Thieving neighbours

Several months ago I ordered a delivery of fish and chips. It didn't arrive and when I called the shop they said they had delivered it. They then resent it and when the driver came he told me where they had delivered it, to a flat with the same number as our house but a different road. We were inconvenienced somewhat as we were all hungry, especially my daughter, and had to chase after the food and then wait for it to come. So we probably had a 1.5 hour wait rather than half an hour. These are people we don't know. Who keeps someone else's food?!

Anyway fast forward to today we get an Amazon parcel delivered. For the fish and chip thieves. My DP is all oh I'll take it round later and give it to them. I'm not as nice as him and I think sod them, let them have the inconvenience of locating it. He said two wrongs don't make a right. Yes that's true but I'm not stealing anything, I'm just keeping it safely for them to collect and I don't see why we should put ourselves out for thieves, if they come for it I will happily hand it over. I may be being a bit of a twat but at the same time I think sod them. He's now huffing with me in a self righteous way. AIBU?

Wait for them to come and collect it then ask them if they enjoyed the food you paid for.

Milesty1 · 11/08/2022 18:39

Leave it on their doorstep with a note saying ‘We know you stole the Fish and Chips, hope you enjoyed it….’

StoneofDestiny · 11/08/2022 18:40

Yes - in this instance I'd keep it for as long as it took them to collect it.

Albgo · 11/08/2022 18:41

Don't be as bad as they are - let your husband take it round to them.

PeppaPigIsAnnoying · 11/08/2022 18:47

Hold on to the parcel and if they come round, ask them if they enjoyed your fish and chips

johnd2 · 11/08/2022 18:54

There's a lot of imagination here about the neighbours based on no information!
Someone I knew heard a noise outside their flat and found an expensive takeaway.
Phoned the company and they said no problem just keep it as they can't take it back.
Fast forward half an hour and another noise, and there is another bag of food, identical to the first one!
Clearly someone had let the driver through the secure front door but it wasn't them. But perhaps the people who actually ordered it were livid with my colleague?

Mississipi71 · 11/08/2022 18:56

I completely agree with you OP. YANBU

Don’t be so petty…

Ourlady · 11/08/2022 19:03

Keep it and wait. I wouldn’t be traipsing to their house the thieving gits.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 11/08/2022 19:07

I'm suggesting they shouldn't have accepted food they didn't order.
My teenagers would have just blankly thanked the driver and thought great, mum ordered a chippy tea. By the time it arrived in the kitchen table the driver would have left with no clue where they came from and who they were for.

This.

It's not your job to take parcels to someone elses address. Let them do their own work tracking it down

Longdistance · 11/08/2022 20:09

Yanbu. Hold on to that parcel until the cf dare show their faces.

I live in X gardens, the next street it X road (imaginative of the builders). A parcel of mine went missing and I sent dh round. The cf opened it, because clearly size 8 pink sparkly shoes really suit him! Dh went mad at him.

Anyone honest would turn round and say ‘sorry, wrong address, this isn’t for me!’

You have no proof they had the food

Delivery driver MAY be lying?

Why? I don't get why people always feel the need to create alternative scenarios to the most obvious. That said, i would probably rise above it as a one off situation and drop it around.

Don’t be so petty…

I would be 'petty' in that situation....
As OP is doing, I'd keep the package safe and wait for them to come knocking. They are full-blown CFs.

ChsmpagneWannaBe · 11/08/2022 20:40

I'm on your side wiry this one. Wink

Hobele · 11/08/2022 21:14

You could look at it differently: fish thieves made your poor local chippie out of pocket. Amazon can definitely afford the loss of whatever and will probably send them a replacement anyway.

Yoloohno · 11/08/2022 21:28

Please take it round, I say that as someone who regularly gets things for the identical address in the next village that’s on the same road, including late night takeaways waking me up.

But they’ve also bought things down to me that have been sent to them including post and veg boxes.

it’s annoying but 2 wrongs don’t make a right.

Exactly!

And when asked why would've said I dunno!

Give up the grudge OP!
