Munichfam5 · 04/08/2022 20:58

19 year DS has been home from uni since June and has not been able to get any work, it’s really getting me down
he has applied for loads of jobs on indeed but only very few applications are viewed and. only a few have responded

Its really becoming an issue for me as i can see he is losing confidence, and i just feel like he’s wasting his summer ,,,

How can i help him get some work until uni starts in late September?

Tia

Dc has had a job since 16 working at home bargains. They take on lots of young staff. They also allow students to work at different shops (so can work term time at uni hb and holidays at home hb)
Also dc did volunteer work which let to some paid work could that be a possibility?
Small companies also don't want to pay for advertising of Jobs so may do on local social media.

FannyFifer · 04/08/2022 21:41

My son has also applied for absolutely anything & everything. Pretty much got zero response from anywhere, not even thanks for CV or we got ur application.
He has quite an unusual name so we wondered if that was the issue.
It's a wee shame, a job wld really improve his confidence.

diamondpony80 · 04/08/2022 21:42

Online applications are a waste of time and will probably be ignored. DS and his friends all got their jobs by going round local businesses with their CVs, or through friends/family. Can he get any of his friends to put in a recommendation for him wherever they are working?

Violettaa · 04/08/2022 21:46

Every bar and cafe round me has a ‘help wanted sign’. I spoke to one of the waitstaff in one and she told me that they’re recruiting 16 year olds straight after GCSEs for the first time because they’re so desperate.

I think if you’re halfway sensible and presentable and walk through the door, you’d be hired on the spot.

This is London nappy valley, so I appreciate it might not be the same everywhere.

rwalker · 04/08/2022 21:49

Type of job he's after he'll have more chance going and asking and handing CV's out .

Blueskythinking123 · 04/08/2022 21:50

I echo others on here. He needs to look directly at company sites. My DC have got all their casual jobs direct, never via Indeed.

Next is another one that is usually looking for staff at the moment. You apply direct on the site.

GetOffTheRoof · 04/08/2022 21:53

Yep, he gets off his arse abs walks into shops, pubs, restaurants and asks if he can apply for any work.

Especially any hospitality work - round by me they'd snap his hand off unless he's clearly going to waste their time.

SunshineLoving · 04/08/2022 21:54

Apply on websites directly, e.g. shops like Boots and Asda.

Hand out his CV to local businesses, especially restaurants and cafes.

Does he drive? There are always plenty of delivery driver jobs for takeaways.

Factories/distribution centres near you? Lots of jobs at the factories near me.

Gherkingreen · 04/08/2022 21:59

Be careful applying for food delivery jobs as they'd need to get additional insurance and it's ££.
Indeed can (and has in DS') case work, it's how he got his fast food job.
He's also done a couple of half day trial shifts at cafes/bars and then not heard back at all, not even so much as a thanks but no thanks. Just rude.
Some employers need to treat these young people with a lot more respect.

Superbabe64 · 04/08/2022 22:01

Local pubs, restaurants, cafes, landscaping companies etc? DS has worked in local pub every summer holiday whilst at uni. Most pubs, restaurants and cafes are crying out for staff.

EntertainingandFactual · 04/08/2022 22:05

I wrote a post a while back saying exactly the same thing OP!

My DC applied for so many jobs through Indeed - supermarkets, shops, bars, cafes. Nothing. No response whatsoever from most and 'computer says no' response from some.
They (and I) were getting really frustrated and confused!

One of their friends told them that if something comes up on indeed, don't apply through them - search for the job on the company website , apply to the company directly and as a back up drop a CV in at the shop / bar / restaurant / organisation they are applying to.

My DC have now got P/T jobs in shops in the city centre after months of no luck.

ManateeFair · 04/08/2022 22:08

Looking at your post, it’s not really about your son.

It’s getting YOU down
It’s becoming an issue for YOU
YOU feel like he’s wasting his summer
What can YOU do to get him a job

He is an adult. If he wants to get a job he needs to pull his finger out and do something other than filling in online applications on Indeed. He needs to go out into town and ask around, phone up places on spec, sign up with temping agencies etc. And he needs to do that himself, without you getting involved.

