We have a freezer full of ice lollies, DH says I’m letting the kids have too many but I disagree, I think they could have more than they’ve had already in one day tbh, they’ve only had 2 each!

What rank is he in the “fun police” ?

And @SanFranBear , he says we can’t have them incase they make a mess, he says they are messy! I don’t agree with him tbh x

Is he always so controlling?!

Ice lollies/ice pops are just frozen squash really, aren't they?

How many glasses of cold squash do you allow your children on a hot day? Surely they can substitute frozen squash for cold squash as often as they like. (But personally I'd probably freeze them myself rather than buying in loads of premade ones). I'd allow them unlimited or as quick as I could refill and freeze the moulds.

Proper ice creams (magnum/cornetto etc) I'd probably only buy enough for a couple a week each.

They can have quite a bit of cold squash, we are freezing and making our own ice lollies too as well as buying them from the shop x

You don’t have an ice pop problem, you have a DH problem.

missverstaendnis · 08/08/2022 20:24

during hot days I stock up freezer on ice pops and lollies and tell them they can help themselves, they never seem to have more than two a day. Same with frozen and fresh fruits to make smoothies.
I think depends on the age, they gravitate towards drinking plenty of water as well (12&13 years old). I really don't mind as long as they a balanced lunch and dinner, everything in measures I suppose and after all it's summer holidays so let them have a few ice loliies to cool down, it's only a few weeks a year!

Skyeheather · 08/08/2022 20:26

Ice pops they can two (it's just a frozen drink really), Mini milks are only about 50 calories. They can only have one ice cream based item and one full size frozen lolly a day.

Sit the kids outside in the shade and any mess stays outside surely? Mine can be messy with ice pops because they squeeze them too hard and the juice comes out but they're equally messy with any lolly when they start melting.

You could also add ice cubes to all their drinks/water to make them cold too.

Oinkypig · 08/08/2022 20:32

I think frozen squash they could have as many as they want really. The shop bought lollies are high in sugar but it always confuses me when people suggest buying things with “natural ingredients” in threads like this. Where do they think sugar comes from? As soon as fruit is processed at all the intrinsic sugar is released and there really is no difference in giving a child a rocket lolly than an organic blackcurrant and apple one in terms of sugar (and usually the cheaper the product the less sugar there is) now there could be arguments about additives or other ingredients but people seem to be talking just about sugar content.

I also think your DH shouldn’t be telling you what you can’t eat!

StaunchMomma · 08/08/2022 20:32

Little ice pops, fine. Proper lollies or ice cream, no.

Mine hasn't asked for any so I haven't offered. They don't cool you down for long do they, really? Better to have some cold squash with ice cubes in.

My 18m old twins have home made lollies made from fruit pouches. They have 3 a day as each lolly is 1/3 of a pouch!

I give my 3yo as May rocket lollies as he wants - which is usually 3 a day!!!

missverstaendnis · 08/08/2022 20:36

also, just freeze yoghurt tubes, same thing really as them having them unfrozen?? I pop those into the freezer even for myself.
Hardly messy either

This is a guide to the sugar in different ice lollies if you're interested.

Thanks for posting that!

Ffsmakeitstop · 08/08/2022 20:49

He sounds like a miserable twat to be honest. In our house we'd have unlimited ice pops and maybe 2 lollies not so much ice cream.
Get yourself to Iceland, put the kids outside with their ice pops and send your DH out se he doesn't sweat the small stuff.

DSGR · 08/08/2022 20:52

One ice cream or ice lolly a day but unlimited water and sugar free squash

StandUpPirates · 08/08/2022 21:10

I only let mine have one. If they ask for more they get told to drink a bottle of water. However, when they're out with the neighbours they have 3-4 because each child goes in in turn. It's not every day though.
It was only 28 today, so not too hot, and they didn't ask for any.

Geppili · 08/08/2022 21:10

Your DH sounds controlling. Why doesn't he 'allow' you to have ice pops?

Geppili · 08/08/2022 21:12

Also who is with the kids more?

My DCs (6 & 8yo) are allowed 1 ice cream/lolly a day, but not every day - maybe 5 days out of 7 if it's hot. They don't have squash every day either though, so perhaps we are stricter than average on this?
They had one today, and before that was Friday.

hellotheirsugar · 08/08/2022 21:31

We made dog friendly ice cream last week. Very healthy and super yummy. Fresh fruit an Greek yogurt, mashed then frozen so my kids love this and so do the dogs. They find it great that they can all share 🙄 ooops!!!
But then just simple ice lollies the cheap ones from Tesco and they do sugar free ones that are sometimes okay and also frozen frubes! Also making your own ice lollies with sugar free fruit juice and frozen berries in are lovely !
To be honest they don't eat loads of junk but they do have 2/3 when the weather is awfully hot just so that their hydrated ?! If thwir home made an healthy then I don't see an issue !! As They don't always want to drink so freezing it is a fun way. Ino I'd rather eat ice all day then drink! ! X

Snozwanger · 08/08/2022 21:39

For my 8 and 4 year old it's one a day and we save the cone ice creams for the weekend. I try to mix it up and make some of our own from fruit juice or blended fruits. My daughter also likes milkshake with ice which might mix things up a bit for you (Crusha is a good sugar free milkshake mix).

prescribingmum · 08/08/2022 22:11

Puzzled by the number of people commenting about number of calories in ice creams, I've never considered calorie content in anything I feed my children and assumed noone did unless child had weight/eating issues

I'm far more concerned about additives and UPF than sugar so ice lollies are fruit puree/fresh fruit juice in a mould or frozen orange juice with pieces of other fruits. We also puree sweet fruits into Greek yoghurt at times and another option is frozen banana in food processor until ice cream consistency. They cam have all these daily, sometimes twice but definitely not the norm. Proper ice cream like cornetto/magnums are occasional treats.

Ice lollies aren’t just frozen squash. They contain far more sugar.

Sugar free doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Have you seen the ingredients in crusha?

Water, Colour (Concentrate of Beetroot and Carrot), Acid (Citric Acid), Preservative (Potassium Sorbate), Flavouring, Acidity Regulator (Tri Sodium Citrate), Antioxidant (Ascorbic Acid), Sweeteners (Sucralose, Acesulfame-K)

It’s ultra processed garbage.
