sounds. What a loser.

GreenManalishi · 12/08/2022 13:29

Also, if he tells you to go to the gym again, tell him to piss of to the aquarium! Watch his fish, lord have mercy, how can you stop him watching his fish from your garden!

My neighbour started doing HIIT in her garage every morning at 8 AM. She has the music turned on and I can hear it inside my house. I would never complain. It’s a short time and I can live with it. Your neighbours aren’t nice.

lawandgin · 12/08/2022 13:34

I'm not hugely tolerant of my neighbours making noise but omg, they ADBU! Good for you working out OP, can you send some motivation my way please? I have a 4 month old and 2 stone to shift 😂

Whammyyammy · 12/08/2022 13:35

Not only would I ignore them, headphones would no longer be worn.... until they come round to apologise to you

Iizzyb · 12/08/2022 13:35

Play your music, sing along, cheer at the end, do a few high five's with the instructors - and then go back later & do the yoga.

What horrible people op. Good for you. I'd suggest les mills app (good offer on currently via Tesco rewards apparently) they make a LOT of noise on their workouts.

I love the music instructors play at the end of a session too so I'd suggest something like We Are The Champions to play at the end too x

mamabear715 · 12/08/2022 13:36

Shall I invite them round to mine? Neighbours a street away seem to be having serious work done in / on their garden, two mini digger things that go POOP POOP when reversing! ;-) (I can see them from my daughter's bedroom window.) Not bothering me!

Either you're barely making any noise or you're making enough noise to have to work out outside because it would wake baby/disturb DH.

Either way though, they ABU - it is your garden and 20 minutes puffing and panting is not unreasonable at that time of day. It was considerate of you to wear headphones.

I don't think this is true. Some normal every day noises can still be a disturbance when working from home, or when someone is sleeping.

Like I wouldn't want to listen to the washing machine all night, or the toilet flushing constantly when I'm trying to work.

But they're all very normal noises that might create some disturbance.

OPs garden is the perfect place to do exercise as it creates distance from those who can be disturbed.

Kids run around, jump, scream, shout, pant and breathe in gardens all the time.

OP is not unreasonable.

AStar98 · 12/08/2022 13:41

You're not being unreasonable at all, good on you for working out in this heat!

Ignore your neighbours, people need to learn to be more tolerant.

Luredbyapomegranate · 12/08/2022 13:42

Ignore them.

They are bonkers.

Possibly up the panting for your own entertainment

Flamingooooooooooooooo · 12/08/2022 13:42

It's 20 fucking minutes a day! Tell him to go inside for 20 minutes if he's that bothered.

35965a · 12/08/2022 13:43

Your neighbours are nutters, I’d have laughed in their faces.

KarmaComma · 12/08/2022 13:43

This one's easy. Blast the music out to cover up your erotic workout breathing.

fiorentina · 12/08/2022 13:43

I can hear my next door but one neighbour working out with weights in the garden and would never complain. I have done HIIT sessions in the past outside, my neighbours coped. They sound odd to be honest, I’d carry on.

megletthesecond · 12/08/2022 13:45

Yanbu.
I work out with speakers too. When my skanky neighbours stop smoking weed and having bbq's over my laundry then I might care about 20 mins music.

Cognacsoft · 12/08/2022 13:46

Are you sure @LuciferKitty your ndn didn’t say he was on plenty of fish?

Ignore.

REP22 · 12/08/2022 13:47

I'd tell them that their fish are swimming too loudly, and could they ask their little piscine children to "tone down" their exuberant aquabatics.

Sounds like you were being very considerate, and in no way unreasonable. They're out of line.

I might also be tempted to consider a jar of tartare sauce as their Christmas present, but perhaps that's a step too far. 😉

idrinkandiknowthings · 12/08/2022 13:47

Hilarious 😂

I say crank your music up without headphones and pant as loudly as you can.

I put out a couple of wine bottles recently in the recycling bin. Admittedly it was quite late but it was the weekend. Neighbour over the road shouted at me through his open bedroom window saying he was trying to sleep. I went inside, got another bottle and threw it in the bin then stood there defiantly with my hands on my hips. Petty, I know, but satisfying. And yes, I realise I was probably BU!

ANUsernam · 12/08/2022 13:52

I'd forget about the headphones and just start playing the annoying music too so they don't have to listen to your 'erotic sounding noises'.

(Though you want to get the volume right to annoy them without also annoying your other neighbors who are already unfortunate enough to have to deal with the same crazies you have to deal with)

I'd also start extolling the virtues of the workouts to their other surrounding neighbours and try to encourage them to use their gardens for their workouts too Grin

Lucked · 12/08/2022 13:53

i think doing star jumps, skipping and running etc can disturb a whole house whilst it has little impact on the surroundings if done outside on solid ground, so I get the reference to it being disturbing to those inside.

I think you sound very considerate with your headphones. Neighbour is ridiculous.

LookItsMeAgain · 12/08/2022 14:03

LuciferKitty · 12/08/2022 12:42

DH says next time leave your headphones in the house.... tempted lol!

Next time baby is unsettled and crying, I'll be sure to bring her outside to calm down Wink

The mind boggles on how others think at times!

Do all of the above.

Add in extra Monica Seles grunts as well for bonus points

Also 100% agree with the poster who suggested that if he wants to watch fish to go to an aquarium.

Your neighbour is being 10000000000% unreasonable.
They could put some noise cancelling headphones on to listen to the back catalogue of The Archers while you're doing your exercise.

Cactusdancer · 12/08/2022 14:03

I would be having my friends round for a full on aerobics session to the sound of a piper playing Ibiza chill out tunes!!!!

Sceptre86 · 12/08/2022 14:03

You've actually just given me the push I've needed to start making a real attempt to lose my baby weight and my baby will be 1 soon. Your neighbor's an idiot, carry on as you are.
