To tell my mum her eating makes me feel uncomfortable?

She is a crazy woman! Lightheartedly obviously

She laces things with salt. She usually eats a pizza, either just cheese pizza or pepperoni, and then puts a dollop of ketchup on the plate, and a little mountain of salt. She then dips it in both Confused

I made bacon sandwiches and she ate those. Then the next time she was round here, I made her sausages and mash with gravy

She put a mountain of salt on the plate and dipped the sausage in it like it was a sauce

I said to her it actually makes me feel uncomfortable

She said I'm really rude! But we have the sort of relationship where we just move on from little fall outs like that

Am I being rude? I don't know how her heart is still beating 😩

I eat loads of salt. I sometimes eat it on its own. I have really low blood pressure and dread to think what would happen if I didn't eat so much salt. I crave it and always have.
I know it's bad for most people but it isn't for me. Maybe your mum is the same.

Suetodo2 · 08/08/2022 16:50

Salt is bad for you but I’ve seen loads of old people eat this way. Like they can’t eat anything that’s not covered in salt or sauce. Weird thing is none of them are out of shape. They don’t seem to over eat.
I think it was pretty common in the 70’s and earlier for people to do this.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 08/08/2022 16:50

You are rude.

She's a grown woman. She can do her own research and has had a stroke.

This is her choice how to eat her food.

No, it's not healthy.

But my Mum is classed as prediabetic. She refuses to cut down on chocolate etc and I can't forever her to change.

I understand that this is frustrating but it is her choice.

sammyjoanne · 08/08/2022 16:51

id be worried about her blood pressure going up with the amount of salt intake.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 08/08/2022 16:51

Sorry, autocorrect. I can't 'force' her to change.

iloveyankeecandle · 08/08/2022 16:51

My nan used to eat like this.. she got to 95.

All my grandparents did/do. It grosses me out. Salt and sauce. And if they ever make anything sweet it is sweeter than sickly sweet.

Back in the day, that's how salt was used

I do remember that's what I did when I was first allowed it. You probably use less than sprinkling it

georgarina · 08/08/2022 17:04

It would worry me too. Especially considering the stroke. Can you just tell her that?

toomuchlaundry · 08/08/2022 17:08

Is her diet mainly pizza now?

Spanielsarepainless · 08/08/2022 17:18

I'm another one who loves salt but has low blood pressure. And I'm nearly 60. I used to make a salt sandwich.

oatmilk4breakfast · 08/08/2022 17:20

framing is everything. "Mum, I feel really worried for you when I see you eating so much salt as I've heard about how bad it is for your heart and I love you and don't want you to have a heart attack" is going to land really differently than "You make me feel uncomfortable by eating like that".

PolishingCandles · 08/08/2022 17:24

My mum is addicted to the stuff. She will shake it liberally all over whatever she's eaten, take a taste then liberally cover it some more.
She will cut a tomato in half, put a pile of salt on the plate, then rub the tomato in it before each bite.
Her BP is through the roof, but she refuses to listen. All your concern is met with ' I'm 93, don't tell me what to do!'
Drives me mad because I hate the stuff and never use it.

Cherchezlaspice · 08/08/2022 17:27

Did you post this about your sister last week?

If so, what’s going on here?

If not, there’s apparently a wave of posters with relatives who have pizza heavy diets and dip said pizza in salt and ketchup (which seems quite specific), to the posters’ great consternation. 🤨

Suetodo2 · 08/08/2022 17:28

@PolishingCandles

' I'm 93, don't tell me what to do!'

I mean she makes a pretty good point really.

TibetanTerrah · 08/08/2022 17:28

Apparently my grandad used to cut a tomato in half and pour a long stream of salt over it before eating it Confused

I probably eat too much salt but my BP is on the low side of normal and an unrelated ultrasound fairly recently showed various organs in perfect working order. You do build up like a taste tolerance to it though, I bet if she gave it up completely for a month and then went back to her old (current) ways she'd be horrified at how salty it all tasted Grin

OriginalUsername2 · 08/08/2022 17:32

I know someone like this and yes it makes me so uncomfortable! Same when she eats crazy sized portions. It’s not affecting me on paper but in reality I feel very uncomfortable around it, to the point it puts me off food.

FuzzyPuffling · 08/08/2022 17:34

BloodyCamping · 08/08/2022 15:34

Send her some online info about salt and health

If you want to be instantly cut out of her will.

Yes, I think you were rude. Leave her alone.

LakieLady · 08/08/2022 16:19

Since I had Covid, I have to have loads of salt on my food, much more than I used to.

My BP's still below normal though, despite being 67 and at least a stone overweight.

Try using MSG in some cases instead of salt?

It's much lower in sodium and, despite lots of internet nonsense about it, it's not harmful.

silverclock222 · 08/08/2022 17:36

Bacon and sausages are hardly healthy are they - even if grilled! Fine to have an opinion but shes an adult who can make her own decisions surely

InquiringMinds · 08/08/2022 17:39

shehesmesloos · 08/08/2022 15:48

My mum had a stroke at 21 so I'm worried!

This is serious, my Dad died young doing this. Before his death he had two heartaches, he died from the third. He would not listen when asked to cut down his salt in take. His behaviour salt wise mirrored your Mum’s. I wish I had advice for you, just know you have support here. Hoping to read some good news soon.

5zeds · 08/08/2022 17:44

None of your business and you are being outrageously rude. Does she comment on your diet?

0blio · 08/08/2022 17:46

Since I had Covid, I have to have loads of salt on my food, much more than I used to.

Normally the only food I add salt to is fish and chips but since I had covid I've been craving salt too - very unlike me.

Afterfire · 08/08/2022 17:47

She should get her cortisol levels checked for Addison’s disease. Many people with Addisons crave salt and don’t process it in the same way as other people so actually eating it in larger quantities isn’t bad for them at all (I am one of those people).
