Can I wear crocs to drive?

Posting for traffic.

I have a driving lesson tomorrow and I'd usually wear my trainers to be safe, but it's bloody hot and I usually live in crocs (outside of lessons).

I know you shouldn't drive in flip flops, but are crocs safe?? Or shall I stick to trainers?

I know it's a minor problem, but I want to stay safe on the roads.

You can’t drive in flip flops? I’ve just come back from the shop having driven in flip flops.

Believe it or not, you can actually be held responsible if an accident happens and your footwear isn't appropriate. Google it. I think it's quite rare but it's a thing ahah.

switswoo81 · 11/08/2022 08:45

Just asked my dad whose a driving instructor and he said he wouldn't let you have a lesson in either flip flops or Crocs but he informs his students of these things in advance so you would have known already .

I live in crocs and find them fine to drive in and secure on bare feet without the heel straps....slightly less secure when wearing socks but fine with the heel straps up. My wellies are much wider than my crocs and I drive in those too. Do people with wide feet have to slice lumps off them?

XelaM · 11/08/2022 08:50

I've driven to Calais in crocs 😂I love crocs

but that could be shoes other than flip flops eg stilettos, thick platforms etc.

sashagabadon · 11/08/2022 08:54

I wouldn’t, they are not secure on your feet and it’s harder to feel/ control pedals imo and imagine doing an emergency stop in them

MoodyTwo · 11/08/2022 08:57

Wait ... you can't drive in flip flops ??

He never said it was. But it's his car and his livelihood so he can set his own regulations.

houseonthehill · 11/08/2022 09:07

The best advice would be to wear what you usually wear for driving. Then you won't have to make the adjustment, which can feel considerable with changed footwear.

VickyEadieofThigh · 11/08/2022 09:15

The Highway Code has things to say about footwear and it should be noted that the examiner will have his/her own opinion about it (and might judge a candidate for it). This is slightly helpful: www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/uk-news/highway-code-rules-driving-sandals-23712077

I don’t wear Crocs outside of the garden but I wouldn’t want to drive in them.
Just wear your trainers.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/08/2022 09:19

I can only drive in mine if they are in sport mode!

SweatyChamoisPad · 11/08/2022 09:20

I got shunted from the back last year by some bloke in a Merc - he got out to apologise and he was wearing Crocs. He was also driving his brother’s car and wasn’t insured. Luckily no damage done to my bombproof Focus but the front of his brother’s car looked a mess.

I can drive in them but wouldnt. And I say that as someone who wears Crocs all year round.

Allmarbleslost · 11/08/2022 09:21

The best thing to do it to check with your instructor op. I drive everywhere in Birkenstocks in summer but I'm probably not supposed to!

JuneOsborne · 11/08/2022 09:22

In sports mode (straps on the back in place), fine. In fact, it's a good idea to get used to driving in different shoes.

I remember my driving instructor turning the radio on for one of my lessons. I couldn't concentrate. He did because he said you'll pass your test soon and you could have a car full of other teenagers that'll be way more distracting than the radio, so I'm trying to get you used to it.

OliveHenry · 11/08/2022 09:26

Crocs have a sport mode??

Would that help me hang the washing out more quickly? 🤔

cliffdiver · 11/08/2022 09:30

Assuming the car is air conditioned, you won't be hot in the car, so surely you could just wear trainers?

Grimchmas · 11/08/2022 09:34

I've driven in crocs and in flip flops and barefoot too. Doesn't mean any of those things were sensible to do - emphatically, they were not.

(If anybody wants to have a go at me please don't bother. I no longer do any of the above.)

Crocs can slip (even with the heel strap down), move on your foot, and catch the wrong pedals. Particularly as a novice driver, and particularly while you are learning, they are an absolute no no.

It's an hour or two. Wear the trainers. You can always change into them just before and back out of then into something cooler. And you can also tell your driving instructor you are struggling in the heat and can he please stop being a tight arse turn the sodding air conditioner on.

gavisconismyfriend · 11/08/2022 09:57

Why not message your instructor and ask if they allow crocs? Then you’ll know whether you need to take trainers or not.

Retrievemysanity · 11/08/2022 10:06

I wear my crocs to drive. I’ve never noticed them slipping or moving on my feet? They don’t feel any different to my sandals. I wouldn’t drive in flip flops though.

Floralnomad · 11/08/2022 10:12

I drive in whatever I have on my feet at the time , last winter I went out twice in my slipper boots and arrived at my destination before I noticed .

Sonnex · 11/08/2022 10:19

I think it's fine to drive in whatever your normal footwear is once you're an experienced driver (I often drive short distances in flip flops even thoughbits apparently an insane idea, automatic) but I wouldn't as a learner I have to say. I'd wear the same pair of trainers every lesson and on the test.

OfficiallyBroken · 11/08/2022 10:35

Crocs are too clunky to be considered safe driving shoes.

I witnessed a car running into a cyclist so ended up being involved when it went to court. One of the charges included against the driver was not wearing appropriate footwear...they were crocs. If you're in an accident the police can rightly claim they aren't appropriate footwear because of the width on them.

I'd be surprised if a driver instructor was happy with you wearing them.
