Lego

Settle an argument I am having with my cousin.

I like and enjoy Lego. I have a few sets, nothing insane. The most expensive being Hogwarts Castle.

Anyway, I just built some Lego and my cousin was here when I was dismantling it. He ask what I was doing, I thought it was pretty self explanatory and told him I was taking it apart. He asked why, as I had spent so much time putting it together. I said so I can rebuild it again when I wanted to and make a little game out of seeing if I can do it faster next time.

I have always done this. My Mother would buy us "building toys" (not Lego) for Christmas or birthdays and when we had built them and enjoyed them we were told to take them apart, so we could enjoy building them again later. This meant that we ended up with hours of fun all year round, especially school holidays (we didn't have much money so didn't go out much).

My question is; is this weird? He thinks it is.

I think that buying Lego just to build it once and then let it gather dust until you get bored and throw it away is ridiculously wasteful and expensive.

I have been told many times that Lego is so expensive and I am not going to say it isn't. I always thought that yes it is an expensive upfront cost but it is for hours/days/years of fun. I never understood people who complained. Now I'm wondering if most people are like my cousin and just build it once?

AIBU - Lego should be built once.
YANBU - Lego can be built multiple times and is always fun.

It's fine to play with toys in anyway you like as long as it's not hurting another person.
If you want to rebuild it, great. If you want to keep it on display great. How you play with it, makes lots of sense to me - I'd also find more pleasure building it than admiring it on a display.

@Needmorelego

That is fantastic! I love it. How did you even come up with the idea?

Urgh don't tell me your cousin would Kragle it too 😖

😂

Mumski45 · 11/08/2022 15:03

I have DS has a Lego Bugatti Chiron and there is nothing I like better than pulling it apart, sorting out the pieces and putting it back together again. You are not weird at all in my eyes.

My street of modular buildings I have built once, and it stays up all the time. The four Hogwarts sets which make up the castle I put up and take down in bag order, so I can rebuild regularly for the fun of it - I find the building very good and soothing when I’m stressed. I build and take down my Christmas sets and one gorgeous one I have for Chinese New Year at the appropriate times. Everything else is built, admired for a bit and then taken apart to go into general stock for MOCs.

I have only been an AFOL since the start of lockdown but this has made me realise how much I have (and have spent!). Not stopping, though 😁

wonkylegs · 11/08/2022 15:10

We've got loads of sets
One son builds them and then puts them on the shelf,
the other builds them, adds to them, rebuilds adapts and uses his imagination to make all sorts.
He also likes the big boxes of just bits so he can just build.
I love Lego imaginative play but I must admit my Lego Architecture Fallingwater set sits on the shelf in my office built.
I don't think there is just one way to olay with Lego so it's a bit each to their own.

Needmorelego · 11/08/2022 15:11

@TheLibrary I can't quite remember why I decided to turn a dinosaur into a house 🤣
I often just take a couple of sets, empty them out on the table and just see where my creative spark takes me...it often doesn't make much sense. But that's the fun.

@MasterBeth charming !! You sound lovely and 'adult' (not 🙄)

Floralnomad · 11/08/2022 15:33

@MasterBeth who do you think adult Lego is aimed at if not adults

nauticant · 11/08/2022 15:34

The thread was going so well!

TheLibrary · 11/08/2022 15:41

@MasterBeth

I would but it seems so incredibly boring judging by every other threads on this site. Complaining about bills or men or children or bills men and children. I'd rather build Lego thanks all the same.

There's always one twunt who can't help themselves 🙄

gogohmm · 11/08/2022 15:43

Dsd has dismantled hers (space issues) and I put them in the loft. She thinks timing herself on rebuilding is an excellent idea!

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/08/2022 15:44

@MasterBeth how rude! What is the point of your post?

Needmorelego · 11/08/2022 15:45

Everyone ignore Beth who is obviously so sophisticated she only enjoys adult pastimes like wine tasting and discussing politics....
Admire this amazing build I did instead 🤣

@Needmorelego
I have no idea what that is, but it is masterful! Bravo!

Well said, Both!

I'm building one of the camper van sets.

Needmorelego · 11/08/2022 16:00

@TheLibrary I'm not really sure what it is either 🤣

nauticant · 11/08/2022 16:02

The government should include UV warnings in the weather forecasts. It can cause noticeable discolouration of LEGO sets that are left on permanent display.

RuthBrenner · 11/08/2022 16:06

We have a Kallax with glass doors which keep the dust to a minimum. I really want to frame my minifigures at some point, similar to this

All the LEGO fans on here need to get themselves over to Billund and to the Lego House. 26 million bricks to play with - everything from animation studios to robots, cityscapes, LEGO fish that get digitalised and then swim in a hilarious electronic aquarium, and loads more. Recently spent a day there with the grandkids - they enjoyed it but it was actually the adults who had to be dragged out at closing time as they were having such a good time creating stuff.

lifechanginglemoncake · 11/08/2022 16:18

@Havanananana we were meant to go for DH's birthday but then found out we were expecting our second and it all got a bit tricky! Postponed but not forgotten!

Needmorelego · 11/08/2022 16:31

@Havanananana I would love to go to The Lego House.....but I spend all my spare cash (which is not much) on bricks instead.
One day.... maybe.

haggisaggis · 11/08/2022 16:36

@dizzydizzydizzy I'm building one of the VW campers too! The red one. DH got me it for Christmas and just getting around to it now. I would love the Home Alone house but it is so large I suspect that as soon as it was built I'd need to break it down again. I have the Taj Mahal but after keeping it out for a while it's now back in it's box. I have suggested to DH that when ds moves out I could use his room for lego...
