To no longer support strike action?

Sobloodydone · 08/08/2022 12:55

I live in Liverpool where there is currently a bus workers strike going on, entering its 4th week after a walk out demanding pay that meets inflation. They have been offered in increase that they turned down claiming it wasn’t enough.

I am beyond frustrated now as the entire city is pretty much out of action in regards to public transport. It’s costing £25 a day in taxis to get to work who have said no working from home and threatening termination if attendance is missed. It’s just not sustainable!

I am working class and long supported strikes and many people have the opinion we should be supporting them no questions asked but what about the thousands of people they are affecting? Nobody is getting the price of inflation matched within their wages. Supposed to believe we’re all in it together when supporting them but what about everyone else who can’t get to work/hospital/shops/see their elderly family?! It’s an indefinite walk out so god knows what will happen if kids can’t get to school in 3 weeks!

I live just outside London and I naturally assume there's a strike or disruption on the trains at any given time. And have done for a few years now.

Kinda just got used to it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cheesuswithallama · 08/12/2022 23:13

Airport border agents will be striking soon. Though I am not sure it will make any difference with how most I encountered were😂

Hont1986 · 09/12/2022 00:00

Did they get a decent pay rise though?

Yes. They got the 11.1% pay rise they were asking for. Or in real terms, they are still earning the same as they did last year.

I understand that these strikes are an attempt to bring down the government. We did not vote for the rail unions or any other union to govern us.

Most of us did not vote for the government we have either.

Good for them. Nice to see a happy ending for a change.

Many in the private sector are getting just that

Evidence? My company got 1.5% this year.

The truth is if everyone had an increase in line with inflation, we'd be in an infinitely worse economic shit storm.

So we have to suffer a cut every year to avoid "an infinitely worse economic shit storm"
Capitalism doesn't look that attractive if that's the best it can do.

Be pissed off with a government who are quite happy to allow the super rich to siphon off money, not pay fair taxes and allow energy companies to profiteer.

Resenting strikers feeds the Tory greed machine. While we’re distracted fighting each other, we don’t notice what they’re doing.

Exactly. CEOs of FTSE100 companies got an average of 23% rise last year - there's no belt tightening "we're all struggling" for those cunts.

I like when wind up merchants suddenly pop in with these super valuable contributions 😁

I am also in the area and the bus drivers' salaries are high for Merseyside.

£1,200 per month, before tax isn't exactly stellar.

SkinnyFatte · 09/12/2022 13:54

If your wages aren't keeping up with inflation, join a union.

Weren't they on about 26k a year?
If i had to deal with ehat they are dealing with I would want 62🙈

MavisMcMinty · 09/12/2022 13:56

The government is hoping that strikers will lose public support, so well done you for falling in line. If a strike doesn’t disrupt services it isn’t worth doing. Industrial action is a worker’s only weapon, and it’s a weapon of last resort.

Yeah it's a piece of piss for a bus driver to get a job as a FTSE100 CEO. What a load of shit.

Yeah that makes 25k a year nearly so not 1200 before tax.

I am on their side but giving like half wage as information doesn't help anyone.

SinnerBoy · 09/12/2022 14:02

Doh! More like £1,700 a month. I'll blame my fat fingers, not my thickness....

That's how I got my job, I thought "I'm not earning enough, I want to be at exec level" and they said "okay" and here I am. I think the postgrad, qualifications and experience, alongside several not as well-paid jobs previously, were irrelevant.

In the first half I thought you will go for LinkedIn like story😂
