Holiday to think room is important?

Tinkerblonde1 · 05/08/2022 17:04

People say its just a room to sleep in but to me the accommodation actually makes my holiday.

I mean if it was a drunken one night in a dodgy hotel well...I can manage that (just) and have done. Maybe even two at a push but not anything over that.

I can't imagine getting on a plane all excited and the room being a 70-80s shrine when I arrive, this would really put a downer on my holiday. I know that I could stay out all day but I do like to sit, sleep and get ready in something that doesn't look like my Grandma's living room from 86.

My oh thinks I am ridiculous and thinks the money saving is worth it as the price difference would pay for several nights out. I don't agree. For me the accommodation can make or break a holiday. I have always felt like this and so does my sister. Our husbands think we are ridiculous.

I could put up with basic for a night or two if on the way to somewhere good (eg overnight cabin on ferry) but the majority of my holiday will be somewhere nice. I am not going to spend money to go away and stay somewhere that isn't even as good as my own house.

shinynewapple22 · 05/08/2022 19:42

Agree OP - we normally stay in a nice apartment / cottage / villa (garden / balcony / view essential) . I like modern, comfortable furnishings, a well-equipped kitchen (even if I have no intention of cooking ) and plenty of space ! A hotel is fine for a couple of nights but why people want to stay in one room for a fortnight beats me. I don't get the love for AI either - for me, wandering around and choosing where we are going to have our lunch or dinner that day is a big part of our holiday . As is the time we sit relaxing in our garden / on balcony eating something from the local deli. Luckily DH and I have exactly the same views .

Runmybathforme · 05/08/2022 19:44

Really good room with a view is absolutely essential for us. We like a leisurely coffee first thing, and a few drinks on the balcony in the evening .

I'm with you on this. Why would I pay to stay somewhere worse than home.

This is my ethos too. Though it's getting more expensive as my houses are getting nicer 😂

Lemonyfuckit · 05/08/2022 19:47

I agree - I don't want to stay somewhere less nice than my home. Also DP is a terrible sleeper, which then affects my sleep as well, so its important to us to have: large, comfy bed (I want nothing smaller than a king on holiday but ideally a super king), quiet and dark room. Those are the must haves, but ideally also stylish, nice bathroom, nice breakfast (love a good hotel breakfast). But location is important too, ie walking distance to nice places to go for dinner etc. Which I suppose makes me sound really fussy but it's a holiday after all, I don't want to rough it anymore.

@PennyPinkPineapple

Was it nice?

Oh yes it’s really important to me. I hate those rooms were you tumble out of bed straight into the en suite ! My ideal hotel would be a suite with a balcony. Beautiful bed linen, big bathroom with a bath. Exceptionally clean. And great food. I’m yet to find it, but working on it 🤣

holidayhonesty · 05/08/2022 20:02

Agree with the "as nice or nicer than home" gang.

Although it does depend on the type of holiday. I'm not adverse to camping/glamping.

We've done a few eurocamp type holidays with DC and a mobile home is a compromise in some ways but I will always pay for the best I can afford.

Jolinar · 05/08/2022 20:08

Depends on the type of holiday for me. A decent hot shower and a clean, comfortable bed are all I need most of the time as I'm out 8-10 most days when abroad or on a city break. But if I intend to spend a lot time in the room, such a romantic break away then yes, the decor matters.

StoneofDestiny · 05/08/2022 20:17

I would not pay to stay somewhere worse than my home - so I'm with you OP. I prefer luxury and comfort and a shorter stay over a longer stay in a less luxurious hotel room.

LillianGish · 05/08/2022 20:38

It depends entirely on the holiday - on an all-inclusive-not-going-to-stray-much-further-than-the-hotel type holiday I think the room is very important, but if booking a city break where you're out all day sightseeing and out for cocktails and dinner in the evening then less so. Obviously there is limit, but clean and conveniently located would be top of the list of requirements for me - I don't want to pay hundreds of pounds for a suite and a balcony if I'm not going to spend any time there. I'd rather save the money for a nice restaurant or a shopping spree.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 05/08/2022 20:41

I quite like the nostalgia of a shitty 1980s style holiday room lol. The nice ones are lovely too though.

ShitPuffin · 05/08/2022 20:51

I agree, OP. I’d rather stay at home than stay in a crappy room.

thenewduchessoflapland · 05/08/2022 21:16

My prerequisites for a hotel room are space, cleanliness,a comfortable bed and access to wifi.

I couldn't give a monkeys about the decor or if there's a TV in my room.I've stayed in more "modern" hotels that have been cramped, not very clean and uncomfortable.

I stayed in a luxury boutique hotel in Worcester recently that actually wasn't as good as the rooms/food in a little pub cum little hotel in Dorset we stayed in a few weeks earlier.

You can find some right hidden gems out there.

Ponderingwindow · 05/08/2022 21:31

I don’t care much about style, but I care a great deal about function. I want a good mattress, functional plumbing, and accessible outlets for my electronics. Often, those things go hand-in-hand with style changes, but not always.

Maramo · 05/08/2022 21:37

My first holiday abroad in 3 years. I booked and paid extra for the best room. It had a separate sitting room, large terrace and 20m from the beach. It was worth every penny.

mammiaa · 05/08/2022 22:00

chilliesandspices · 05/08/2022 18:03

It depends on how bad we're talking. I remember staying at an IBIS hotel for a wedding and although modern, it was a poky box with a cupboard for a bathroom. I'd rather pay more next time. I'm not too bothered by most other rooms as long as there's space and it's not mouldy or filthy. That being said, DH is currently insisting on an overwater villa for a big holiday to the Maldives. I'm going to enjoy it but I would have been happy with a standard beach villa as I plan to spend most of my time on the beach or in the water. It's going to add an extra 1k to the holiday and I'm not the sort of person who spends 1k total on a holiday normally.

Beach Villa is my personal favourite many times over, it's a lot more private than a water villa , could you suggest a compromise half and half?

Both are lovely though, you'll have a lovely trip!

SisyphusDad · 05/08/2022 22:07

I'm with you up to a point. We're staying in a nice hotel in Devon. I've paid for a decent sized room with separate parts for me and my (older) DSs, but I wasn't prepared to pay the massive extra for rooms with the sea views.

southlondonerhere · 06/08/2022 09:53

I'm with you, and even more important than the bedroom is the bathroom, I need a nice clean modern bathroom and not one where I feel the need to put shoes on everytime I step in it!

PennyPinkPineapple · 06/08/2022 20:46

Tinkerblonde1 · 05/08/2022 19:55

@PennyPinkPineapple

Was it nice?

Yes, basic but comfortable and clean. I've been to that area a few times and stayed in a couple of different places and I'd say that was probably the highest standard of room, although the others were fine too. My favourite is 3 or 4 doors down the road but that's because of the staff not the room. I'd say that area is a bit higher spec than other places in Greece that I've stayed.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/08/2022 20:57

It depends on the type of holiday- I've stayed at a basic but really lovely B&B on a Greek island- big room, comfortable bed , good air con , amazing breakfast

And what was on paper a nice detached villa with pool in Puerto pollensa, terrible beds, 'quirky ' boiler, thin uncomfortable mattresses

I think it's the 'overall' accommodation that matters but yes I think it matters hugely.

Tinkerblonde1 · 06/08/2022 20:59

I have been talking to my sister her reasoning is that our parents made us stay in such old places as kids.

My Grandma and Uncles flat with 1920s furniture and sheets. You know the yellow and pink flannel type of the time. Another, my aunts static caravan where the on-site toilets were fly infested. I mean they did take us to nice places also but these were yearly staple.
