To think some might spend £650 energy payment on other things?

I'm prepared to get flamed here, as I know the benefits system is a touchy subject.

However, I was just wondering whether many people will not use the £650 lump sum payment for it's true purpose, given that it's the summer holidays and there are lots of temptations to spend on other things.

These people then won't be any better off when it comes to the winter?

OP posts:

For example my dh who is early 60 s cant afford the fuel to go to work . He cycles daily .
Other people have struggles too and could do with help

Its hard not to be wishing for benefits and windfalls like this , or free school meals, or dental care sometimes. I guess we are tired. And want to highlight that sometimes benefit bashing can come from a feeling of struggle for some ? A wish for help too.

The best way to get help is to join together with those less well off with you, so more voices are raised in unity.

Bashing those on benefits will not help your struggle, in fact it will make it worse. If the tabloids and people like the OP can whip up enough indignation about people receiving this money, then the government will be strongly placed to not have to do it again. Everyone loses out, because if they stop helping people less worse off than you, then your chances of getting help have got lower not higher.

I’m getting a tattoo, hun. I can’t decide between the word “Feckless” in gothic script or a portrait of the winner of Love Island on a unicorn

“Joking” aside, it’s none of your business and I think you’ll find those who need this benefit are generally pretty good at budgeting.

That’s gawjus hun. 😍

I think I’ll get something inspirational for the kids

"These people". So bloody patronising. Awful.

shinynewapple22 · 07/08/2022 12:12

Lol @Squiff70 I think @Trying20 is attempting a bit of irony in their post ! I knew when I read it that someone would take it seriously and be up in arms .

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/08/2022 12:12

I certainly hope so. Thick curtains, a heated throw, and an oil filled radiator would be good buys.

SpeckofDustUponMySoul · 07/08/2022 12:14

Mine has gone on school uniform for my daughters, who are starting Reception in September. I've still bought everything, including shoes, preloved. It's just meant I have been able to buy sufficient amounts.

The rest is going towards a new washing machine (been hand-washing since my old machine broke).

'kay, OP?

(And, OP? I know you won't come back, but please check your facts before you post on MN).

Boybandfacedfannyfart · 07/08/2022 12:16

Fwiw - @Trying20 ’s post was in response to mine and I could clearly tell it was tongue-in-cheek - in direct response to my sarky post!

Don't wish to sound judgy here but I think it's hard for some posters on mumsnet to appreciate that SOME people can be feckless with money. Not everyone, but I have known many people who would blow money on trivial things and not put it towards the real essentials.
Of course many don't and are very good at cutting their cloth, but to assume that this goes for every single person is pushing it a lot.
My own dh wastes money , it's been a bone of contention for many years and he had the the ' life is short ' mantra during the last recession too. I've had to rein him in a lot , but my own parents were very frugal and we were quite poor , but we were still able to pay our bills. They didn't have debts. We had a lot of debt at one time. It's not a good way to live.
It's not always black or white though.
People have different priorities as well.
I'm sure the extra help will benefit many, but a few will go out and blow it all too I'm sure and to think otherwise is naive.

SantanaBinLorry · 07/08/2022 12:21

Our 1st £150 went on, well I'm not really sure. Went in and out the bank again straight away.
The next £400 will 100% be being spent on a holiday!

weleasewoderick23 · 07/08/2022 12:23

@Squiff70

It was clearly a sarcastic post.
Jeez.

The universal fuel payment of £400 will technically release £400 for everyone to spend on something else are you concerned how that will be spent? I’d say the people most likely to spend the additional money on essentials are those on low income? There’s been a non means tested fuel payment to pensioners for years, even those on high incomes?

spanishsummers · 07/08/2022 12:30

Oh what a coincidence. Truss supporter much, OP? At least they won't spend it on the rich or on arms.

@Crikeymaccrikey . You have a very good point. Some people are just above benefit thresholds and would also like some from extra help . The £400 winter fuel will be a help but only just scratches the surface of helping towards growing costs .
Im sure most who get the cost of living payment will use it very wisely but yes some will buy the Ps5 .

LampLighter414 · 07/08/2022 12:33

My friend had eyeballed it for a few hours with her tattoo artist. I think they will be fine as they have wangled free electric under blankets for every bed and shower at work/when visit parents to save on electric powered hot water (no mains gas in village)

BungleandGeorge · 07/08/2022 12:35

Given that utilities, council tax, national insurance (I know it will have reduced again last month for low earners), groceries and just about everything else have already increased significantly I doubt even the ‘feckless’ will be in a position to squander the money as they’ve been paying out £100s more in bills? Id guess just my increased NI and council tax april til July is more than the £300 odd that people received

GoodJanetBadJanet · 07/08/2022 12:35

Well yes, some people might need to use it to help feed their children, buy new school uniforms etc.. it’s none of your business what they spend it on
This.
Seriously can't get worked up over somebody needing it to spend on something else.

VandyCan · 07/08/2022 12:36

I'd actually say many will

There will be a shortage of blow up hot tubs from B&M

CheshireCat1 · 07/08/2022 12:37

It comes to two payments, my mum has just received the first instalment. We pay mums bills and also pay for her food shopping between us, so she won’t need it for that. So she’s buying a new cooker with it.

Randomthoughts992 · 07/08/2022 12:40

Yeah so what? I've used mine so far on toys for the kids and some days out. What does it matter? my bills are still getting paid, and some arnt because even if it does go towards it .. it doesn't really help does it? what about when that's used up, what about the rest of the bills? they are still too high for most people to afford.

My energy is £300 a month together and still rising , so that government money would pay for 2 months but what then? Im still stuck paying £300 a month or more til whenever. It helps and im so greatful but i dont begrudge people wanting to use it.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 07/08/2022 12:44

So you're not paying some of your bills and are using the money designed to help pay said bills on childrens toys

Christ

OldFan · 07/08/2022 12:47

It'd still mean their other money can be used for electric rather than the things they might've needed to buy.

If they spend it on luxuries/extras then that's down to them that they have less money towards electric than they would've had.

When the first payment went in I did buy a few things, then I gave that £324 or whatever pounds to my electric company. So I was quite broke that month lol.
