To be starting to really worry about Liz Truss

OK, so I'm not a Tory. I hate Boris, and despise the rest of them. I don't hold or much hope of any of them actually doing anything to address the problems that we're currently facing, because I don't think any of them actually give a toss about ordinary people. Of the two candidates that are left in the Tory leadership contest, I would pick Rishi, because I think he has a more realistic understanding of the economic challenges, but obviously, I'm not a party member so I have no say in the matter.

Nevertheless, I have been relatively sanguine and the prospect of Liz Truss as leader, a) because I figured that things couldn't get much worse than the shit show that we have had under Boris, and b) because I am pretty sure that she will be utterly unelectable when it comes to the next general election, so worst case scenario would be that we have another couple of years of crappy Tory government, exacerbated by the cost of living crisis, and then we can be pretty confident of getting shot of them. So, pretty shit all in all, but survivable.

But listening to everything that she is saying she wants to do, to the economic forecasts, and to the analysis from both within and beyond the Tory party, I'm starting to get really very worried. All this talk of huge tax cuts and massive reductions in public spending...I fear that she is going to make the looming economic crisis infinitely worse at a time when we can least afford to risk it. Nearly all economists seem to agree that her plans are going to make things worse, not better.

We are already at breaking point. Public services are on their knees. Businesses are struggling to stay afloat. People both in work and out of work are struggling. The most vulnerable are already having to choose between bare essentials such as eating and heating. Inflation continues to soar, energy prices are going off the scale, interest rates are going up... and she is about to make it worse! We just don't have the resilience in the system to cope with this.

I am actually very worried about what is going to happen. This could be very bad indeed, and a lot of people are going to suffer. If we end up with austerity on steroids in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis, there will be massive civil unrest, surely?

In answer to a specific question, yes I'd watch RT when it was available in the UK and Al Jazeera and a Chinese state backed broadcaster as well as French and German broadcasters. Not frequently for long periods but useful. Hasn't stopped BBC R4 being the main source of news.

Curious though Dalint - I'm not the thread police but are you simultaneously a Labour voter/supported and someone who let their Conservative and Unionist membership lapse after an annoying reply from your MP and regretted not having a vote? Very Churchillian.

Zilla1 · 22/08/2022 17:12

FWIW, I understand the statistics (which I realise can be like swimwear) show the UK as an outlier amongst comparable economies and not always in good ways - highest inflation, lowest productivity and lowest growth. Growth can sometimes mislead as catastrophic falls can then lead to rebound rises that unscrupulous governments to say 'we're No1 for growth' but long term trends in growth are a more reliable indicator of economic performance.

OK so now posters are rocking up to tell everyone they are ‘moaning’ at a time of national crisis, yet these same posters can’t provide even one credible source to back up their claims… Hmm

That is me. I joined as I feared they would boot Boris out in Jan and I feared further lockdowns. I lasted 6 weeks. 😁

Dalint · 22/08/2022 17:59

I left the party when I discovered that it's full of utterly insane nutters who believe in white privilege. I nearly fucking blew a steam hole through the roof reading what one twat had written.

Dalint · 22/08/2022 18:00

I am not biased. I'll get into bed with anyone whose policies I like. I'm a voting whore haha.

Zilla1 · 22/08/2022 18:02

Honest. Arguably more self aware than the vote for self interest but pretends that identifies with the public good.

Dalint · 22/08/2022 18:03

I also wanted to be this lady but never even got a chance to go one party party

Unfortunately, not many Westerners seek out news from outside their own country. I do. I speak a few languages too so like to guage the mood on the ground in different countries. What concerns one country doesn't always concern another country. I don't even trust one news outlet here generally. I usually read multiple sources. I have now put a media blackout in force though as everything just fucking depresses me!

Hint: he was the chairperson for the Conservative party at the time.

Same here, I used to trust the BBC but no more. And whilst I used to think I was very well informed about what’s going on in this country, for the sake of my mental health, I restrict the news nowadays.

I'm like a teenager these days. Tiktok is my news source. Even some extremely educated people in my extended family have conceded that a tiktok video is the the longest they can focus these days. Maybe we're all developing brain damage haha.

It will be a great day when you finally get a job blossom, in the meantime no doubt you will be LP cheerleading endlessly on here regardless of how crap they are.

Blossomtoes · 22/08/2022 19:36

I had a job for 48 years. Too old now. 😂

Did anyone see Labour MP Barry Gardiner almost in tears at an interview today? He spoke from he heart, and with honesty. The rally was called Enough is enough, I believe.

Were seeing two potential Tory leaders parading themselves about how right wing they will be whilst a tiny proportion of the country gets a say in it.

I didn't, but I do like someone with heart. Do you know what channel it was on and I'll look it up?

Mumsnetters love to catastrophise about politics but it’ll be fine. Tax cuts benefit all of us

They benefit the richest the most. Surely that’s self evident.

I found it on YouTube

Sporty2022 · 22/08/2022 21:24

Truss must be deluded. How on earth does she think the country will cope? She’s not going to help with ‘handouts’ for energy and is going to give rich people tax cuts.

How is this complete shit show allowed? What about humanity for people?

Companies paying bosses millions whilst workers can’t afford to hear their homes. It’s absolutely disgraceful. When did thing go so wrong?

What about those who don’t earn enough to pay tax?
