To think LinkedIn has gone weird?

daysayso · 07/08/2022 21:39

It feels like Facebook or Instagram.

People are posting themselves drinking beer, in Ibiza and with their kids - is it just me to think it's supposed to be a professional platform so this is just weird?

What kind of things do you post on LinkedIn? I'm quite new to it so maybe I'm wrong - interested to hear others opinions.

It's always been full of cringy stuff, but definitely got worse. If you want a chuckle have a look at 'The State of LinkedIn' - some hilarious stuff on there:

womencanlift Great minds!

whatwouldsueheckdo · 07/08/2022 23:46

Agree. Also seem to be getting lots of very dull surveys with complex voting - along the lines of ‘what would you like to see in your work canteen? Use the thumbs up reaction for prawn sandwiches, clapping for pizza, lightbulb for chips…’ or somesuch nonsense.

KittenKong · 07/08/2022 23:48

Yes it’s weird. It used to be for work. Now it’s people announcing their new pronouns and photos of people weeping for pats.

HotCaterpillar · 07/08/2022 23:56

Yanbu, it's very cringeworthy. Sandy has just taken up golf hashtag mental health matters, Gary just changed his pronouns and got engaged hashtag living his best life.

Loads of long stories about personal lives. Nothing about actual work.

Linnet · 08/08/2022 00:39

My friends partner is on LinkedIn. They have just finished their degree and their profile says things like, “fresh off the factory line” “kept the show rocking at home while studying” “ready to climb that ladder with thighs of steel”

It all sounds very odd and they have no actual work experience having been at home with children while my friend worked and they did their studying.

mydogsteppedonabee · 08/08/2022 01:33

Yanbu
It's a pile of pish

Youtubedrivel · 08/08/2022 07:04

I use it extensively both to promote the business I work for and as a news feed for the industry I work in. What posts you see are highly dependent on who your connections are and who/what you follow, so I don’t see too much of the type of tut mentioned above, I would guess maybe 1-2% of my feed. Mostly it’s just industry news. I have noticed that when mentioning conferences I will be attending, I get 10-25x the interest if I post a selfie rather than the conference agenda for example, but I still only post a couple of selfies a year as I don’t want to be all ‘look at me!’ on LinkedIn.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 08/08/2022 07:11

My company is very into well being and we use it a lot for promoting great benefits we have and that involved loads of dads posting pics of them and their babies when we increased our paid paternity leave to 6 weeks for example

We work in tech and need to be a great place to work with grey benefits otherwise people just go work somewhere better! There’s heaps of jobs available

so we are always promoting stuff on linked in 🤷‍♀️

guess it’s not for everyone but I like it and works for me

Wonnle · 08/08/2022 07:24

It's always been weird and pretty pointless as far as i'm concerned

daysayso · 08/08/2022 07:49

@SouthOfFrance I just started following it. Hilarious 😆

Stalkers paradise. Why not put your full name out in the public domain, where you work, where you went to university, where you grew up, your first dog’s name, etc.

creepy wankery.

LampLighter414 · 08/08/2022 08:03

Yep full of fake posts about being the best interviewer or hiring manager ever, insane levels of over sharing about personal health or that of family members (I wonder if they’ve asked - in some cases they are probably quite unlikely to ever see the post themselves) and just general spam of fake/disproven news (e.g. clips of amazing new technology which turn out to not be real)

I avoid the main feed now except for friends/former colleagues promotions/job moves and only use it myself for the jobs board.

Cazziebo · 08/08/2022 08:06

It used to be a really valuable platform where I could keep up to date with developments in my (niche) sector and also see who's doing what. I used to get a fair bit of business from LinkedIn.

Now it's all bragging about their kids getting degrees, people recovering from illness, and loads of mental health/look at me I'm so radical I got myself a tattoo/downtime painted toenail selfies/40 days without alcohol type posts.

I'd agree it's on the way out. Shame as it did serve a useful purpose. I wonder what all the LinkedIN consultants will do now....

Jmaho · 08/08/2022 08:13

I joined it and it showed me the profiles of a few colleagues on my Facebook friends list. Quite amusing to see that the guy who has been on a performance management plan since he started and now on his final warning for sickness, is apparently in a more senior position than me and in charge of training within the department...

@CherryColaRoller

I've noticed a couple of threads just today where your comments have just been so at odds to everyone else. Not in a good way, at all.

LinkedIn is 'supposed' to be a business site. I joined in 2013 after being made redundant and it was very useful back then. Now? Baby pictures galore, Holiday snaps. FFS

I know people have lives outside work so fine use Facebook et al. There are enough fun social media sites but these fools have to try and get their sad little lives spread everywhere.

I rarely use LI these days as it is really boring having to scroll past all the bloody unnecessary posts to find a grown up topic.

It's been going like this for awhile now and I agree it's foolish. It was meant to be a professional networking site. That's what I use it for still. Although even then, it's mutated a bit as my company actually send us preformated stuff to post now so my fees is just full of people i know who are either posting the exact same thing, cos I work with them, or our mutual acquaintances in the same industry liking the posts. It started with pronouns, that's all I'm saying.

supadupapupascupa · 08/08/2022 10:09

We use it for networking. Finding new clients and staff. It still works well for that.
Recruitment is HARD right now, I guess some companies are doing what they can to attract staff!
I don't actually pay any attention to my feed. But my DH does

billyt · 08/08/2022 10:14

@CherryColaRoller

I don't care who posts on Facebook, I don't use it.

Facebook and LinkedIn are not the same.

Facebook was/is aimed at social media posters.

LinkedIn was created as a business site. And it allows these stupid posters without limit. I know lots of people like LI but they are probably the type the posters are aiming at, anyway.

I know of lots of people who have either greatly reduced their use of LI or left completely. As I said, there are enough SM sites without the need to take over everything else.

apintortwo · 08/08/2022 10:17

YANBU

It reflects the state of society nowadays. Just another outlet for people to be self-absorbed and virtue signal

SD1978 · 08/08/2022 10:19

Absolutely. I don't really care what recent events you and your family attended. I'm wondering what the next app will be bow this has gone soft and social.

And our point is it's evolving ina stupid and counter productive direction, which is what virtually everyone thinks apart from virtue signallers / narcs / recruitment people.

crumpet · 08/08/2022 10:27

I had a similar conversation yesterday with a friend - it’s all insta-posts now. Won’t be long before filters and pouting, the way it’s going.
