Thieving neighbours

Several months ago I ordered a delivery of fish and chips. It didn't arrive and when I called the shop they said they had delivered it. They then resent it and when the driver came he told me where they had delivered it, to a flat with the same number as our house but a different road. We were inconvenienced somewhat as we were all hungry, especially my daughter, and had to chase after the food and then wait for it to come. So we probably had a 1.5 hour wait rather than half an hour. These are people we don't know. Who keeps someone else's food?!

Anyway fast forward to today we get an Amazon parcel delivered. For the fish and chip thieves. My DP is all oh I'll take it round later and give it to them. I'm not as nice as him and I think sod them, let them have the inconvenience of locating it. He said two wrongs don't make a right. Yes that's true but I'm not stealing anything, I'm just keeping it safely for them to collect and I don't see why we should put ourselves out for thieves, if they come for it I will happily hand it over. I may be being a bit of a twat but at the same time I think sod them. He's now huffing with me in a self righteous way. AIBU?

I think you're being mean. They might not have known how to find who the fish and chips were for, and one could have thought the other ordered it. Whereas you do know who this parcel is meant for.

Passthetena · 11/08/2022 17:35

If it was a different road they delivered to how on earth were they meant to find you? And its not like you lost out financially

PumpkinPie2016 · 11/08/2022 17:35

I get that losing your fish and chips was a bit of a nightmare for you. Yes, who ever received it should have told the driver it wasn't theirs. However, can you be absolutely 100% certain it was them? If it is flats, it could have been someone who happened to be on the landing/stairwell, maybe even someone who didn't live there. Maybe they were away and had someone looking after the flat. There are numerous possibilities.

I would drop their amazon parcel off-DH is right.

JiggeryJiggerson · 11/08/2022 17:36

The difference being the Amazon parcel got left at our door. The fish and chips would have been handed to them and not abandoned at their door. If someone tried to deliver hot food to me I'd ask my partner if he'd ordered it before I accepted delivery rather than just steal someone's food.

The thieving neighbours didn't order fish and chips, so they should have refused delivery. Boot the package next to your front door and wait until they knock. If it not collected within 5 days, open it and keep it if it's something you can use, otherwise eBay or charity shop.

Treaclex69 · 11/08/2022 17:39

They shouldn't have accepted your food delivery and I personally think they should come to collect their parcel. I currently have one of next doors parcels sat in my hallway that they haven't bothered to come and collect but me being stubborn I'm refusing to take it round as I'm not a postie Grin

Come off it. They knew it wasn’t theirs and it’s theft. Our neighbours do this too but thankfully not with our stuff. I received two iced lattes I didn’t order with my deliveroo this week and I immediately messaged deliveroo to explain. They said I could keep them but the point was to let them know so there was a chance for the driver to collect them and for someone else not to be put out.

i would keep the package and when they come to collect ask how the fish and chips were

Benedictcucumber · 11/08/2022 17:45

I'd absolutely keep the parcel and if they don't turn up for it I'd open it and keep the contents. We have a similar set up - there are two uniquely named roads in our town, think Bramble Road and Bramble Avenue. We are always getting mail for the same number on the other road. Once I had an email saying my parcel had been delivered, my doorstep was empty so I went to the other road and it was on their doorstep so I took it. Have even had an angry note from a taxi driver saying he waited for 20 minutes to take us to the airport for our holiday and if we didn't want the taxi we should've cancelled it. Wonder if they ever made it to the airport on time! If they turn up to collect it and they're arseholes to you in person I'd probably just deny having received it.

SmellyStinkyPong · 11/08/2022 17:45

I'd take it round and say half jokingly, oi you're the ones that had our fish, as I gave them their parcel
My door goes all the time for the kids food that I didn't know they'd ordered so I would have happily taken it

EllaPaella · 11/08/2022 17:47

So you are also 'thieving neighbours'? 😉 I would just wait for them to come and collect it then mention the fact that they received your fish n chips a few weeks ago..

SirChenjins · 11/08/2022 17:50

Hell no, I wouldn't rush round with it, I'm not that nice. They took delivery of your f&c - let them come and collect it.

jetadore · 11/08/2022 17:54

Well it’s very tempting in these situations to give in to your baser instincts, but I have to say, as the old saying goes, the best revenge is living well revenge. I’m 100% with you op, fuck ‘em!

@Passthetena it's a block of flats at the end of our street but the entrance is on a different street. But I'm not suggesting for one minute they should have come looking for us. I'm suggesting they shouldn't have accepted food they didn't order. It's not hard to shout to whoever else is in the flat to see if they ordered food. I've had pizza turn up at my door several times and I've asked the driver which address he had and then shown him where the address is.

@EllaPaella I'm not stealing it at all. It's here safely for them when they want to collect it. The driver left it on the street so at least it's now safe.

Just don't sprinkle it with salt and vinegar.

I’d keep hold of it and wait for them to come around. Then ask them if they enjoyed the fish and chips 😂

ladymaiasaura · 11/08/2022 18:20

Have I missed something? How are they supposed to collect it? They won’t know where it is.

amylou8 · 11/08/2022 18:22

I wouldn't be putting myself out in anyway to reunite them with their parcel. It would sit in my hallway ignored until either they or Amazon knocked the door for it. After what I considered an appropriate amount of time I'd have a nose in the box and decided what was happening to the contents.

abblie · 11/08/2022 18:23

Oh I would be so doing this 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Well if it was me I'd ring Amazon to see where it was left. Or I'd check the tracking in my Amazon account and see what that shows. I imagine they will have taken a photo of my front door too.

I guess that you too would steal someone else's takeaway then.

I don’t think Amazon tracking is that detailed. I’ve never known them take a photo of my door. Good luck to them if you do keep it.

Sellie555 · 11/08/2022 18:35

Tbf, I once opened the door to a nandos delivery. I assumed my teens had ordered so I took it

turned out it wasn’t them. I tried calling Nando repeatedly and no one picked up. We had already eaten dinner so weren’t at all hungry. And it was something we didn’t like, so sadly it went in the bin.

i even posted on a local Fb page about it cos I knew someone out there was missing their order! But never heard anything again.

ps obviously I checked with my immediate neighbours but it wasn’t them

GirlInACountrySong · 11/08/2022 18:37

You have no proof they had the food

Delivery driver MAY be lying?
