To ask for handhold with Invisalign?

Got my Invisalign fitted on Thursday, so I realise it’s early days. I just want to know that it gets less uncomfortable, basically. It’s not really painful as such - just so irritating!

I have top and bottom trays, and I dread taking them out because there’s that moment of real pressure on the front teeth once I’ve got the back off and am pulling it round. Is that normal?!

Eating is no fun because of all the stupid attachments (I have them on virtually every tooth) - teeth feel tender and weird.

Please tell me this will be worth it 😬I’m on Invisalign lite so don’t think it will be much more than 14 trays. I was surprised at this tbh as I though my teeth were quite bad. But that still feels like a long time to carry on with this lot in my gob.

It is hard for the first few weeks but it'll stop hurting so much. They will usually say it's 14 trays and then add extra trays so it will be a bit longer. Our the new tray in just before bed, then it doesn't hurt so much.

Wonkytoothedcrone · 06/08/2022 09:11

Thank you @Cherryblossoms85 . Did you find taking them out a bit traumatic?!

First 2 weeks are hard going and you'll wonder what you've done. Stick with it and get some of these otherwise it's non nail polish for the duration!!

Good luck, it's worth it. There is loads of info on the r/Invisalign subreddit too

User280905 · 06/08/2022 09:14

Yes it gets better. Taking them out at first for me was exactly how you describe. Either you just get used to the feeling or you get better at taking them out, I'm not sure.
I assume you're unhooking both sides st the back then pulling off the front? Try to lift up rather than pull, but it's hard when you've got all the attachments on. I had attachments on pretty much every tooth too.
Started off with 14 trays, got 7 more then I was done.

Wonkytoothedcrone · 06/08/2022 09:25

Thank you so much 😊 Will try that kit @RealDeeBliss
The orthodontist told me to pull from one side - but will try to do both if that’s better.
How soon did you guys see movement would you say?

It is so worth it. You'll get used to it. I had 28 trays in total and I also had buttons on my teeth.
It gets easier to insert and remove towards the end of your time on each tray, but then you're back to square one with the next tray. I promise it is totally worth it though.

LivesinLondon2000 · 06/08/2022 09:50

Yes the first 2 weeks are awful and I nearly gave up a few times then. Just thought there is no way I can do 18 months of this. But so glad I didn’t - it got much better after a couple of weeks. I didn’t even notice I had them in after that and taking them in and out was easy even when I switched to a new tray.

Wonkytoothedcrone · 06/08/2022 09:55

Thank you all 😊This is what I needed to hear!

I had 40+ trays and I think it took a week or two of getting used to. I had to have some of my bottom teeth "shaved" down to allow for movement so I actually looked better with the trays in then out because it hid my weird looking teeth lol.

All I can say is it's the best £4k I've ever spent and I now how wonderful straight teeth. Some things aren't worth the discomfort and hassle but Invisalign absolutely is worth it.

Best of luck! I'm sure you'll be glad you stuck with it.

Cherryblossoms85 · 06/08/2022 10:12

@Wonkytoothedcrone Yep...also really hates the bite ramps, was glad I only had about 10 trays of those! I had 40 trays in total, lucky me😃must say my least favourite part is actually the permanent aligner behind my teeth, still hate the feeling of it but it works.

Crochetandcoke · 06/08/2022 10:13

Are you using a sensitive toothpaste?

Wonkytoothedcrone · 06/08/2022 10:28

@Crochetandcoke yes, I always use sensitive toothpaste 👍

I had 14 trays, then was gutted to be told I needed a further 10. Hated them, and not sure if I would do it again if I could go back in time. It is nice having straight teeth now it's finally over.

I gave up on following most instructions and hated them less after that. Started off doing it by the book, then got heartily fed up and went my own way! 😁 I DID avoid anything more than medium warm as I think hot things can distort them. But otherwise I ate in them, drank in them and pretended I wasn't wearing them. I'd just rinse them when I went to the bathroom. I also switched them over after about 5 days (against the advice) and wore the last one I was given (my dentist only ever gave me 4 at a time) for a much longer period...seemed to work well for me.

Eating mcoys crisps seemed to scratch them. Everything else was absolutely fine to eat wearing them in my experience!

glamourousindierockandroll · 06/08/2022 12:53

If you don't mind me asking, how much are you paying for it? I had a consultation recently, had been expecting up to about £3000 and they quoted me over £5000. I do need to sort my teeth out as they've moved a lot in the last ten years (thanks, pregnancy) but that is a scary amount of money.

Reallyreallyborednow · 06/08/2022 12:56

Dc (17) got invisalign but hated them so much we switched to regular metal braces. Much happier with them and the results are so much faster, I suspect they weren’t being worn as much as they should because of the PITA getting them in or out.

Spinner12345 · 06/08/2022 12:59

I had attachments on almost every tooth (some had two attachments) and the beginning was agony. It gets much better and was definitely worth it. I didn’t need any extra trays at the end which my dentist put down to consistently wearing for the 22 hours each day

avacadoacrobatics · 06/08/2022 13:00

@Lavenderosemary - did you really eat in them? I started drinking in them from day three as it was driving me demented but I haven't attempted to eat yet. Were they really ok?

The first two weeks for me were awful! Dental wax helped me. I still have four extractions to come and 56 fecking trays so it will be a long journey. I hope it is worth it!

FarFarFarAndAway · 06/08/2022 13:31

I couldn't believe how awful it was the first two days, I think I cried and wondered if I would be able to carry on, but then it all got a lot easier. It does pull getting them in and out. I had teeth that were wonky from a fixed brace but no retainer, so I was a great candidate for Invisalign and I love my straight teeth now.

Vainandjustrealised · 06/08/2022 13:32

Gets better but It is sore

Keep going - this is my smile now post invisalign! No regrets! ( wear retainers every night )

Best tip for cleaning them use the denture cleaning tabs that fizz in the water other wise they get rank
Plenty of paracetamol and ibuprofen first few days
Soft foods - soups and I used to have protein shakes to make up calories

xxcatcatcatxx · 06/08/2022 13:37

Kind of but not really. It only hurts for the first couple of days but obviously because you’re changing the trays it’s more of a predictable pain which you definitely get used to. You’ll be so glad you did it💕 xxx

WisteriaHysteria22 · 06/08/2022 13:41

Bookmarking as I'm going for it in October.

I had the old school metal ones and I'll be honest it was not pleasant most of the time but it was always soooo much worse and very painful after having them tightened and but it did lessen in the weeks after having them tightened. My Mum gave me Ibuprofen and then a few times I seem to remember codeine on a night - eeek!

WisteriaHysteria22 · 06/08/2022 13:42

They look fab @Vainandjustrealised

DamnAKarmaDingDong · 06/08/2022 13:47

I could have written this post when I started mine. In fact, I moaned about it at the time to someone and she said, 'OMG I thought it was the most expensive mistake I'd ever made on the first day,' then showed me her perfect smile.

Definitely gets easier after the first three or four aligners. I started to see results after a month or so, and I kept the first aligners to remind me how much had changed as I went alone. Download the Trayminder app - it gets you into good habits. But be prepared for it to take a few more adjustments than you think, as not all teeth move easily; thanks to lockdown I've only just got my final stubborn tooth turned now after nearly three years.

PartridgeCoop · 06/08/2022 13:51

I felt like this! First 2 days of any tray are the worst, and the first two weeks are the worst overall. I did 28 and I really missed them (weirdly) when they were gone. I got really used to them and liked having them in. It will get better, and make sure to take weekly pictures, it's amazing how fast your teeth move!
