I've just been reduced to a puddle by the bit in Hunger Games where Katniss volunteers for Prim - you can feel both their panic for each other and it just gets me! gulp Reminds me of the bit in Empire of the Sun when Jamie is separated from his parents in the mob 😭 I feel like this sort of scene hits me harder since having my kids.

Call me bonkers but i love a good film cry, I find it really cathartic. So hit me! Any scene from any film that makes you ugly cry :)

Yes to all of these!

But there's also 2 comedies that unintentionally make me cry, both because of little kids.

Big Daddy- when the social worker is dragging Julian away and he's begging Sonny to let him stay, and he says "I won't play the kangaroo song anymore!"

Daddy Day Care- when Charlie tells Ben that if he goes back to work he can buy him toys, and Ben says he'll sell all his toys. Charlie asks why he would do that, and Ben says "If I don't have toys, then we don't need money, and you can stay with me."

Welling up just thinking of these! 😂

Jojo Rabbit...where he sees the Butterfly and follows it and all seems lovely. Till he sees his mums shoes..and not being able to tie the laces! And the ending where they dance.

Ending of a Monster Calls..'in doing so he can let her go'😭

WolverineBluey · 09/08/2022 19:18

Les Mis, basically from start to finish - somehow never gets a mention on these types of threads!

Dick Van Dyke singing Hushabye Mountain in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I well up every time no idea why must have seen it a billion times. And Feed the Bloody Birds in Mary Poppins 😭

Ahh yes me too!!

hookiewookie29 · 09/08/2022 19:25

When ET goes home.....

VickerishAllsort · 09/08/2022 19:42

Adam Cooper's leap onto the stage at the end of Billy Elliott. God, I'm welling up just thinking about it.

In cloud atlas when he is going to fight against slavery and they say you'll just be a drop in the ocean and he replies 'what is an ocean but a multitude of drops?'
In Before Sunset when she says has a breakdown in the taxi - totally my.life.

ReadtheReviews · 09/08/2022 19:58

Oh god and Okja in the slaughterhouse. Because slaughterhouses really are worse.

Oh God, me too 😥

TowelChair · 09/08/2022 20:01

Marley and Me 😭 I was sat next to my friend on a plane and she was about 20 mins ahead with the film. I thought it was funny she was crying…till I started sobbing too 🤦🏼‍♀️

ReadtheReviews · 09/08/2022 20:28

Reminds me of that comedy skit of Hitler fast forwarding the X Factor because he 'just vants to vatch the veeping'.

@SteveHarringtonsChestHair

Haha! I can definitely do similar re sadness. The DC roll their eyes at this point!

EarringsandLipstick · 09/08/2022 20:33

"It's all right, children. Life is made up of meetings and partings." Gaaaaah.

Oh yes! Agree completely.

EarringsandLipstick · 09/08/2022 20:36

This is not a movie, and will sound banal, but a scene that always gets to me is the episode in Friends when Ross is about to take Rachel to the prom & then Chip shows up ... Jack is filming & captures Rosses woebegone face.

Even tho nothing is directly relatable to my own life (Proms, boyfriends called Chip, people with video recorders!) I identify so much with that embarrassment, feeling left out & unseen as a teenager.

(In Friends it's all lovely as when Rachel realises, she rushes to Ross & it's all good but still ...)

I came on to say the whole of Lion too. Especially the real bits at the end. Amazing film.

For me it was Incendiary. it absolutely broke me.

I made the mistake of watching Lion on my own in the cinema, 2 weeks postnatal with my baby boy in a sling. I was in that elated stage of new motherhood and would cry with happiness at random times! Not the best time to watch a sad film where a little boy goes missing from his mum. I cried so hard that someone got the usher to come in and shush me Blush

So many make me cry but I automatically thought of when Mrs Jumbo rocks Dumbo through the bars of her cage whilst baby mine is
being sung.

I’m crying now!

I actually can’t watch this

feelingpantstoday · 09/08/2022 20:48

Yondu: “He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn’t your daddy.”

Every time .......😭

Shiloh139 · 09/08/2022 20:48

I ugly-cry at so many films but those that immediately jump to mind include Sally Field's performance at the funeral, ET when he and Elliott are in the tent dying, Rue's flower scene in the Hunger Games and the haunting image of a deflated yellow sunbed streaked with blood in Jaws. Moments before you see the sunbed, a young kid has asked if he can go back in the sea and his mum allows him just 5 more minutes and then they're going home. The shark arrives, mass panic on the beach and when everyone is out of the water the mum is still screaming her son's name and you just see the sunbed. Utterly heartbreaking every time and now I'm ugly crying!

VeggieSausage · 09/08/2022 20:50

The Choir, a French film about a teacher - when he is leaving the school and all of the boys throw paper aeroplanes out of the window with notes for him.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 09/08/2022 20:51

The Green Mile. When John Coffey is being strapped into the electric chair and the young guard is wiping away his tears because he knows John is innocent, as do all the guards. They just have to do the job at hand, so awful.

Lightningrain · 09/08/2022 20:52

Mine have already been mentioned - Marley and Me, ET, Homeward Bound Dobby dying in Hardy Potter, Beaches, I Am Legend.

Anything sad involving dogs and I’m a mess. I never used to cry at films until I got to my mid twenties.

GrouchyKiwi · 09/08/2022 20:54

Moana where she sings to TeFiti: "This is not who you are, you know who you are" and then they hongi, and it so beautiful I cry every time.

Ceebeegee · 09/08/2022 20:56

The ending of the Iron Giant.

The scene in Sarah's Key when she realises...you know what.

There's a Stephen merchant film I can't remember the title of where they're trying to find a popular toy for their kids Christmas present and they break into another kids home to steal it, but they realise this kid is actually seriously ill, to the sound of "I believe in father Christmas" by Greg Lake , and the decide to leave the toy there for the poorly child. I burst into proper tears !

The scene in the day after tomorrow where the doctor is looking after the child with cancer. Where she's reading to him, thinking they're going to die. But then they get rescued . Blub fest .

Many, many scenes in The Pianist. Especially when he says to his sister when they're heading towards the train, that he wishes he had got to know her better.

The scene in braveheart when he sees his wife in the crowd.

Newyearnewname20 · 09/08/2022 21:06

The bit in The Sound of Music when the Von Trapp kids are singing to the Baroness and the gruff old Captain (swoon) suddenly walks in and joins in, then hugs his kids 😫gets me every time.

Howlongwillthistake · 09/08/2022 21:14

The very end of Shawshank Redemption when Red is walking along the beach

The very end of Stand By Me and the words by Richard Dreyfuss talking about how and where they all ended up. I actually sobbed for the loss of my childhood and happy carefree days.
