To be freaked out about manifestation

joggiegrey · 09/08/2022 16:00

Exactly as title says. 3 days ago, I was discussing someone I've not been on good terms with for a year or so.

An hour ago, they just attempted to follow me on social media. We have no mutuals. So no way we have any connection.

This happened to me last year with someone I knew 5 years ago and hadn't spoke to, and 10 mins later they texted me.

This terrifies me because what if my thoughts do manifest? And it's that law of attraction bollocks? I get so many negative thoughts, I really don't want it to happen

Aye. And how many times have you thought of something or someone and it not happening.
I’m now manifesting finding £20 on my walk home. Will update 🤣

I've been manifesting shagging Cillian Murphy for years and annoyingly it still hasn't happened!

hotfroth · 09/08/2022 16:43

About a week ago I was driving home from work thinking that I'd really enjoyed watching the development of the Iceland volcano last year, and all the youtube clips. I wondered if another one might erupt soon.

24 hours later - Hey presto.

@CreateIn there’s a horror film plot in that somewhere 🤣

I’d say you’ve got a mix there. Coincidence. Possibly not noticing others who have left because they don’t register with you - none of the others? But very likely, people that are hard work for you are hard work for others. So don’t develop the same enjoyment or loyalty to a job, or see the same opportunities because the managers also dislike them, or are the type to take offence at slight things. Underlying characteristics that drive both your feelings about them and their tendency towards fast turnover. I see it in my cousin’s tales of the shop where she works. Arsey types, who make others miserable then move on at some imagined slight.

🤣 a horror where the bodies are under my patio!

It is a job with a higher than average turnover, and these 5 people I particularly took notice of because I found them hard work. 3 transferred to another department, 1 was sacked and 1 just left, no notice or anything.

There was one other colleague that left for a new job, and I was gutted - she was amazing to work with. I thought about how much she'd miss the team. She came back 2 weeks later!

I know it's as you say, a mix of circumstances, but it makes me laugh to think I'm somehow playing God with an entire workforce 🤣

If you'd heard of synchronicity first, you wouldn't be concerned about manifestation.
www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/synchronicity

Always knew it as a word, but never ever read the second definition. You're absolutely correct. So people are basically profiting on manifestation (coaches, The Secret, gurus etc) when it's synchronicity?

Now there’s a coincidence! I rarely watch films or TV and my friends think I’m weird because I always look blank when they mention actors (I’m much better than them on Rock Stars though 😊)

This morning I needed a distraction so I had a look at Prime and decided to watch Sunshine….first time I’d heard of Cillian Murphy!

I really get where you’re coming from there SunflowerGardens 😃👍

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 09/08/2022 17:23

Think of all the times you have thought about different people and they haven't been in touch. The fact that on rare occasions that they do, doesn't make it supernatural, it's just life and coincidence.

christmastreewithhairyfairy · 09/08/2022 17:28

MarshaMelrose · 09/08/2022 16:38

I bet there have been times when you've thought of friends from the past and they've never contacted you but you don't remember those. You only remember the times when they did. One of MN favourite sayings is trust your gut, it's never wrong. But that is so untrue. Lots of time people will think things that ultimately turn out to be rubbish, but they never remember those, they just remember when their gut led them to a decision which turned out to be a good one.
That's why we're so bad at judging risk because we are so selective with our memories.

This. It's an example of confirmation bias. Manifestation is not a thing

Sandinmyknickers · 09/08/2022 17:30

If coincidences didn't exist there wouldn't be a word for them

Sally090807 · 09/08/2022 17:30

I don’t think posters need to mock, there’s many that do believe.

I’ll mock away at a belief system which holds that children with terminal cancer, or people dying of starvation in Yemen, have manifested their fate through their thoughts.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 09/08/2022 17:49

Can’t give examples as identifying but I do believe in it

Identifying Grin sure sure.

It’s confirmation bias and coincidence.

Im talking about spiritual manifestations, I’m not sure what you’re on about,

donttalkaboutbookclub · 09/08/2022 17:51

I actually love coincidences - they are sufficiently amazing for me to be quite satisfied!

KettrickenSmiled · 09/08/2022 18:00

Don't be daft OP - simple coincidence is not "manifestation", because manifestation is bullshit peddled by people who want your money for their 'special insight'.

Do you worry about all the thousands of times you have thought about somebody & they have NOT called you or come up in conversation immediately afterwards?
No?
There you go then.

I have really super-duper advanced manifesting skillz @SunflowerGardens, & used your energy to divert Cillian to my gaff. So cheers for that, all very satisfactory 😁

@CreateIn if you work in HR I am truly spooked by your powers. You are like some evil downsizing genius.

Lunalae · 09/08/2022 18:06

Yes, you're a wizard.

I don't think posters need to believe, there's many that do mock.

Because it is superstitious nonsense, lazy thinking, & signing away one's own agency to believe this codswallop.

nottalot · 09/08/2022 18:09

Something has happened that's unconsciously reminded you both of each other. That's all.

HangOnToYourself · 09/08/2022 18:16

I was desperately wishing I could work from home more often then covid happened. I dont think it means I have magic powers tho.

No-one can manifest, otherwise the same people would be winning all the lotteries etc.
Anytime you get a thought like this, instead of letting it run away with your imagination, flip it & think why it coudn't be true.

joggiegrey · 09/08/2022 19:54

Thanks guys. I was freaking out so much.

OP posts:
orbitalcrisis · 09/08/2022 21:43

If you really had the power to manifest, why is it that's it's just random little things that happen rather than the things you spend hours or even days thinking about and wishing would really happen that suddenly occur?

Humans are pattern seeking animals, we attempt to find order in chaos. It's human nature. There is no supernatural by definition.

Tell me it's the school holidays without actually telling me it's the school holidays...

Teens are really into the manifestation nonsense at the moment 😅

Thatswhyimacat · 09/08/2022 22:34

My whole life I've had an irrational fear that my thoughts can affect the outside world.

I was then diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder, of which magical thinking is a symptom.
