I just don't like the current clothes fashion

I've been on a few clothes-shopping expeditions lately - trying to replenish my Covid-depleted wardrobe - and I've come away virtually empty-handed because I cannot find any clothes I like or which look good on me. I don't know whether my perception is weird, but the current fashion seems to be for women to wear clothing shaped like sacks! Some women look amazing in it, but unfortunately I am not one of them.

Am I being weird about this, or does anyone else wish they could find clothing with some semblance of shape? Even dresses seem to be either shapeless or like something out of Little House on the Prairie!

I'm not very 'girly', but nor do I wish to dress in a duvet cover with holes for the arms and neck 🤔

I agree. Lovely if you’re tall and willowy. I’m slim but have short legs, those things just make me look like a bag of sand.

I don’t like shopping for clothes in normal shops and gave up years ago. Fabrics are often awful, and they’re too expensive for what they are. All my clothes are second hand from charity shops. For me, it’s the easiest way. There are four within ten minutes’ walk, and they’re really good shops. Sometimes there’s nothing I want. Last week, though, I bought a beautiful pair of loose denim trousers, a cream silk shirt, and a merino and cashmere loose jumper- all in pristine condition and really good makes/designer. I spent £40 -this was from the most expensive charity shop.

I'm not too keen on linen, but I think there are tons of lovely dresses around right now. I like that maxi and midi dresses are so fashionable as they hide my 'not so perfect' legs and I was spoilt for choice in Mint Velvet and Hush- I might have bought far too many this summer...oops! Some are loose and great for holidays abroad, others are more fitted at he top and waist with a full floaty skirt.

I'm also enjoying the return of looser jeans and bootcut- although am not feeling the return of low waistbands! 😵

BrightYellowDaffodil · 05/08/2022 06:47

YANBU. The current trend for the “Little House on the Prairie” look does nothing for me because I’m short - I’m slim but even so, the endless ruffles and puff sleeves make me look like an over-upholstered weeble.

And the colours! Why is everything a varying shade of sludge?

DashboardConfessional · 05/08/2022 06:54

YANBU. Uniqlo is often my go-to and yep - shapeless sack dresses.

I'm buying a lot on eBay by searching by brand. H&M jeans are currently good.

I just don't like the current clothes fashion

I have resorted to Shein. I’m not exactly happy about it as I’ve never been a fan of fast fashion, but needs must - I needed new smart(ish) tops for work (as my role has changed and I’m now more ‘in the public eye’) as well as some summer clothes and had exhausted myself trying to find stuff on the high street.

There is an awful lot of dross on there, but if you can bear scrolling for an hour or so you’ll find stuff you like. Also the photos of real people actually wearing the clothes they have purchased helps a lot.

I managed to buy 8 tops and 3 dresses for less than £100, and all bar one fit well and look good enough on me (and not a sack in sight!)

Shein isn’t just “fast fashion” it’s Chinese sweatshop fast fashion. Almost anyone else would be slightly less unethical.

Maireas · 05/08/2022 07:01

I know what you mean, @BarbaraofSeville - I don't buy online because I like to see the colour and fabric and test the fit.
I think it's problematic, miles away from the heyday of the British high street in the 80s. The colours are dull, the quality poor and I've no intention of wearing a polyester monstrosity that would only look good on a 12 year old Laura Ingalls. The trick is to find your own style - I've bought relaxed but fitted jackets from M&S (oh yes) and also their trousers and tops are good. When you have time, rifle through tkmaxx - ye gods they have a lot of tat, but you can find some gems. The charity shops near me don't have any nice stuff.

Maireas · 05/08/2022 07:02

Also - jumpsuits rarely look good and are not practical!

BreakerOfBras · 05/08/2022 07:04

I'm hating clothes shopping at the moment, being plus size - although I do appreciate more brands are branching into plus sizes. I can never find anything in my size in high street shops though, and buy absolutely everything on Binged or Simply Be at the moment. Shame - I miss shopping in actual shops.

balalake · 05/08/2022 07:05

I often wonder if those who start fashions do so as a kind of practical joke.

Tidypidy · 05/08/2022 07:05

I've found lots of nice basic bits in sainsburys. Good quality and reasonable prices.

