Choosing not to go abroad even if you can afford it?

girlfriend44 · 10/08/2022 21:43

The cost of going abroad has shot up. There's no cheap deals anymore.
If I book now it will be the most I've ever seen it cost even in November and December when it's generally abit cheaper.
Thinking of leaving it. Not sure I want to pay that on a week's break.
Anyone else feel the same?
Can you afford it but don't want to pay the current prices?
Or dosent it bother you if I can afford it I will go?

Totally depends where you go? "Go abroad" can mean so many things.

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/08/2022 21:50

Same. I went abroad much earlier this year (Feb & Mar) on trips I'd booked last year (so prices were low as Covid restrictions were still in place in many places) so I got a travel fix - and had a marvellous time as places were still much quieter than usual.

Now prices are through the roof, I'm staying home and hoping things settle down by next summer. Flight prices are sky high and I'm just not willing to pay that those crazy prices as I just don't think it's worth it.

That's what I mean. Used to be able to go to the Canaries in December for example cheaply but not anymore.

I choose not to go abroad frequently due to not wanting to fly for environmental reasons.

Same here.

We also have a very low holiday budget because we spend the money on other things these days.

giffyg · 10/08/2022 21:57

yep didn't bother this summer and booked luxury stay in the U.K. & had fab weather. Cant be bothered with the flying agg at the moment.

yonce · 10/08/2022 22:00

Hmmm kind of, we've had a few staycations (although not much cheaper than a European jaunt!) but even though it's extortionate - we've paid a small fortune for our upcoming USA holiday (and it's our third in 9 months), we have the view of we can earn the money back but not the time. After two years of no holidays due to covid, we're making up for lost time!

SpudsIluv · 10/08/2022 22:01

I've just paid £400 for 5 nights all inclusive in Greece 🇬🇷 early October....I think that's an ok deal.

gunnersgold · 10/08/2022 22:02

Yes ! We can afford but I couldn't be bothered this year ! Covid has put me off with all the drama of big queues and cancellations. We have stayed at home this year !

Smellywellyhoo · 10/08/2022 22:03

I still find the U.K. very expensive- not much difference.

WTF475878237NC · 10/08/2022 22:07

We fly once every five years for environmental reasons. We have family abroad otherwise probably would stop altogether.

InChocolateWeTrust · 10/08/2022 22:25

We have pots of money spare but choose to go on holiday to a British coastal location we love. It's beautiful, our kids are happy there.

Same. We did go this year but will probably only fly once every 3-4 years from now, if that. (We have relatives abroad in places you can't get to by other means.)

NewMoney1000000 · 10/08/2022 22:34

I’ve found term time foreign holidays reasonable.

Itssolate · 10/08/2022 22:38

I could afford it but can't be bothered with the hassle.

ellieboolou · 10/08/2022 22:43

I've just booked a holiday abroad for next year, first in 7 years. To stay in Norfolk in a lodge in a good resort was coming up at £1900! Cost us £1350 for caravan in Norfolk last year!

I got 10 days half board 4 star hotel in Tenerife 2 adults 2 kids for £2.5k - thought that was quite reasonable

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 10/08/2022 22:52

If I can afford it I am willing to pay high prices. Both as an adult and child I have amazing memories of our family holidays and have seen some beautiful parts of the world. Prices are ridiculous but I am happy to cut back on other things for my holidays. I believe it’s absolutely worth it.

Louise0701 · 10/08/2022 22:55

@Motheranddaughtertotwo agree they’re completely worth it. We’ve travelled all over with our children and will continue to do so. Holidays are so important to us. Thankfully not affected by any price rises for now but should we in the future, we will prioritise holidays.

JasmineVioletRose · 10/08/2022 22:56

Honestly? I've just spent way more on a uk break for a week
Than am Spending on a European trip later this month. Shop around!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 10/08/2022 22:58

We got 7nights in corfu all inclusive for £1800 2 adults and one child. Thought that was ok. Not been yet though so hotel might be crap lol

mondaytosunday · 10/08/2022 23:13

All the chaos at the airports and we're just going on a mini cruise out of Southampton this year. Next year Spain and the States, but it's all too much this year.

Decidualcast · 10/08/2022 23:13

Really couldn’t be arsed with travel this summer but had to use up my Eurostar points and bagged two return tickets for DS and myself at 0 cost. We will spend a couple of nights in Paris and take a low cost train south. Eurostar has a 39 quid promo at the mo. You could have a nice holiday in France cheaply.

Behappyplease · 10/08/2022 23:14

I have chosen not to go a abroad this year but it is not a money issue. We went away in October and all the covid stuff spoilt the holiday. I know it has all changed now but having seen all the disruption with the airlines I just want hassle free. Plus, there are loads of places I want to see in the UK so happy to spend my money here.
