To think we won’t get a property like this for under £300,000

DH says we should move. I agree however the kind of house we want seems unrealistic to me.

Old farmhouse - 3 bedrooms, no neighbours. Countryside. About 1acre of land.

for £300,000?? Not going to happen is it?

East Yorkshire

My budget is £900k and I can't find one! Your wishlist is the same as ours. But I'm in the Midlands.

A580Hojas · 04/08/2022 18:15

Have you heard of Right Move? Why don't you show him? The vast majority of Mumsnetters won't know anything about property prices in East Yorkshire.

May well be doable if you are prepared/able to move far enough. But depending what you both do you may then find that the local job market doesn’t pay enough, or your skills aren’t in demand.

Scotland

Wales

MichaelAndEagle · 04/08/2022 18:26

I think it depends how rural you are prepared to be to be honest.

BakedTattie · 04/08/2022 18:29

Where I am specifically, (in south east Scotland) that would cost you close to a million. But I live in a very very sought after area.

not sure about the area you are looking

LarchFairy · 04/08/2022 18:35

Of course you can in East Yorkshire or south of the river. Those sorts of places won't come up often but you are in the right part of the coutry price wise.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 04/08/2022 18:39

Love that house I'm Tregaron. Lovely part of the world too.

Wombat27A · 04/08/2022 18:42

Bit of a medical desert tho.

Sounds an ideal wishlist tho.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 04/08/2022 18:45

That's exactly what we're looking for. We're in West Yorkshire and there's nothing like that for at least double that budget. We absolutely can't afford it.
We paid £400k last year for a period semi detached Georgian farm house with a reasonable garden. Needs a full refurb too. Wish we'd not bothered buying it.

When we were looking we did see a large detached rural property in East Yorkshire for around £375k. We decided it was too far away but we're kicking ourselves now.

Louise0701 · 04/08/2022 18:51

Not a chance. The poster who thinks it’s possible just because it’s Yorkshire is

  1. definitely deluded

  2. definitely a southerner

That's what's stopping us downsizing and moving to the hinterland.
We had plans to retire to West Wales pre-Covid, and to free up a bit of cash in so doing. However we've hit our sixties and DH has been diagnosed with cancer. It's made us think again about where we should retire to.

tiggergoesbounce · 04/08/2022 18:56

Sadly, absolutely no chance really.
If any do pop up, they will not go for £300k even if they are starting there.

I do think the house prices are going to drop, so keep your eye out.

Calmdown14 · 04/08/2022 19:01

I'm in one of the cheapest parts of Scotland. You could get a lovely 4 bed house on a decent plot....but definitely not an acre.

You'd need another 100k for that

Calmdown14 · 04/08/2022 19:04

Two bed is closest I can get but it's rather lovely

Nope. I live in East Yorkshire

Orangesare · 04/08/2022 19:07

East Yorkshire prices have shot up.
mare you eligible for agricultural properties as they tend to be a bit cheaper?
I mean the ones with the agricultural tie

fyn · 04/08/2022 19:26

Very unlikely now unless you are going for a Croft on one of the more remote islands. There is a Facebook group called ‘Farms, Crofts, Smallholdings, Farmland and Forests for Sale’ which you’ll have better luck with than rightmove.

Also www.uklandandfarms.co.uk and zoopla are more likely to have what you are looking for. When I worked for as a land agent doing farm and small holding sales we’d use those, Rightmove is far too expensive for small farm agents.

LaurieFairyCake · 04/08/2022 19:41

Um.... those links point to a house without an actual garden in Hull

And a house overlooking a paddock that doesn't come with the paddock ...

I bought a farmhouse in January, 2 acres of land, large steading 300k. Needs some updating but nothing major. Aberdeenshire here.

GiantSpaceHamster · 04/08/2022 19:57

Teeny tiny garden… with plastic grass! I don’t think that’s even close to OP’s wish list!

Do you think that will stop them from having an opinion???