Tidypidy · 05/08/2022 07:07

Also Bon Marché. It's not all pleated skirts and floral blouses! I'm size 18 and short and they have lots of different leg lengths in trousers. Good mix of smart and casual.

RedRobyn2021 · 05/08/2022 07:08

Me too!!

I went shopping for the first time a few months ago and I thought I was in an alternate reality, all the dresses were huge with granny flowers all over them and absolutely did not suit me.

Couldn't find a thing. Felt really old and I'm only 31.

Men. Who have no idea of the female shape. Or women who are teeny tiny and/or don't mind things being see through.
I don't want to wear transparent clothing, I don't know why it's impossible to buy a plain white cotton t-shirt or a cotton skirt that isn't completely see through.

I’ve often seen people mentioning supermarket clothes, but supermarkets near me don’t sell clothes. They sell a few socks, and some school uniform stuff at certain times of year, but there are no clothes as such. Maybe it depends where you live.

schnubbins · 05/08/2022 07:17

I was shopping here in Munich last week and it struck me while walking around that mostly everyone looked badly dressed even the young and lithe. The only well dressed women were over the age of 70 .It was the first time I have ever thought that in all my years of living here.

alwaysfactor50 · 05/08/2022 07:18

My teens are really struggling too. We went to primark the other day and there was nothing that they liked at all. My youngest doesn't want to wear luminous tight stuff!!

KangarooKenny · 05/08/2022 07:21

I’ve bought M&S knickers for as long as I can remember. Recently bought another pack and I was shocked at the thinness of the material, and they were slightly smaller than previous. Time to find some new ones.

Jourdain11 · 05/08/2022 00:48

Genuinely curious - what are you buying? And where from?

The long flowing floaty stuff derided by PP! Also longish tailored stuff.
I've always worn long skirts - hard to come by previously and dresses were non-existent. I find trousers uncomfortable mostly. Everything was just below the knee - a terrible length for me - or shorter. Now I'm spoilt for choice. As for PP comments about boring colours - no, just no. I'm finally finding I can have any colour under the sun after years of navy, black, khaki if I'm very lucky. I have bought so many dresses in the last couple of years. Stocking up ready for the years of drought that will surely return.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 05/08/2022 07:22

I must be the odd one out, because if took me a while but I'm loving current cuts and styles and am finding more to buy than I need or can afford!

I love high waists and loose cropped trousers. I love midi dresses and unfitted 'sack' like styles. I love jumpsuits and dungarees.

I'm the first to admit that this stuff isn't flattering... but why should everything be flattering? ie make me look as slim and sexy as possible? I don't care about performing femininity for other people, I want to wear things that are fun and comfortable and a bit different.

(My one complaint is that a lot of things are badly made and in horrible fabrics - solved by shopping on Vinted for brands I couldn't usually afford and being fussy about fabrics. Made easier because not everything has to be super fitted!)

Thefruitbatdancer · 05/08/2022 07:24

Newlife charity shop was mentioned on mnet style & beauty. They recycle seconds and last season clothes from well known brands. They remove labels before selling them but you can usually work out the origin.

PuppyMonkey · 05/08/2022 07:28

If it’s any consolation OP, I don’t think ANYONE looks good in the current styles. Even the models in the photos look ridiculous.Grin

I don’t know why people are talking about “floaty” - that sounds quite nice. The current floral three tiered tent looks are more like balloony.Confused

LizzieSiddal · 05/08/2022 07:30

I too am loving the current styles, I’m quite short, big busted and slim and am living in midi dresses, however I’ve not bought “sacks”. I have bought v necks, always all cotton with fitted waist/belts. They are so cool and comfortable.

midgetastic · 05/08/2022 07:30

I managed to drop from. 12 to an 8 in the sack tops to get something to work for me

I favour comfort and practical over style but it's not performance femininity - the sack tops hang much worse on curvy people - I don't need to look great and thin but I also don't want to look obese either

Bonheurdupasse · 05/08/2022 07:32

@JofraArchersFastestBall

two things I’d say back:

  • surely there should be some choice. 10% of clothes should be for the majority, who don’t actually like this sack fashion

  • you describe flattering as “make me look slim and sexy”. That sounds like enhancing clothing, like my padded bras :). No, all I want is clothes that don’t make me look worse than I am. I’m not actually shaped like a sack!
