To assume my holiday is a write off

i appreciate this is a first world problem but I’m extremely stressed and upset. Set to go on holiday to Spain next Tuesday, my first since covid.
Yesterday it was confirmed my 5year old has chicken pox (despite having had it just before she turned 2 so wtf are the chances on this?!!) and my 21 month old has hand foot and mouth.
Now they both have time to get over their illnesses but surely they will pass it to eachother.

I don’t know what’s worse to have to cancel my holiday or worse they both recover, I can’t cancel and I go away feeling like my youngest is a ticking time bomb and next wk whilst away she’ll get chicken pox.
There’s nothing I can do so I’m not sure why I’m writing but to have a moan, for strangers to tell me stories where one sibling didn’t catch it from the other- any suggestions as to wtf I do if they are both well on our departure date, just hope my youngest isn’t incubating chickenpox?!

Oh that’s super shit!

Roselilly36 · 09/08/2022 08:08

So sorry OP, how disappointing, claim on your insurance and then re book. You will still get your holiday just a bit later on Flowers

justasking111 · 09/08/2022 08:08

Neighbouring villa the baby had chicken pox, that was tough they never went out. They had driven from England to Portugal as well.

I don't know what to suggest except claim back on insurance

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/08/2022 08:11

Can I claim on insurance now?
i could try and push it out, but school starts again on the 1st- so I’d have to leave on the 24th could my youngest be in the clear by that point?

I think I would be inclined to do this too. No point being stuck in a hotel room with two unwell children. You can always try again next half term, or even see if you can get a last minute deal at the end of the month?

The3Ls · 09/08/2022 08:13

If you first child is recovered and your second doesn't have it yet I'm not sure the insurance will payout.

In good news one yes mine didn't catch it from their siblings. And we did nothing to separate them.

And two both mine got it mildly so not great on holiday but with three days scabbed over so wouldn't ruin n whole week

Its rubbish especially after we ve all copies with so much covid cancelling x

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/08/2022 08:13

Yes a package with Tui

That’s the thing- if my youngest has it before Monday fine I can push it or claim it, it’s the unknown that makes me scared to get on a plane

My two and half year old had chicken pox just before we due to fly out to Caribbean. Got over it in time to fly. Hoped baby would have some immunity as still breastfeeding. Got out there for 2 weeks. Baby got it 3 days before return. Was covered in spots. Insurance paid for one of us to stay- but resort wouldn’t let baby leave the room even to go to out door spaces.I think They vaccinate routinely over there and were pretty freaked out by him. Wish I hadn’t risked it.

Icannever · 09/08/2022 08:53

You can get your youngest child vaccinated now and it will still help them to either not catch it or to get it more mildly at least.
You just make an appointment at the chemists and pay for it. We did this when my oldest caught it before a holiday and the youngest never had a single spot 😊

Not enough time- it’s two injections 4 wks apart minimum

As it’s an infectious disease, airlines are surprisingly generous in their flexibility with chicken pox (we were able to change the return date for our group of 6 without charge). But as PP said, your travel insurance will only cover the accommodation cost of the sick child and 1 parent to stay on until they are fit to fly. Sorry OP, that’s a tough break.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/08/2022 09:01

I’m thinking if I move my holiday to the 24th would that be enough time to know if my youngest was going to get it?

OP posts:
Emelene · 09/08/2022 09:09

I think there is some evidence that even the first vaccine can help so I would look into that.

JingsMahBucket · 09/08/2022 09:15

@OnlyFoolsnMothers the first vaccine covers you about 90% and has been proven to dramatically reduce the odds of contagion. Just get the second when you return from vacation.

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 09/08/2022 09:30

To claim on insurance you need a doctor to say that someone isn’t fit to travel. Chicken pox is that reason. I would get a doctors appointment and call your holiday provider.

bumbledeedum · 09/08/2022 11:16

The first vaccine can still stop you picking it up even after exposure (if you act quickly) but there's a national vaccine shortage atm so you're likely to struggle to find any. Still worth checking out in your local area though

OhPleaseJustLast · 09/08/2022 11:41

Your first is likely to have it mildly I would think and will very probably be clear by next week. As to their sibling though…I’d suggest trying to reschedule if you can. I had chickenpox in Spain as a child (first spot came out on the journey) and it was utterly utterly shit. Sorry OP 😞

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 09/08/2022 12:46

Are you sure they don't both have the same thing? They're very hard to tell apart.

liveforsummer · 09/08/2022 12:56

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername I was wondering the same and even gp's can be a bit unsure when diagnosing

balalake · 09/08/2022 13:05

I think you should assume no holiday, disappointing as that is, and look as to how you can get money back from insurance. So contact your GP.

CrossStitch87 · 09/08/2022 13:08

My youngest had HFM and the doctor didn’t know whether it was chicken pox or HFM. I only think it was HFM now because she has since had chicken pox with no lesions around her mouth

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/08/2022 13:17

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 09/08/2022 12:46

Are you sure they don't both have the same thing? They're very hard to tell apart.

No youngest only has spots on her feet and hands, more blister like and in clusters. Eldests spots started on torso and back and has now spread to her face and arms- nothing on her feet or hands.
