Not paying for childcare this autumn as bills go up

1000 replies

Essenceandvibes · 08/08/2022 10:35

I've just had an epiphany.....I absolutely won't be paying a penny for childcare this autumn as bills increase and I won't be made to feel guilty about it either. I can work from home and watch my baby and pick up my 10 year old from school without the assistance of anyone else and if my employer has an issue with it, he can pay an extra £2000 per month post tax to cover the cost of full time help.

Our bills are going to be about £800 a month just electricity and gas alone for our detached 4 bed house, this isn't even thinking about the increase of petrol or groceries.

The mortgage has also gone up a few hundred quid too....childcare and commuting is now a luxury not necessity and I really hope every parent joins me in asking for employers like it or lump it

Shameful the government have let everything get this far, the knock on effects will be huge

You know kids are infrastructure too right and parenting is a protected characteristic under the 2010 Equality Act?

Enjoy the tribunal I'm sure you've already cause your employer Rainbow 😂

Parenting is not a protected characteristic under the Equality Act.

But even so, you would not be dismissed for "parenting" but for poor performance in your role against your job description and/or personal objectives and targets.

Yes, I can suck up an extra £300 a month in costs yet do not live on another planet. This is because I live within my means, don't over stretch and anticipated price rises and inflation.

Also, it's not compulsory to work for a billionaire and feel bitter about it. It's perfectly acceptable to work for, say, a charity.

HintofVintagePink · 08/08/2022 23:50

Nice attitude OP. Fuck doing the job you are paid to do properly.

VeronicaFranklin · 09/08/2022 00:56

... And this is exactly why wfh will slowly migrate back into office /place of work.
Give people an inch and they then wanna take a mile.

Your employer will just sack you.

It's not their fault you chose to have two kids, your mortgage has increased, you live in a 4 bedroom detached and energy bills will be extortionate... Why should they pay you to look after your kids in works time!

Cookiesareworthit · 09/08/2022 05:27

Incredibly odd how no one is understanding the fact that some of us are fed up with paying thousands just to work in the first place, it was back breaking for me before the bill increase but now it's just insane. If you don't question things, they never get improved or resolved.

I understand it. I'm not stupid. But for most people having children is a choice.

I had some respect for your extreme thoughts but that's gone now when I realise you don't really know what you're talking about and will most likely be very dispensable at work.

Personally my nanny is fantastic and deserves every penny she gets. This is definitely not where I will be making cuts when the time comes. Quite the opposite i will make sure she is looked after properly.

And that’s exactly why people should stick together and refuse to return. They cant sack everyone but no, just because things were rubbish for you raising children you cant see beyond the end of your nose and think everyone should suffer the same fate.
Its better for children to be at home and its better for parents to be with their children, thats the starting point, we work backwards from there

Nothappyatwork · 09/08/2022 06:47

As for it’s not to their fault that you decided to live in a four bedroom detached what if we all decided to live in a tent somewhere, that would be end of the jobs for all the four bedroom detached builders and the mortgage advisors and the banks employees, its a bit late now to announce to the capitalists that it’s not their fault to that capitalism has been rammed down everybody’s throat for the last god knows how long . She wasn’t living in a four bedroom detached with two kids she wouldn’t be doing their shitty job in the first place, she’d no doubt be probably wandering around fields skipping in the Meadows enjoying herself.

Iamthewombat · 09/08/2022 07:42

Would she be living in these meadows, in a tent, as well as skipping around them? That would solve the energy bill conundrum. Take note, OP!

Send your children up chimneys or to a tanning factory. Let them earn their keep, especially the 10 year old.
Then you can get on with the job you were emp.oyed to do, and for which you are paid.
Or you can get real, ditch your plan for social reform, and grow up

ReneBumsWombats · 09/08/2022 07:48

She wasn’t living in a four bedroom detached with two kids she wouldn’t be doing their shitty job in the first place, she’d no doubt be probably wandering around fields skipping in the Meadows enjoying herself.

Well, she's free to give up her house and job and live unemployed in the meadows with her family if she thinks that's preferable.

Nothappyatwork · 09/08/2022 07:48

I wonder how many times Gladstone Disraeli was told to grow up 🤣

HintofVintagePink · 09/08/2022 07:52

The OP is hardly Disraeli. Her concern is with herself and how she will be affected. She wouldn’t be bleating about this issue if it didn’t affect her.

Indeed. "If only she were homeless, she'd be skipping round the meadows having fun!"

Or is that fascism?

Well you also think internet moderation is fascism, so...

The very fact that we can't all just willingly become homeless and live happily in fields is a rather key point to this. People need their jobs, which is why these battle cries from more secure people in easy roles don't work.

Hope the twins are OK.

NellyBarney · 09/08/2022 08:15

I sympathise, OP. Living and working conditions in the UK deteriorate beyond what I would call 'civilization', and people just shrug. It's not OK how we live. People deserve way better services and working conditions and government help for the taxes they pay and profit they make for employers. In Germany childcare is free for all, mat and pat leave 1 year fully paid for all. State hospitals better than the Portland Clinic. After a shock about Russian gas, gas storage is filled up, government subsidises energy costs - a massive crisis has been dealt with quickly and efficiently, while noone in our government has been doing anything apart from going on honeymoon and playfighting. What are we going to change things, as I don't believe we and our dc deserve such a bad country and the highest taxes and highest prices for childcare, tuition fees, energy in the developed world.

Dalaidramailama · 09/08/2022 08:50

@FinneusMum

No you didn’t get bored of me. You went off for an imaginary swim because many people had worked you out and your fragile ego couldn’t take it. I mean you were definitely coming across as a bit of a wally.

As you were though with your deflection and projection, you are rather entertaining 😄.

@NellyBarney

I agree, whilst there are a lot of people who do just shrug and that is frustrating I really don’t think the OP was going to start a revolution whereby we were all going to stop paying childcare and have our babies at home.

That may well work for her but it’s certainly not the answer for many women. For starters, it would be hard to provide quality childcare at home whilst also being busy working.
