Not paying for childcare this autumn as bills go up

Essenceandvibes · 08/08/2022 10:35

I've just had an epiphany.....I absolutely won't be paying a penny for childcare this autumn as bills increase and I won't be made to feel guilty about it either. I can work from home and watch my baby and pick up my 10 year old from school without the assistance of anyone else and if my employer has an issue with it, he can pay an extra £2000 per month post tax to cover the cost of full time help.

Our bills are going to be about £800 a month just electricity and gas alone for our detached 4 bed house, this isn't even thinking about the increase of petrol or groceries.

The mortgage has also gone up a few hundred quid too....childcare and commuting is now a luxury not necessity and I really hope every parent joins me in asking for employers like it or lump it

Shameful the government have let everything get this far, the knock on effects will be huge

I have a professional job where I permanently wfh. I can tell you I can't do my job and look after a baby competently at the same time. I work with a lot of professional people who would be exactly the same. It would DEFINITELY not be possible in the vast majority of professional jobs. No matter how much you insist it would be.

This. Either the job or the child (or both) will suffer.

I’m an upper primary teacher (no kids of my own). We have noticed since Covid that more and more parents who would previously have put pupils into summer activities whilst they worked, are now WFH and keeping the children at home. Their children are older, so they think they’re fine to supervise themselves in another room. Pupils tell me that they find these days long, boring and lonely. They spend a lot of time unsupervised on screens.

I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that mental health and weight issues are now two huge concerns amongst the same group of preteens.

Debate is all well and good, but resorting to put downs and rudeness when things aren't going your way isn't, in my experience, a sign of intelligence.

Agreed.

I'm a lawyer, it's literally my profession.

Seeing through people's awful arguments and attempts at deflection when they are wrong is unfortunately also part of it. So this is all very familiar.

@FinneusMum

I really, strongly do not think it's me making a fool of myself at this point.

But you crack on. 😂

Two lawyers and a psychologist. Think we've got the measure of this poster 😂😂

Thanks for quoting and confirming that @FinneusMum did indeed say she worked for 2 hours a day and 1 of those is just responding to emails.

She is out of touch. Her responses remind me of narcissistic rage to be honest. It’s ….. interesting.

How can you work from home with a baby? That would be a nightmare.

A woman did this on her training, I was astonished, she is still working for the company, no idea if the baby is there too.

To be honest, just do it until they complain, but don’t volunteer the information to anyone at work

NeedToLeaveNow · 08/08/2022 17:53

£800 a month for just gas and Electric????
That cant be right!?!?!

@Cookiesareworthit they've deleted loads of her posts

I've been following the thread, she hasn't said anything worth getting banned or deleted for, which is why I'm concerned that Mumsnet are behaving like fascists

Your employer will probably just sack you.

Yup

Mallysmomma · 08/08/2022 17:54

Great; so all the nannies should now be out of jobs according to you?? In a climate where the cost of living has increased. What an entitled load of rubbish! Of course if you can juggle childcare and work then you do to save on the cost of childcare but most people can’t and sounds like you are happy to do your job badly which wouldn’t make you a desirable employee either.

Interesting indeed.... 🤔

Bunnycat101 · 08/08/2022 17:55

It is perfectly sensible for employers to have clauses around expecting childcare for the under 5s. Mine has been very flexible when I’ve had a child home when sick and I’ve still been able to do enough at work but the reality is it is a very different beast having a 6yo at home watching tv and sleeping on the sofa for the odd day than it is having a 1 year old at home all day every day. Naps don’t last forever and as a manager I wouldn’t sign off an arrangement where an employee wfh without childcare as I’d be too worried about any legal repercussions if something happened to the child. It is too easy for something to happen when you’re distracted with little ones.

They've been deleting Internet forum posts from known socks, as per the rules. There's quite a way to go before they become fascists.

Thistooshallpass01 · 08/08/2022 18:00

Why is OP getting so much negativity? Most people who work from home do other things?!!!!!

There's a bit of difference between putting on the odd load of laundry, and looking after a small child.

midgetastic · 08/08/2022 18:01

There is a lot of difference using an thinking moment to hang the washing out then entertaining a small child , responding to its cries

rainbowmilk · 08/08/2022 18:03

If your child requires as little attention as your dishwasher then crack on but I’m guessing that’s not quite accurate.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 08/08/2022 18:03

Well this thread took quite the turn didn’t it?

And little old me with her 16/17 hour days and lack of meaningful qualifications saw the snark coming a mile off.

And quite possibly the hosiery.

Starting to see why many on here aren't earning well and being valued at work

Rude.

Looking after a baby is not "doing other things" like pottering about loading a dishwasher for 5 minutes. It's a full time job that requires your full attention. Or at least it should be, otherwise I'd argue it's neglectful parenting. 🤷‍♀️

I think we should all be a bit worried that Mumsnet are disabling her account actually.....what happened to free speech?

When we sign up we agree to the guidelines. If she's breached the guidelines they're right to remove her.

I've been following this thread from the start, she didn't.

If enough people don't like your opinions and report you, MNHQ will delete.

Shame on @MNHQ
