Dog killed a rat

Does he need the vet?

He's a 14 he old jack Russell x corgi and barely moves these days. He just legged it into the garden and dispatched it very quickly then he did try and bring it in the house but I shut the door in him. He didn't eat it. Just killed it, carried it around and then dropped it. It's now in the bin.

3 yr old border terrier did not help him. He pushed her out the way and he was so fast. I think it was dying anyway but he definitely helped it on its way.

Ugh. It's because next door have had pest control out.

Does he need the vet tomorrow?

Good dog!

GeriSignfeld · 11/08/2022 06:09

This is what Jack Russell's live for!

Shows he can still move when he wants to.

He must be strutting around quite proud of himself now.

If he had eaten the rat I'd be worried about poisoning, but with JRs they usually just snap the neck & leave it at that.

This is why you can't have JRs in the house with small mammals - the instinct to dispatch a rate is simply too strong for them.

Have 2 JRTs and they are feeling quite envious of yours right now.

If you want to see a crazy video of JRs hunting rats check out "Jack Russells killing rats" featuring Martin Clunes on YouTube:

The rat didn't bite him and he didn't eat it.

Then he shouldn’t need a vet.

TenoringBehind · 11/08/2022 06:24

Fantastic! One less rat.

He’ll be fine.

Svara · 11/08/2022 06:40

If I took my cat to the vet for every rat I'd be broke!

Aprilx · 11/08/2022 06:49

I have seen advice that you should take your pet to the vet if they eat a rat or mouse that has been poisoned by pest control. As yours did not eat it, no need for vet.

My dog ate a mangy half rabbit once, I was sure he would be violently ill. Nope didn’t upset his digestive system even slightly!

Ooo I want a Jack Russell now! Smile

I've been looking at a small breed to get. Something good with children (DS is disabled). I'm thinking your dog would be a good fit OP if it also kills spiders! I'm terrified of them

I wouldn't get a Jack Russell with children. Some are OK but 95% of the ones I know are nasty little fuckers including the one living next door to me.

liveforsummer · 11/08/2022 07:25

I've got a Jack Russell. They are very loyal dogs so mine is amazing with MY dc. I have to be so vigilant though because she's cute l, kids out and about always want to stroke her and I say no. I just don't trust her 100% but sometimes they'll appear from behind etc or ignore you when you say no

GeriSignfeld · 11/08/2022 07:35

@AmberGer dogs become snappy towards kids when people have allowed their children to terrorise them.

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 11/08/2022 07:40

What a good boy bet he is thrilled with himself! My nob head lurcher once killed a massive rat on a walk and had it half way down his throat, trying to swallow it whole.

lljkk · 11/08/2022 07:56

My cat kills rats AND spiders.
All that was left of the rabbits was the feet.

Igmum · 11/08/2022 08:06

My sister had a mongrel who was part terrier and she used to lend him to farming friends to sort out their rats. Don't worry OP. This is what terriers do. Bet he is delighted with himself now Grin

HuffleWoof · 12/08/2022 23:09

@AmberGer he's really good with kids.

Floralnomad · 12/08/2022 23:21

Very mean of you to put his kill straight in the bin @HuffleWoof , he probably wanted to show it to everyone he knows.

BMW6 · 12/08/2022 23:25

My terrier boy (13) has killed 5 rats, 6 mice (tricky, too small to get a grip for the death shake) and 2 pigeons.

Love it when he kills a rat - after death (split second, no suffering) hw picks up the corpse in his mouth and throws it on the ground, as if to challenge. Always looks very disappointed when it doesn't fight back 😏

HuffleWoof · 12/08/2022 23:29

@Floralnomad oh yes! He was desperate to bring it inside the house! Ugh

MissMaple82 · 12/08/2022 23:31

No, some dogs go ratting all the time.

Elphame · 12/08/2022 23:37

He'll be very pleased with himself!

My 4yr old Welshie brought me a pigeon the other day. He let go to drop it at my feet and it flew off completely unharmed. He's better with rats!

HRTQueen · 12/08/2022 23:51

Good the less rats about the better

I saw this happen at the park once the jack russell was so quick

my cat once killed a rat and bought it home (cat flap was firmly locked after) he was so proud of himself. The mice he used to bring in were mostly alive. He is still a master at killing spiders and shall be 19 soon

LadyTRH · 13/08/2022 00:06

Good lad. My childhood dog was a jack corgi cross and she killed lots of rats. Dispatched them quickly and never a problem.

BattenburgSlice · 13/08/2022 00:08

Terriers are ratters and prey driven.

DramaAlpaca · 13/08/2022 00:20

I watched one of my springers corner, catch and dispatch a rat in our garden once. I couldn't believe my eyes. That spaniel was the gentlest dog I've ever met, yet confronted with a rat all her instincts came to the fore. I'll say one thing, it was very quick and efficient.

HuffleWoof · 13/08/2022 01:38

It was extremely quick I'll give him that. It just made me laugh that the dog that we bought from a farmer and we give her back every year to clear out the rats from his barn did absolutely f all apart from get her fave toy and squeak that. However thinking about it, it was definitely on its way out so maybe she could smell that?

This is him incase anyone wanted to see the hero 😂

My inlaws have 3 JRT's, next door had a rat problem, so borrowed the dogs. The young male and middle female just stood and did nothing, so got passed back over the wall for being useless Grin it was the lovely old lady thats the ratter in that family and she relished it, very efficient. As a rodent lover myself i'm just glad i didnt witness it.

HuffleWoof · 13/08/2022 01:58

@AlmostAJillSandwich hah I love the mental image of just passing small with dogs over the fence nope this one is shit 😂

I like rats (domesticated clean ones) but I didn't feel bad for it. It was dying already, he just helped it along a lot