When I worked in bars and hotels, every summer parents would come in with their student/teen kids in tow and say “My child is looking for a summer job, do you have anything?” to which the answer would usually be “Not for someone who doesn’t come in here on their own and ask for themselves.” We’d never have employed someone who was clearly being pushed by their mum; we needed people who were keen enough and mature enough to sort things out for themselves.

houselikeashed · 04/08/2022 22:09

DD (17) applied for a local job on Indeed and was rejected.
2 weeks later, she went into the place to ask of they were still hiring, and started work the next day. Indeed is not the way to get a summer job. Last year she worked at a local hotel, also by going in and asking.
DS got a job where one of his mattes was working.
OP - Do any of his mates have jobs?

EntertainingandFactual · 04/08/2022 22:10

@Gherkingreen
Same! Mine did a 4 hr UNPAID trial shift at a local cafe over bank holiday weekend. At the end of the shift they said that they would be in touch - they didn't ever call, text or e-mail.
It's unbelievable.
This particular place are always advertising for staff... I wonder why?!

He needs to pull his finger out and look directly on each company's website. Of course, it does depend on where you live but unless you live in the middle of nowhere, he should be able to find something.

Factory/warehouse jobs.

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's - they all have loads of jobs.

McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, any fast food restaurant or takeaway.

Pop in local pubs, bars, restaurants, cafes.

Hospitality recruitment agencies where you can do the odd bar/waiting shift. They do events like gigs, football matches, festivals, etc. Agencies like Arc Hospitality Recruitment, Hap, there will be others.

This.

Unless you are going to drip feed you live on a remote island, or he is unable to be in the same room as any other people, I find it odd he can't get work.
Virtually everywhere you go have 'staff wanted' signs up.
Local facebook groups also have posts looking for staff.
Asking friends.

What has he got on his CV ? / What has he worked at before ?

Drivebye · 04/08/2022 22:14

In this market my DC would not be doing unpaid shifts. They need to walk away from this, there are so many jobs out there, it is an employees market.

What has your DS told you about his efforts OP? I am very surprised he hasn't secured anything. How much money are you giving him? Is it just a bit too comfortable at home/uni and he can get away with not earning?

girlfrien · 04/08/2022 22:14

Do you live near any Warner hotels? Loads of students work at them.

AvocadosAreTheDevil · 04/08/2022 22:15

Get him to check directly on the website of local football grounds, they are always looking for bar staff on match days. It's not much, but it's something. Equally the likes of McDonalds, try on their main website and they have the added bonus of you can work (zero hours) between two stores. Your home and university store, when you're available. Helping to top up the Uni beer fund!

EntertainingandFactual · 04/08/2022 22:16

@ManateeFair
Whilst I agree that teenagers are capable of searching & applying for jobs proactively, MANY vacancies are filled through contacts.
They make contact through friends, relatives, neighbours and yes... shock, horror, even parents.
They are given a leg up.
Nothing wrong with the OP wanting to help her DC.

ForestofD · 04/08/2022 22:33

Apply direct. Indeed have changed the way they operate, so my company doesn't look at them at all now- we don't even use the free listings anymore.

Look on local Facebook pages- I got my daughters friend a job in the local ice cream parlour that was listed in our local F/B page.

Hospitality would take him a million times over if he has a good work ethic. We are so busy during weddings we employ someone to wash and polish glasses for whole shifts. Boring yes, but they can put their music on and just get on with it and they get paid above minimum wage. Bar, kitchen, washing up- every single job is filled this year by students wanting to earn as much money as possible for the summer.

manlyago · 04/08/2022 22:36

Agree with the handing a CV in. That’s how my kids have got summer jobs. Introducing themselves and handing a CV in.

RainingYetAgain · 04/08/2022 22:40

DS did a Food Hygeine Course run by the local authority, and had 3 requests for his cv by lunch and a phone call that evening asking him to interview at a Bistro. He worked for them during Uni holidays and when he first left Uni.

ThinWomansBrain · 04/08/2022 22:40

nearly every pub and restuarant near me have signs up asking for staff - adn quite a lot of shops too.
I was having lunch the other day & somoenone popped in & asked if he could leave a CV - they nabbed him immediately & the poor guy couldn't get out.

TheLostNights · 04/08/2022 22:40

Temp agency in areas such as hospitality is what has worked for some of my friends kids who have been at uni and in similar situations

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 04/08/2022 22:41

Both my children printed off their CVs and went around town and out of town on day trips.
One got a job in a shop on the high street the other got a job in a gastropub.

The fact that they'd physically walked into a business , apparently, spoke volumes.
It took a while but it worked.

They were both on Indeed and got nothing.
