I just don't like the current clothes fashion

I've been on a few clothes-shopping expeditions lately - trying to replenish my Covid-depleted wardrobe - and I've come away virtually empty-handed because I cannot find any clothes I like or which look good on me. I don't know whether my perception is weird, but the current fashion seems to be for women to wear clothing shaped like sacks! Some women look amazing in it, but unfortunately I am not one of them.

Am I being weird about this, or does anyone else wish they could find clothing with some semblance of shape? Even dresses seem to be either shapeless or like something out of Little House on the Prairie!

I'm not very 'girly', but nor do I wish to dress in a duvet cover with holes for the arms and neck 🤔

I've never bothered about fashion, I wear things I like and that I'm comfortable in. Have you tried charity shops? Never know what you find in them.

Batmannequin · 06/08/2022 18:13

I'm dreading the next fashion cycle coming back round. Early to mid 2000's with those god awful hipster jeans? I pray they don't make a comeback. I couldn't get those to look good even when I was a slim 18 year old. I actually love the high waisted jeans right now and I'm in hogs heaven in Primark these days. Maybe I'm just easily pleased when it comes to fashion.

Love a Little House on the Prairie style tiered buffet dress but was asked yesterday 'Have you lost your sheep?' Cheeky bugger!

Eeksteek · 06/08/2022 18:14

It’s this sort of thing I can’t get over. If you had given me this at four years old I would have gone naked rather than wear it. Yet I have seen actual adult humans wearing similar. Bizarre. Who wants to look like a life sized doll?! It’s just indescribably awful. I’ll take the linen sacks.

I hate fashion. It’s the reason I learnt to sew (fairly badly) at least then I don’t have to look like a four year old or a bag of flour.

Bother. Forgot the pic.

I just don't like the current clothes fashion

That made me smile.

Love it!

Possibly a change in where you buy clothes from?
IMO the likes of New Look, H&M, Zara aim for younger women... I've defo outgrown those brands now, Next and (some) M&S cater more for my taste. But styles have changed which are larger fitting - just buy the next size down?
I've recently swapped all my skinny jeans for Mom jeans and they're so much more flattering.
If you have the budget to spend a bit more Ted Baker, Phase Eight, Jules are always smart, well fitting and great quality too.

Mummadeze · 06/08/2022 18:56

I am overweight and have been wearing an oversized, floaty, cheesecloth dress from M&S that doesn’t cling anywhere. I am grateful to be hidden under the swaths of fabric and at least 6 people have said how nice it looks. I wasn’t convinced at first, but I feel good in it now.

Chuck2015 · 06/08/2022 19:06

I literally only buy second hand and Uniqlo now, I hear you !

Redshell1976 · 06/08/2022 19:11

I feel like I can’t find anything I like anymore, it’s all dreadfully drab and badly fitting……

duffeldaisy · 06/08/2022 19:15

My problem is the fabric type. I went into Primark the week of the heatwave, and all the summer clothes were made of recycled plastic, and felt really uncomfortable (I'm really sensitive to touch, which sounds so precious, but I genuinely am when it comes to textures).
All I was looking for was something more polycotton, something cool but soft. And all the was was scratchy linen or uncomfy-feeling recycled plastic clothing.
I know recycling's important - but as someone who mainly buys second-hand, it's not like I'm contributing to fast fashion much - I'd just like an item or two that's new every so often and that feels comfortable and will last.

This look was fashionable in 1978, I was a tween and slim, then again in 00s and I could wear it then but not keen now as a 50 something

Mythreefavouritethings · 06/08/2022 19:24

I quite like the puff sleeve, tiered dresses that are everywhere and have been for the last couple of years but I agree wholeheartedly, OP, if it's in one shop, it's in all of them so you end up with a variation on a theme. It would be good if it went back to different styles in different shops but when I browse, I find I can barely tell the difference between stores (including quality).

Hm2020 · 06/08/2022 19:45

This is the first season I’ve happily bought clothes for about 3 years I’ve been buying lots of midi dresses.

Missingpop · 06/08/2022 19:49

I be love your description of todays clothing 😂 it’s spot on I’m a cuddly shaped lady just hit 50 & todays clothing leaves me feeling like I will never look womanly ever again; I too have taken to buying from Shein the clothes are cheaper & aren’t to bad in quality I tend to buy a larger size then nip & tuck it to fit my shape. Take a look it’s well worth it x Good luck fellow duvet dress hater x

queenMab99 · 06/08/2022 20:05

I am tall, fat and 72, I love baggy linen tops, oversized sweatshirts, and loose trousers. 😎

Borisisafecklesstoad · 06/08/2022 20:49

I made a pledge not to buy anything new this year. Made for environmental reasons but stuck to it for financial reasons.

I love charity shops but dont have the time to search...I would look at vinted. Stick to the stores and labels that you know, eg i know a warehouse/phase eight 12 will fit me and keep my searches within that range. Also whack it back on if it doesn't fit. Amazing site!

Wexone · 06/08/2022 20:54

@Maireas because people buy online and are too lazy to return it via post or they buy it with full intentions of loosing weight etc. some people have loads of clothes sitting in their wardrobes with tags on for ages. lots of reasons why

Snog · 06/08/2022 20:56

I ❤️ puff sleeves, balloon sleeves, tiered dresses, prairie dresses, dungarees.

I don't like wearing things that are tight at the waist. I don't like looking stereotypically "sexy" or agonising about whether I'm wearing the most "flattering" shapes or colours or cuts. I'm not trying to look slim. Just looking for comfortable clothes in comfortable fabrics that I like. I don't need to please anyone else with what I wear. Maybe this is more like how young kids choose their clothes. It feels freeing to dress like this and also fun.

Rosehugger · 06/08/2022 21:08

Where are you shopping? I bought four dresses from TU recently, loads of good quality cotton tops, shorts and linen trousers from M&S, and even got a skirt in the sale from Mango in John Lewis. Also two tops in the Monsoon sale and a top from Baukjen. There were loads of other things I could have bought.

Corcory · 06/08/2022 21:14

I've been buying from Weird Fish, Monsoon, White Stuff and Sea Salt in their sales a lot. Most of my clothes are Weird Fish though. Get extra discounts through quite often so good value.

simiisme · 06/08/2022 21:26

You look great!
I'd, sadly, look like Miss Trunchbull!

3plusonekids · 06/08/2022 21:56

Get yourself to Zara. They genuinely have something for everyone in my opinion whilst always staying on trend!
also… I’ve now embraced the ‘Mom’ jean. So much more comfortable than the skinny!

I have resorted to Shein. I’m not exactly happy about it as I’ve never been a fan of fast fashion, but needs must - I needed new smart(ish) tops for work (as my role has changed and I’m now more ‘in the public eye’) as well as some summer clothes and had exhausted myself trying to find stuff on the high street.

There is an awful lot of dross on there, but if you can bear scrolling for an hour or so you’ll find stuff you like. Also the photos of real people actually wearing the clothes they have purchased helps a lot.

I managed to buy 8 tops and 3 dresses for less than £100, and all bar one fit well and look good enough on me (and not a sack in sight!)

I'm wary about buying anything that may hail from China as I worry about the Chinese government's treatment of Uighurs and Christians.
