What did you give your dc for their 18th birthday?

Dalint · 08/08/2022 18:12

Was it well received?
If it wasn't well received, did they receive anything from someone else which they really valued or appreciated?
Approximate cost?
What did you yourself get if you remember (I don't remember)?
What would you have liked to receive?
Any other input?
Suggestions welcome from those who haven't hit the 18 milestone yet or from anyone really.
Would you suggest longevity (jewellery), or an experience, or some tech?
I'm at a loss but it's for my dd. I deliberately didn't specify the sex in the title as some gifts can cross over and there will be female equivalents.

My children were given money for traveling before going to Uni ….so am guessing about £500 return tickets !!

GucciBear · 08/08/2022 23:15

A cruise to the Med. For her 21st we sailed to see the Northern Lights. |21st Birthday spent in Oslo. Wonderful times full of memories.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 08/08/2022 23:26

Dd1 macbook. Loved it!
Dd2 equivalent money for a car
Dd3 is only 14 so we shall see! Each had/will have about £2k to play with but we wouldn't give them free reign with the cash.

Is it bragging though, or just answering the question? OP didn’t specify a budget. There’s users on this forum from all across the economic spectrum, and answers will reflect that.

It is bragging. People can just say money, since that’s what they gave their child. A sovereign is a lovely and expensive gift, a cruise is an amazing present, also expensive, and it’s not bragging because it’s answering the question. They’re answering the question for people who have a different budget. Whether you give your child £50 or £5000 it’s money, so specifying that you spent an extortionate amount of money is bragging, sorry.

Boo1321 · 08/08/2022 23:33

Hundreds are also a normal amount, I’m not calling out anyone who specified £400, £600 or even £900. it’s not rude if you specify that. But thousands to invest? really Hmm

I know. It's hard to see how the other half live at times and the step-up they get in life. That's life though and life is rarely fair.

My son got a very nice watch, and an 18k necklace, bracelet and a signet ring

I got a very expensive gold necklace for my 18th so it was nice to carry that tradition on

I got nothing for my 18th as my not very lovely Father had kicked me out by then.
(Abusive family)
My DD is going travelling next year so I'm giving her cash, plus I'll do what I did for her 16th.
I bought her 16 presents for each year of her life, some were practical, like a spice rack because she loves cooking, some were silly, so a big bar of Cadburys chocolate with her name on it.
Her main presents were a Pandora bracelet, a Tiffany necklace, and a really nice jewellery box with £100 in each of the three drawers.
She absolutely loved having 16 presents to open so I'll do the same again for her 18th.
I do spoil her rotten but she's an only child and I want her to have the absolute opposite of my (shit) upbringing.
Happy birthday to your dd!
❤️

PMK for ideas!

Thatiswild · 08/08/2022 23:57

I got a hot air balloon ride, that was amazing!

Pyewhacket · 09/08/2022 00:07

I gave her a gold bracelet and locket that belonged to my grandmother (I grew up with my grandparents) and her father gave her a Tag wrist watch.

You realise that hundreds is way beyond the budget of many? Despite being “normal” to you.

I don’t remember what I got as a present, but I know my mum took me out for dinner with my granny and my friend.

my dd1 got a laptop and dd2 got a musical instrument case, a bracelet and jeans.

secretfreckle · 09/08/2022 01:32

For daughter, a two silver Sibyl necklace. She asked me and my husband to choose a word each to describe her:

For mine, a gold necklace with tiny pearl pendant and matching bracelet. Wore them for my graduation and wedding

MintyCedricRidesAgain · 09/08/2022 01:40

I had my bedroom completely redecorated for my 18th, and a ring with my birthstone from my Dad which I still wear on a chain now my fingers are considerably fatter!

My DD is turning 18 next month and I'm taking her to London for a long weekend. We've got some lovely restaurants booked, Sky Garden, Hamilton Tickets, a cheese tour and indoor crazy golf which her aunt, uncle and cousins are joining us for.

I'm doing a lucky dip of 18 small gifts for the actual day...scratchcard, vodka and peach schnapps miniatures, chocolate, novelty pasta, nail polish, book of quotes, concertina file with all her adult documents in, scented candle, mug, personalised keyring with a scannable link to a Spotify playlist of songs from her growing up that have special memories attached, a couple of £10 vouchers/gift cards for shops she likes, 18th birthday badge, personalised shot glass...

There is a ring she'd like as well but that will be a last minute add on, finance permitting, if her dad doesn't get it for her.

SparklingLime · 15/08/2022 11:59

Did you decide on a present, @Dalint? It is a tricky one.

Amijustagrump · 15/08/2022 12:05

I got a car, my sister got a trip to disneyland as she didn't want a car. My 21st I got a diamond necklace with its proof of value to sell if I ever needed the money and my sister chose a diamond ring with the same certification

No as she will be back at school for her 18th and she is currently on holiday with my brother's family and her cousins so additional travel might not be appreciated. I'm swaying towards paying for nails and hair etc. for her and a friend. I'm also putting a photo album together for her. I've a lot going on at the moment so don't have much time to google. She loves musicals but if I buy tickets I need to check on her best friend's availability too.

DD got a long weekend in Paris

DS got a MAC.

You sound like a lovely, thoughtful mum, so your DD is already a winner.

Namerchangerextraordinaire · 15/08/2022 13:34

18 sovereigns.

I purchased one a year from the year he was born though, so there was one dated each year from his birth to 18.

JasperHale · 15/08/2022 13:45

My DS turned 18 2 weeks ago, and as he's massive football fan (watch and play), we went to Barcelona and watched Barca playing at Camp Nou. He was delighted!

redferrari · 15/08/2022 16:51

Pooled all the gift money and got myself a watch which was useful but my parents gave me a plain gold chain from a local jeweler. It's a classic piece I can wear at any age. I really treasure it. I have since bought many pendants I can wear with it.

XingMing · 15/08/2022 17:17

My favourite 18th birthday present was a very nice backgammon set from my uncle. I still have it, and it will be 50 next year!

XingMing · 15/08/2022 17:22

DS had an elderly Corsa given to him at the same time as the driving lessons for his 17th birthday. One GP also chipped in a bit towards the car.

LaughingGiraffes · 15/08/2022 20:20

I received a kitchenaid stand mixer for my 18th, I absolutely adore baking and my parents wanted me to receive a gift that would last.
