Choosing not to go abroad even if you can afford it?

girlfriend44 · 10/08/2022 21:43

The cost of going abroad has shot up. There's no cheap deals anymore.
If I book now it will be the most I've ever seen it cost even in November and December when it's generally abit cheaper.
Thinking of leaving it. Not sure I want to pay that on a week's break.
Anyone else feel the same?
Can you afford it but don't want to pay the current prices?
Or dosent it bother you if I can afford it I will go?

I can't face going to France or Spain because of heat wave.

We have pots of money spare but choose to go on holiday to a British coastal location we love. It's beautiful, our kids are happy there.

Me too - and cheap flights are not good for the planet.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 10/08/2022 23:26

We can afford it, but can't be arsed with the airports this year.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 10/08/2022 23:27

Between covid uncertainty, one DC (then) not being vaccinated, and our local airport being completely broken at the point when we were booking a holiday, we decided we CBA with going overseas this year. We spent some of the cost savings on an extra-nice cottage.

We're away now and have had enormous luck with the weather, so TBH it feels like the best of both worlds. Could have been a washout though!

Have spent today looking for a cheap break mid September in uk v staying in the most idyllic place in Majorca that I stayed at many years ago when the children were young…Majorca is where we are going !!

LittleGreenBeetle · 10/08/2022 23:39

To be honest, I often find a UK break more interesting / relaxing anyway, though concede that if you just want guaranteed sunshine and / or to snooze on a beach, abroad is probably a better bet.

No hassle with currency, insurance, phones etc all makes for less planning - plus I enjoy heritage-type attractions and if they're presented in English, I can get more understanding from them - and I like that I can get in my car and drive most places within 5 hours without having to rely on other transport and similarly get home easily if there is a problem at home (elderly dependents).

This is us. We will travel abroad again eventually. But at the moment the risk of huge queues at airports, lost luggage and cancelled flights means its a no go for our family. We spent our money this summer on a stress free and very relaxing beach holiday in Devon. Its just as well we stayed relatively local because as it turned out I was recovering from a covid infection the week before and no way would I have wanted to travel overseas.

I choose not to go abroad frequently due to not wanting to fly for environmental reasons.

I choose to take the train ... Channel Tunnel anyone?
Honestly OP: do what you like. Just so long as no one's trying to claim some kind of moral high ground for their choice

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/08/2022 23:45

@Toosadtocomprehend

Would that be Mallorca?

As a faily we chose not to go abroad this year,The reason for this is not the money its the airports the lack of staff, cancelled flights, queues and missing luggage! The stress is so not worth it to me. Mind you having said that what I have paid to stay in this country is fking scandalous and we could have easily gone all inclusive abroad for the same cost..

We're generally going to do day trips for the next few years, and have some really good days out

LordEmsworth · 11/08/2022 10:27

When did it become a requirement that you have to go abroad?

I mean, nothing wrong with going abroad. But nothing wrong with not going abroad either. A lot of judgement on here about the worthiness in "travelling" (and small mindedness about people who choose not to or cannot afford to go to another country)

UseOfWeapons · 11/08/2022 11:08

I choose not to fly for environmental reasons, but there are lots of other reasons why I prefer to stay in the UK. Haven’t been overseas now for 14 years. Some of that is to do with the care I need to give to my parents.
Each to their own, I think.
However, I do resent the attitude of some of my colleagues who think that staying in the UK is boring, and I am to be pitied. I’m doing what I want, they’re doing what they want, so I’m unsure where the pity comes from.

stevalnamechanger · 11/08/2022 13:56

I just booked a flight to France for £1 due to miles and points and staying in a cheapo Airbnb to go to the beach next year .

If you have ways of building up points ( all spending goes on reward card - balance cannot be left in it month to month ) you can get some very good perks / benefits

But I appreciate not accessible to all !
