19 year DS has been home from uni since June and has not been able to get any work, it’s really getting me down
he has applied for loads of jobs on indeed but only very few applications are viewed and. only a few have responded

Its really becoming an issue for me as i can see he is losing confidence, and i just feel like he’s wasting his summer ,,,

How can i help him get some work until uni starts in late September?

Tia

My DD is waiting for her A level results and has just got a summer job at Clarks shoes covering the back-to-school rush. Applied via their website. If she does ok, they'll have her back for Christmas/Easter and/or try and get a transfer to one near her uni.

Uni student summer jobs usually take applications in April/May. So if he waited until he was home in June, all the good jobs will have been taken before he even started applying.

He really should be planning better and looking for a job related to his degree/prospective career field. i agree he should research potential employers and go to their websites for openings. You can’t really use Indeed because most employers don’t put summer jobs on there due to the fees.

There’s no point working food service or retail unless it’s money he wants, rather than experience for his CV. If money isn’t an issue, he could look into volunteering still at a place degree/career related?

I got two voluntary roles related to my degree/career interests (one has since been upgraded to paid) instead of regular retail/bar work and got slated for it on here. Just goes to show you really can't please everyone.

I had the same issue 5 years ago when I was a student. I really advise you to hurry him up and engage not to lose heart after another rejection. There are a lot of online vacancies, that can be combined with the university. I recently found one part-time job in a temp agency https://jobssite.ca/ . The other benefit of working online is that usually only you decide how much you want to work and when you have to do it. Of course, there are some deadlines, but such a job will be good paid for sure!

We would have bitten his hand off back at the end of term. We were in desperate need of bar staff and someone to do housekeeping tasks like sweeping patios and watering tubs and baskets.

However, he would have needed to show initiative by finding our advert on social media or in our front window, following the instructions and either coming in with his CV or making a phone call.

We would have paid NLW and, if he was any good once we'd knocked the corners off him, we would have had him back then every time he came home.

Oh gosh really?!? What size town are you in? I would try directly going into all coffee shops he could commute to, every single one is recruiting here. Pret pay well and have good conditions comparatively if you have one those local. Also all the hotels and sports clubs are recruiting here.

Agree re temp agencies.

I thought my son was going to be in this position. He went on holiday with his friends after alevels.and, even though we live in a touristy area, when he got back there were no summer job adverts. He has been doing nothing for the last week and it was bugging me but amazingly, a temp job just came up at sainsburys and he has got it. So my advice is to look at all the company job pages and to keep looking as things come up all the time. Also make sure he has examples in his head of where he has helped people/gone the extra mile/worked as a team etc

People in real life: "My child's worked hard for weeks on exams/coursework, nothing wrong with letting them chill for a bit."

People on Mumsnet: "DS/DD just got back from uni and have done f* all for the past 2 days! Just applied for a few Indeed jobs which isn't good enough! I expected them to go from the train station straight to their first shift when they got back but instead they got back and sat on the sofa!"

"Oh, and while I'm at it, should I divorce DH? He contributes financially, hoovers, takes kids to school, etc. BUT he only washes up once a week. That's 6 days a week I'm doing the dishes while he plonks his lazy arse on the sofa. Surely it wouldn't be unreasonable to end a marriage for this travesty?!?!?"

You do realise that each and every one of us posting on here, has a 'real life', as you call it ?

That we are all individuals with different lives and differently motivated dc ?

If he can get a job at a supermarket they let you transfer between your home supermarket and your uni supermarket throughout your degree. My son works at sainsburys at home full time whenever he’s back from uni and then part time at sainsburys near his uni during term time. It really is the best way to go; altho I appreciate he has to get the job in the first place

I8toys · 06/08/2022 19:37

My DS 18 back home from uni has a job in a call centre dealing with customer complaints. Try transport companies or large organisations that advertise their jobs. Some advertise for students working the summer in call centres.

Squishybean · 06/08/2022 19:42

At his age its best to just print off his CV and go around local cafes, restaurants, pubs, supermarkets or whatever in person and ask if they are looking for staff.

Job websites rarely advertise jobs suitable for short term employment and 16 year olds.
Its common sense

sarah291260 · 07/08/2022 10:17

Has he tried something like High Society in London/ selective personnel in Scotland? Very flexible hours and hire with no experience.

Jarstastic · 07/08/2022 13:39

PGL, Haven etc seem desperate for staff. 16+. from 18, they can live in for a reasonable cost so they can go to centres across the country.

No

Why did you bump a thread 10 months old to write a sniffy "No" ?
