Holiday to think room is important?

Tinkerblonde1 · 05/08/2022 17:04

People say its just a room to sleep in but to me the accommodation actually makes my holiday.

I mean if it was a drunken one night in a dodgy hotel well...I can manage that (just) and have done. Maybe even two at a push but not anything over that.

I can't imagine getting on a plane all excited and the room being a 70-80s shrine when I arrive, this would really put a downer on my holiday. I know that I could stay out all day but I do like to sit, sleep and get ready in something that doesn't look like my Grandma's living room from 86.

My oh thinks I am ridiculous and thinks the money saving is worth it as the price difference would pay for several nights out. I don't agree. For me the accommodation can make or break a holiday. I have always felt like this and so does my sister. Our husbands think we are ridiculous.

I agree with you OP

featheryfancy · 05/08/2022 17:11

I'm with you on this. Why would I pay to stay somewhere worse than home.

easyday · 05/08/2022 17:11

Agree. When a student I stayed in some pretty grim places to be able to afford the trip but I'm not doing that anymore. I'm too old to rough it.
I choose the place carefully - it has to have excellent reviews, good location and right price. Next weekend I'm taking my daughter to Bath. The hotel is an independent townhouse, no TV in the rooms, no lift (we are on the third floor), but big rooms, walking distance to town, good breakfast, parking and great reviews. It definitely is a major part of the holiday.

im 50/50
i wont spent shitloads on a hotel room only to sleep in it, but i wont go for the cheapest option

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 05/08/2022 17:12

YANBU. I have had much better holidays in Marriotts than hostels. Luckily DH preferred them too. I need comfortable downtime!

Clariana · 05/08/2022 17:13

Absolutely agree with you OP, I like a comfy bed, great quality linen and good facilities in room and bathroom. All part of the holiday experience!

Divebar2021 · 05/08/2022 17:13

I think it depends on a couple of things - the type of holiday you’re having and what the savings allow you to do. I would be happy with simple accommodation for a city break where you’re really out all day for example. I would rather downgrade my accommodation costs ( with self catering or 3 star hotel ) and stay away for longer or afford more excursions etc than pay for a 5 star just to have a nicer room to dry my hair in. My main needs are good location, comfortable bed and clean bathroom.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 05/08/2022 17:15

Agree. I refuse to stay anywhere for more than a night that's less nice than my own house.

You'll never catch me camping.

I'm with you on this. Why would I pay to stay somewhere worse than home.

I was going to say exactly this.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 05/08/2022 17:19

It depends what sort of a holiday you’re going for. If it’s an activity type holiday then I’d agree that the accommodation doesn’t matter too much, but it sounds more like you want to go on holiday because you want to go and visit somewhere nice. Which you can’t do if the place you’re staying in is grotty. If you want to be able to spend time in your room and in the hotel using their facilities, then it has to be somewhere nice.

FangsForTheMemory · 05/08/2022 17:20

I booked a last minute holiday earlier this year and the hotel - which was not cheap - was so horrible that I came home early. I used to be firmly in the 'it's only a place to sleep' camp, but if the accommodation isn't up to the standard I have at home, I'm not happy.

Sexnotgender · 05/08/2022 17:20

It doesn’t need to be fancy, but it must be super clean.

Topseyt123 · 05/08/2022 17:20

I agree with you too. I don't want to go on a much anticipated and longed for holiday to stay somewhere grimy and grotty. I just can't sleep in that sort of shit and that would ruin the holiday. It's one of the reasons I could never go camping.

The accommodation must be comfortable. I need to look forward to getting back to it after a day out or at the pool. I like to sit comfortably to have a cup of tea and read my book there before heading out again.

Fortunately, DH agrees.

Sirzy · 05/08/2022 17:23

If it’s just a base then as long as it’s clean and has a private bathroom I am happy.

when Ds is with us we need the room to be somewhere to escape too so it matters a lot more that it’s nice

thiccapricot · 05/08/2022 17:24

I’m with you. I don’t want green and yellow squiggly line duvet covers

Goldbar · 05/08/2022 17:26

YANBU. I'm not fussed about decor, but it needs to be clean, uncluttered, spacious and comfortable. With somewhere comfy to sit other than the bed. And since DC, we try very hard to get somewhere with a separate sleeping area so we don't have to creep round in the dark after bedtime.

yonce · 05/08/2022 17:30

Totally agreed!! My friends have mentioned our holidays are way more expensive that theirs - we don't fly economy or stay in budget hotels. I want a hotel that is nicer than my own home! I like a luxury large bed, nice seating area, fancy bathroom etc etc. I'm not going on my holidays to spend time somewhere less luxurious than my own bed 😂

PuttingDownRoots · 05/08/2022 17:30

Like most things its a compromise. I wouldn't spend the whole budget on the room and have no money left for food or drink or activities.

Weve stayed in an Easyhotel in London before... we were there for a Rugby game in Twickenham, and chose the garish orange shoebox and breakfast in Wetherspoons so we could have a nice dinner out.

But equally we might compromise on scenery etc to get a family suite rather than just two double beds in one room for a family holiday.

Orhe · 05/08/2022 17:33

Agree, on a city break it needs to be in a good location and be really clean with white bedsheets so stains can't be hidden.

Beach / lounging holidays, same as above but with a good breakfast and amenities as we will spend more time at the hotel.

littlefireseverywhere · 05/08/2022 17:34

I totally agree, I’m away with DD for a few days in Devon & we’ve a luxurious air bnb in a great location for 3 nights rather than longer for more time. Loving it!!

TheMoth · 05/08/2022 17:41

For the amount of time I'm actually in the hotel, I'm not overly bothered. Just want separate rooms- 1 for us; 1 for dc. Basic is fine. We're only ever there for breakfast(ideally on a balcony/terrace), to get changed for the evening, then to sleep.

Ducksinthebath · 05/08/2022 17:44

I’m the same. Part of the holiday for me is waking up in lovely surroundings and staying in a nice, preferably interesting, place. And having a good bonk on all the various chairs, chaises and ottomans they fill fancy hotel rooms with. And in the double shower, and the jacuzzi bath…

featheryfancy · 05/08/2022 17:11

I'm with you on this. Why would I pay to stay somewhere worse than home.

This is the complete point. It’s not a holiday in my view if the accommodation is worse than my home. (Exception maybe being camping, but I don’t camp).

GuyMontag · 05/08/2022 17:46

There are certain things I'm not happy without, I agree. Has to be clean, with a good quality mattress, decent shower and air con if I'm somewhere hot. I find that places kept in good nick with regular refurbs are more likely to have these elements in place so if the decor is very outdated it probably won't meet my requirements.

However that's not always a guarantee. I stayed in one place that looked great in the photos and was definitely "modern" but was in fact infested, and by contrast have stayed in a two star that had quite dated furniture and decor but actually the bed was fantastic quality and
