Dog killed a rat

Does he need the vet?

He's a 14 he old jack Russell x corgi and barely moves these days. He just legged it into the garden and dispatched it very quickly then he did try and bring it in the house but I shut the door in him. He didn't eat it. Just killed it, carried it around and then dropped it. It's now in the bin.

3 yr old border terrier did not help him. He pushed her out the way and he was so fast. I think it was dying anyway but he definitely helped it on its way.

Ugh. It's because next door have had pest control out.

Does he need the vet tomorrow?

No, almost certainly not

CrotchetyQuaver · 10/08/2022 18:35

I wouldn't have thought so unless it it him but doesn't sound like it had time to. If it was mine, I'd keep an eye on him and phone them if I was worried. I bet the old boys feeling very pleased with himself!

HuffleWoof · 10/08/2022 18:35

@MammaWeasel thanks! I'm just so shocked he
A managed to catch it
And B killed it so fast!

@CrotchetyQuaver he's so happy with himself 😂

It's the Jack Russell in him! Pure instinct!

LakieLady · 10/08/2022 18:39

No, he should be fine.

I used to have lakeland terriers and when we had a rat problem in the area, she would despatch a couple most weeks and leave the corpses on the lawn. It never led to any problems.

tenbob · 10/08/2022 18:39

Unless he was visibly bitten or ate the carcass, I wouldn’t take him to the vet

i would tell him what a good boy he is though. He must be over the moon that the old boy has still got some moves!

Ohtoberoavingagain · 10/08/2022 18:41

I thought you meant a vet for the rat! Nope, he’s beyond that.
Got to live a Terrier, they’ll kill anything small that moves. And I’m not surprised he’s pleased with himself, he’ll be dreaming of that moment for months.

Bubblebubblebah · 10/08/2022 18:41

Are you worried about poison in the rat? Unless he actually eat the rat (and the rat eat it) he eill be fine.

Any chance they'll kill spiders?

Dotcheck · 10/08/2022 18:43

If pest control have been out, I’d be worried they had laid poison

Our lakeland did

liveforsummer · 10/08/2022 18:45

No he's just fulfilling his calling. As long as the rat didn't bite him.

HuffleWoof · 10/08/2022 18:45

@shewhocares he does eat spiders, he tries to catch flies but he's not fast enough so just gets increasingly angry at them 😂

Any chance they'll kill spiders?

Yes, mine is good at catching pesky blue bottle flies too

shewhocares · 10/08/2022 18:47

Ooo I want a Jack Russell now! Smile

I've been looking at a small breed to get. Something good with children (DS is disabled). I'm thinking your dog would be a good fit OP if it also kills spiders! I'm terrified of them

HuffleWoof · 10/08/2022 18:47

The rat didn't bite him and he didn't eat it. He just carried it around a bit and then dropped it on the floor outside when I wouldn't let him bring it inside . He didn't do anything other than catch it, shake it and then carry it around. He's a very good boy

crosstalk · 10/08/2022 18:48

Well done that terrier! What joy for him.

AffIt · 10/08/2022 18:49

Old boy got moves!

Nah, he'll be fine, assuming he wasn't bitten or ate anything.

It's what they're literally bred to do.

PritiPatelsMaker · 10/08/2022 18:50

He'll be having happy dreams tonight Wink

toomuchlaundry · 10/08/2022 18:51

Can we borrow him, our garden seems to be a rat run?

HuffleWoof · 10/08/2022 19:00

@toomuchlaundry sure 😂 he's found his calling now at 14. Bless him

Haphazardhacker · 11/08/2022 05:20

Good lad 😀

Ilovecheesetoasties · 11/08/2022 05:50

Terriers are amazing. Instinct takes over then the brain catches up. The first time ours killed a rat he was over the moon with himself even though it bit him.

No vet required unless he got bitten or you think it was poisoned and he ate some.

Well done your dog!

fugly1 · 11/08/2022 06:02

No, but the rat does Smile
