To not understand how some people can be so unaware - fireworks

I don’t often read the local network pages, as mostly they are full of trivia, but a ‘trending’ post today caught my eye.

A woman had posted that she would be having fireworks tomorrow evening for a celebration, and warning people so they could take precautions with animals.

Whilst it is laudable for her to attempt to warn others of noises which might upset children and animals, I can’t understand how anyone can be so unaware of the current fire risk.

We are firmly within the area which has an Amber weather warning for severe heat, we have had no significant rain for weeks, and everyone’s grass is brown, etc.

The post has now been taken down as she was getting a lot of negative comments, but there is no way of knowing if she still intends to go ahead with her plans.

And if the fireworks do go ahead then it’s proof that what folk really want in these situations is a giant echo chamber of “thanks so lovely of you xxx”

I saw someone on Tuesday evening having a barbeque on a parched area of grass. People are just very very stupid.

And then when I was walking back from my local railway station yesterday I saw three people sitting in their stationary cars with their engines running. Again, some people are just stupid and inconsiderate.

Insane. A neighbour of ours started a bonfire last night .... a few other neighbours insisted he put it out immediately with a hose. What is wrong with people!

Yes, I think you’re right that she did expect kudos for letting people know.

I find it hard to believe that she was so oblivious to the risks.

We are in a rural area ( smallish villages and lots of arable farms), so it’s not even like we are in a town with loads of concrete.

I would contact local fire service, they will probably have a word with her.

This just reinforces my view that only selfish fuckwits have their own fireworks displays. Fucking things should be banned from sale to the general public.

I was flicking through the current issue of a magazine a couple of weeks ago - can't remember which, might have been Sainsbury's Mag but can't be sure - and was surprised to see that they had a big feature on 'wild cooking' with recipes for things you can cook in fire pits and portable barbecues while out and about.

I appreciate that the lead-in time for those kinds of magazines is usually a few months in advance, so they wouldn't have known when they planned the feature that we'd be in the middle of a drought this bad, but given that there have been moorland and meadow fires in the UK in a quite a few recent summers even even when the weather hasn't been anything like as dry as this, I was really surprised that they went with the idea.

QueSyrahSyrah · 11/08/2022 12:50

Perhaps she's just inherently daft and it didn't occur to her until people pointed it out. I suppose you'll find out when you see / hear if they go ahead or not.

Snowraingain · 11/08/2022 12:52

My neighbour had a bonfire when it was 40 degrees! It quickly got out of control but luckily his quick thinking OH hose and put it out.
People are stupid.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 11/08/2022 12:55

Hi everyone! Just to let you 'now, I'm about to sit surrounded by sawdust, strike a whole box of matches and one by one throw them into the air so I can see the pretty swirly colours. Might want to keep your pets near you, pack up your most prized possessions, sleep with your clothes on and be ready to evacuate quickly in the event of an uncontrolled fire. Thanks, byeeeeee. Ps, make sure you have your house insurance documents to hand. Keep safe everyone!

People are just too stupid!

I sit in a stationary car with the engine running as otherwise my air con doesn't work Wink

Tonystarksrighthand - ever thought about the planet and the emissions ?

megletthesecond · 11/08/2022 13:22

tony it's illegal to do that. Not ok at all. You just have to get hot.

Essexgalttc · 11/08/2022 13:28

My DH is a pyrotechnic and agrees it is dangerous to even have firework displays in gardens if you don’t know what you’re doing

Let alone do it in this heat

People are silly

stuntbubbles · 11/08/2022 13:34

We’ve heard fireworks in our neighbourhood repeatedly in the past few weeks. The whole terrace is a tinderbox of dry gardens waiting to go up. More and more I’d quite welcome a humanity extinction event, we’re too stupid to live and without us, the planet could repair itself.

Are you me?? 😊

Natsku · 11/08/2022 13:37

I don't understand why its not illegal in weather conditions like that. In my country we have forest fire warnings when its hot and dry, which means you are not allowed to do anything with an open flame that could accidentally spread outside like BBQs (and fireworks are only allowed at new years eve anyway unless you have a special license from the fire brigade so you don't get fuckwits setting off fireworks whenever they want)

This!!!

hollyivysaurus · 11/08/2022 13:49

That’s so stupid! We went for a walk this morning around a big green (more brown currently!) open space nearby and saw a man walking along with a disposable barbecue under his arm. The sooner they ban those, the better!

LumpyandBumps · 11/08/2022 16:03

The woman has responded to another post about her fireworks to say she has found another way to celebrate.
It’s a relief that there won’t be fireworks tomorrow.

Betcha it's a balloon release.

Just hope it's not Chinese Lanterns!

I think you could be right. It’s a gender reveal party, so balloons would work.

I hope not. Those things can be even worse than fireworks.
