Lego

Settle an argument I am having with my cousin.

I like and enjoy Lego. I have a few sets, nothing insane. The most expensive being Hogwarts Castle.

Anyway, I just built some Lego and my cousin was here when I was dismantling it. He ask what I was doing, I thought it was pretty self explanatory and told him I was taking it apart. He asked why, as I had spent so much time putting it together. I said so I can rebuild it again when I wanted to and make a little game out of seeing if I can do it faster next time.

I have always done this. My Mother would buy us "building toys" (not Lego) for Christmas or birthdays and when we had built them and enjoyed them we were told to take them apart, so we could enjoy building them again later. This meant that we ended up with hours of fun all year round, especially school holidays (we didn't have much money so didn't go out much).

My question is; is this weird? He thinks it is.

I think that buying Lego just to build it once and then let it gather dust until you get bored and throw it away is ridiculously wasteful and expensive.

I have been told many times that Lego is so expensive and I am not going to say it isn't. I always thought that yes it is an expensive upfront cost but it is for hours/days/years of fun. I never understood people who complained. Now I'm wondering if most people are like my cousin and just build it once?

AIBU - Lego should be built once.
YANBU - Lego can be built multiple times and is always fun.

I have a fairly large Lego city which I don't take apart & a few other bits around the house as display pieces, but everything else gets taken apart, sometimes to be rebuilt as the model it was, other times to be built into other things.

You do with your Lego what you want, that's pretty much the point.

RuthBrenner · 11/08/2022 13:56

It's your Lego so do what you want with it. I prefer to build it then display it.

Needmorelego · 11/08/2022 14:00

Ooh a Lego thread.
Love a Lego thread (see my user name 🙂).
I have just spent the morning using 4 random sets (ie from completely different themes) and building them into a 'moc' (My Own Creation).
I don't have the space - or patience to dust - all my sets so what's on display gets rotated. At the moment there are 2 sets built as per their instructions and 3 mocs.

GimmeSleep · 11/08/2022 14:03

Urgh don't tell me your cousin would Kragle it too 😖

Boxowine · 11/08/2022 14:03

Of course you can build them over and over again. Just like puzzles.

My kids had a lot of Lego sets. I ended up selling them online and made a fortune. I recommend you keep the boxes and instructions in case you ever plan on selling them.

doilookremotelyinterested · 11/08/2022 14:07

I keep mine up for as long as I want to see it and then take it down till the next time. The rollercoaster is too big to stay up permanently! Plus I keep buying more sets so I need the 'display' space.

Whatsherusername · 11/08/2022 14:09

Bloody love lego! Every room in my house has some in it. Well except for the bathroom. Enjoy it how you want thats the beauty of it. Btw have you seen the new hogwarts express thats just been announced? I am lusting after that one!

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/08/2022 14:10

I love Lego! I want to do the big Disney castle set. Cost £300 and something!

Floralnomad · 11/08/2022 14:14

We display for a bit and then put them away but we literally don’t have the space or the liking for dusting to keep them all out as we have loads . My particular favourite is the large ( discontinued) Eiffel Tower which we did have on display for a few years . We’ve got the Winnie the Pooh treehouse on display at the moment but it’s in a Lego display case , which are expensive but worth it IMO .

MinkyWinky · 11/08/2022 14:18

It depends... My DD has a Hogwarts castle (that you can add sections to). It stays up as she plays with it. I also have some more display sets that I leave up. Other sets have been broken down and built again (esp the Christmas ones) or recreated into something completely new. I recently bought two boxes of bricks, just so we could do random builds.

There is no right way, just your way!

As an aside, we watch Lego Masters Australia and my DD now wants a brick pit... that's a no, but I'd love to be let loose in one😁

Any rocmendations? I like the large ones that take hours to build.

I don’t see how it’s weird at all. Where would you keep all the assembled stuff anyway?
I like doing jigsaw puzzles I always take them apart again - there’s something strangely satisfactory about that moment of taking it apart even though it took days to do 😄
Same thing surely.

