Kicked off the TV at 10pm most nights by DH so he can watch the news

So again tonight in the middle of watching a programme DH says it’s time to watch the news at 10pm. Now why can’t he just watch on it on a tablet/iPad? Why do I have to stop what I’m watching and go onto the iPad or just stop watching TV and go to bed. It’s not every night he does this but I feel like I am being bullied when he does.

It’s not fair for him to demand a channel change partway through your programme. Taking turns seems reasonable.

Don't people in the UK have TVs in their bedroom as well as the loungeroom? It's standard where I am.

We certainly do. We have one in he living room, one in the bedroom and one in the spare room/gym/office.

DH and I never watch TV together Grin

Nope, no to in the bedroom for a reason. Works great.
but who still sets their lives by watching the news? Think it’s been a decade since we watched the news!

illiterato · 06/08/2022 15:39

@CatsandFish some do but they’d never admit it. Very non-U.

hangrylady · 06/08/2022 15:40

I'd be telling him to fuck off, he sounds like a Victorian father.

Crinkle77 · 06/08/2022 15:42

It depends really. Are you hogging the telly all night every night? If so then I'd say yabu but haven't got enough info to make a judgement.

I think you're confusing the word 'partner', with 'twat'.

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 06/08/2022 15:54

Perhaps get a newspaper delivery instead, iron it crisply every morning and place it on a silver platter for his perusal.

WatermelonSugarSigh · 06/08/2022 15:56

@DorothyZbornakIsAQueen nope, just is another reminder of how lovely it is to have complete control of everything in my own home. I love not compromising on anything

Hadalifeonce · 06/08/2022 15:57

You are being unreasonable to allow this to happen if you are in the middle of watching something. He should either watch it on another device, or watch it on plus 1 if your programme has ended.

RedWingBoots · 06/08/2022 15:59

Buy another better TV using his money and set it up in a different room.

He will soon start watching the news on that...

HollowTalk · 06/08/2022 15:59

Aquamarine1029 · 05/08/2022 22:14

Why can't you watch your show on the iPad?

You sound quite hypocritical. You had your time, he can't have his? Buy another TV if this is such a problem.

Oh ffs, she's in the middle of watching something! It makes sense for him to start watching a different programme on a different device.

seaweedhead · 06/08/2022 16:05

With 24 hour rolling news, hundreds of news websites, regular radio bulletins etc is there really any need for anyone to drop everything so they can sit and watch the 10 o clock news.
What happens if you tell him no?

Topgub · 05/08/2022 22:38

Tell him to fuck off

This is Mumsnet. That would be abusive and grounds for divorce.

The 10 o'clock news is definitely more informative than the rolling 24 hour news, to be fair.

Or you could find a partner who treats you with respect… you don’t have to be single to avoid being treated badly. I’ve been with DH for 10 years and we’ve literally never done this to each other.

LaingsAcidTab · 06/08/2022 16:59

It's not so much what he's interrupting or why, but that he has become so inflexible that he is unwilling or unable to compromise. This won't be restricted to simply this, but rather speaks to a general cognitive concretisation that hits many people (esp. men, ime) in later life. This does not bode well.

Divorce is time consuming, expensive and emotionally draining.

Depends who. DS doesn’t however I have a TV in my room, living room & guest room

ILoveCreamCrackersMe · 06/08/2022 17:23

Are you one of these people who hogs the TV all night watching soap after soap? What's the programmes he's interrupting?

HideousKinky · 06/08/2022 17:29

Why not just buy a 2nd TV and put it in the bedroom?

BarbaraofSeville · 06/08/2022 17:37

If they've got at least one ipad in the house they don't need a TV cluttering up the bedroom.

He can just watch the news on a tablet but maybe the OP could switch to a tablet and take turns with the main TV?

Summertimesunshineandfizz · 06/08/2022 17:41

Nope. One tv in this house. In the sitting room.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 06/08/2022 17:43

Kicks you off? Not "could I watch the news or do you really want to watch this on the big screen?". If he's actually kicking you out you have bigger issues than the TV. If you're set on staying with someone who doesn't know how to share I'd buy another TV.
