To tell my mum her eating makes me feel uncomfortable?

She is a crazy woman! Lightheartedly obviously

She laces things with salt. She usually eats a pizza, either just cheese pizza or pepperoni, and then puts a dollop of ketchup on the plate, and a little mountain of salt. She then dips it in both Confused

I made bacon sandwiches and she ate those. Then the next time she was round here, I made her sausages and mash with gravy

She put a mountain of salt on the plate and dipped the sausage in it like it was a sauce

I said to her it actually makes me feel uncomfortable

She said I'm really rude! But we have the sort of relationship where we just move on from little fall outs like that

Am I being rude? I don't know how her heart is still beating 😩

‘Uncomfortable’ what, like sand in your shoes?

WonderingWanda · 08/08/2022 17:50

Well, no one really likes to be told they are wrong do they. She is probably fully aware that it is bad for her and she did like it she to you that you were rude to point it out. I don't think it's particularly rude to raise a health concern with a loved one but of they dismiss it and they are an adult you have to respect their right to disregard the health implications. I probably wouldn't have worded it as you make me uncomfortable, rather 'I'm a bit worried about your salt intake'.

If shes craving salt I'd ask her to go to the dr to see if she has a deficiency.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 08/08/2022 17:55

You're being patronising. Presumably she has been on earth far longer than you. She knows salt is bad for her and has chosen not to care.

Her own child going on at her about how it makes her uncomfortable is only going to make her roll her eyes.

If you really can't just move on then print something off about the affect of salt, tell her you won't mention it again but you're going to give her the paper to do whatever she wants with.

You can't make her choices for her.

I see your mum had a stroke young which does make it worse. But I'm not sure what you could do that wouldn't sound like nagging!

Salt is bad for you but I’ve seen loads of old people eat this way. Like they can’t eat anything that’s not covered in salt or sauce. Weird thing is none of them are out of shape. They don’t seem to over eat.
I think it was pretty common in the 70’s and earlier for people to do this.

Tastebuds become less sensitive in old age. My grandma became a complete sugar addict and still somehow was underweight

Ooohyeah · 08/08/2022 18:05

Surely she’d get salt poisoning? Sounds awful!

PolishingCandles · 08/08/2022 18:05

@Suetodo2 She does, you don't argue with her 😂

memyselfi · 08/08/2022 19:02

Uncomfortable or concerned ?
Using the word uncomfortable gives the impression you're being put out somehow. Reading the title I honestly thought she was chewing with her mouth open or something.
I remember when a little pile of salt on the side of the plate was just how just did it but I'm older than your DM
She's already said you're rude I can't see how you can revisit the topic without causing further offence.
It's like being overweight , she already knows it's bad.

She should get her cortisol levels checked for Addison’s disease. Many people with Addisons crave salt and don’t process it in the same way as other people so actually eating it in larger quantities isn’t bad for them at all (I am one of those people).

This. Also, thyroid problems can lead to unusual salt cravings.

ShhDoNotTell · 08/08/2022 21:17

I’m wondering if she’s incorrectly got wrong info. You say she’s cut out sugar and on very low carb diets like keto you do need to increase your electrolytes (sodium, potassium and magnesium) — in a natural way this would include table salts. However mash and pizza and ketchup is not low sugar or low carb. So the information you’re giving is a bit confusing.

Does she think she’s on a low sugar diet hence the salt, but actually she isn’t?

sue20 · 24/11/2022 12:25

Forget rude she needs to understand what she’s doing to herself. Salt is addictive. Unless she also eats proper food ie veg salad home cooked she’s a heart attack/stroke in the making