PuttingDownRoots · 11/08/2022 14:21

I have limited display space, so some is dismantled and I rotate it. Especially since the prices just keep rising (a few years ago there were loads of adult sets under £100, now there are loads over £500...l

Anyway.. its yours. Not his.

No! But now I have seen it, I need it!

Also now I'm wondering what kind of Lego you could display in the bathroom?

I don't think that's weird at all. If it was me I'd probably display it for a bit and then take it down to build again another time.

I don't really build Lego stuff but I do like things like 3D jigsaw puzzles, including the ones where you effectively put together a double-layered map and add little plastic buildings to - I did Paris recently. I left that up for a while because it looked nice and was satisfying but I did dismantle it after a couple of months and I'll rebuild it at some point I'm sure.

lifechanginglemoncake · 11/08/2022 14:24

My husband and I love Lego. We have lots of sets and we build them, display them for a while, then dismantle them back into the boxes and bags to build again. We build similar themed ones so we can have a little display. Every year we enjoy making the Christmas sets.

I think, especially with kids, there seem to be two sorts of Lego enthusiast. Those who enjoy it for the build (either instructions or making something of their own) and others who see the build as the step towards playing with it.

stayathomer · 11/08/2022 14:26

My family are a HUGE Lego family (except me but I love seeing what they build!) Ds12 builds and saves, he has the equivalent of Lego land (obviously not but hogworts castle, multiple Lego city sets and most Lego Star Wars sets) around the room. Anything else he breaks up and it goes into the Lego box. The others break up everything except for standout stuff-some ninjago sets and Star Wars sets. They don’t get ds12 not wanting to just break them all up. As a result I couldn’t click yabu or yanbu😂 Saying that, life would be easier if I had some amazing storage solution!!

babyjellyfish · 11/08/2022 14:28

This thread is so wholesome.

gotelltheoldmandowntheroad · 11/08/2022 14:28

I'll go one better and say that those prescription build legos are pointless, and the whole point of lego is creativity. I got the blocks and would build whole cities, and if I got any set I would just incorporate that into my block collection and build things of my own creation. If my daughter gets sets I put them in her big tub. I won't even let her try to build it as she's told to because for me that's not lego. Lego is freedom. Lego is creativity.

husbandcallsmepickle · 11/08/2022 14:32

So far I've kept my Lego builds for display until my most recent one. I've got nearly to the end and realised something has gone wrong. Initially it pained me to take it apart and start over but once I did so, it's like having a brand new kit.
Once it's done I'm hankering after the typewriter.

cupcakedaisy · 11/08/2022 14:41

My Dh is absolutely besotted by LEGO and has been for MANY years. He alternates between sets (space and sci-fi) in this house and his own builds that he designs. Some sets stay on display (yes Saturn V i'm looking at you 😀) and others he breaks up to make new ones when he can't find the right piece! Do what makes you happy and enjoy your LEGO sets. I used to love using spare LEGO pieces to make the roads for my towns and would spread it out across rooms!

Needmorelego · 11/08/2022 14:47

@TheLibrary I tend to go for smaller sets - a £50 spend is a rare but for me.
I got the Encanto house at Christmas - it's so pretty.
I like the Creator 3 in 1 sets.
I like to get a Creator set or a Classic box and combine with one from a theme like City or Friends or Ninjago and build something completely bizarre. I did a dinosaur house a while ago. Have to see if I can find a picture.

nauticant · 11/08/2022 14:52

Any rocmendations? I like the large ones that take hours to build.

The large buildings (called Modulars) take days:

www.lego.com/en-gb/themes/creator-expert

There's a fair chance that if you have a complete set of one of these to sell in a few years' time you'll make a profit (more likely if you keep the box and the instructions).

SisterAgatha · 11/08/2022 14:54

Yanbu, Lego to a lot of people is a 3D puzzle these days: it’s taken all the fun out of it.

Needmorelego · 11/08/2022 14:54

@TheLibrary here's my Dino House !!
