To be starting to really worry about Liz Truss

OK, so I'm not a Tory. I hate Boris, and despise the rest of them. I don't hold or much hope of any of them actually doing anything to address the problems that we're currently facing, because I don't think any of them actually give a toss about ordinary people. Of the two candidates that are left in the Tory leadership contest, I would pick Rishi, because I think he has a more realistic understanding of the economic challenges, but obviously, I'm not a party member so I have no say in the matter.

Nevertheless, I have been relatively sanguine and the prospect of Liz Truss as leader, a) because I figured that things couldn't get much worse than the shit show that we have had under Boris, and b) because I am pretty sure that she will be utterly unelectable when it comes to the next general election, so worst case scenario would be that we have another couple of years of crappy Tory government, exacerbated by the cost of living crisis, and then we can be pretty confident of getting shot of them. So, pretty shit all in all, but survivable.

But listening to everything that she is saying she wants to do, to the economic forecasts, and to the analysis from both within and beyond the Tory party, I'm starting to get really very worried. All this talk of huge tax cuts and massive reductions in public spending...I fear that she is going to make the looming economic crisis infinitely worse at a time when we can least afford to risk it. Nearly all economists seem to agree that her plans are going to make things worse, not better.

We are already at breaking point. Public services are on their knees. Businesses are struggling to stay afloat. People both in work and out of work are struggling. The most vulnerable are already having to choose between bare essentials such as eating and heating. Inflation continues to soar, energy prices are going off the scale, interest rates are going up... and she is about to make it worse! We just don't have the resilience in the system to cope with this.

I am actually very worried about what is going to happen. This could be very bad indeed, and a lot of people are going to suffer. If we end up with austerity on steroids in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis, there will be massive civil unrest, surely?

Sunak has delivered generous budgets to businesses during covid. Furlough for example. People remember and only think of themselves. People don't generally think about their next door neighbour.

Dalint · 21/08/2022 13:55

It's £2.99 per month to join the Conservatives.

I don't even know about this. I would say that I'm probably more informed than most though!

I’m genuinely not being rude but you’re not very well informed if you didn’t notice this. Sunak stole Labour’s energy windfall tax in May. Starmer announced the proposed energy price cap freeze last week and reaction to it has been polled over the last couple of days.

Dalint · 21/08/2022 13:57

It's a bit late for Truss to try to avoid foot-in-mouth. She has fucked up so many times.

I agree that I'm not well informed. But who is? Most people are taking holidays. Most people apart from those with genuine financial interests, are not watching policies right now.

Dalint · 21/08/2022 14:02

There's an element of apathy involved now. Nobody really cares apart from concern as to how their energy prices are going to change.

To survive, you look after yourself first and only then you can look at looking after other people.
It's a primordial survival instinct and we're at that level now. Lofty ideas such as carbon tax get shelved when you do not know whether you'll be able to pay your mortgage.

TheABC · 21/08/2022 14:03

I am ignoring anything they say as:

a) it's not a manifesto pledge - not that it seems to matter any more!
And
b) they will have backers pulling their strings, plus the perfect storm of discontent about to hit this winter.

In a nutshell, they are saying what they need, in order to win the hustings. I am expecting a lot of sudden announcements and a few u-turns over the next sixth months. I will also be surprised if they serve out the entire two years.

Dalint · 21/08/2022 14:04

Most of the taxes on energy are sold as carbon taxes for carbon emissions. People who care about the environment suddenly find themselves not condoning a tax that leaves them unable to provide heating for their children.

Dalint · 21/08/2022 14:07

It's not an entirely unusual time. History repeats. When it comes down to life or death, you will protect your home and your children first.

Dalint · 21/08/2022 14:08

Let there be no equivocation. People will die as a result of the current energy crisis. They will lose their health, their homes and some people will die.

Dalint · 21/08/2022 14:09

We're back to a primal sense of survival, unless of course, you're rich.

Dalint · 21/08/2022 14:12

It's why Sunak is trying to appease the masses by barely keeping them alive with enough to provide the most basic level of funding to heat their homes while we continue to pander to Putin and his nuclear arsenal. Lol.

Truss? She actually has not one clue what is going on in my opinion.

Dalint · 21/08/2022 14:13

I did suggest taking Putin out a couple weeks ago, but assassination was frowned upon 😁

Sporty2022 · 21/08/2022 18:55

I wouldn’t pay too much to those government polls. Even if labour are in the lead. Doesn’t mean that much to be honest and there isn’t a GE until 2024.

Sporty2022 · 21/08/2022 18:57

But if one man can cause this much global turmoil to the extreme that economies are damaged and people die, surely maybe getting rid of him becomes more viable??

Blossomtoes · 21/08/2022 18:58

If Truss makes it to 2024 I’ll eat my handbag.

Sporty2022 · 21/08/2022 19:05

I imagine the next Tory leader ( Truss) will survive two years. Unless a vote of no confidence happens. Or serious calls for a GE.
The Tories won’t want a GE now, so they’ll let Liz Truss carry on until then.
By then most of those shysters in the cabinet would have been looking for alternative jobs with their mates in the city. And leave the shit for another government to tidy up. Because they know they probably won’t win , or lose a majority government.

Weirdly those that want Truss to be the new leader probably know she won’t win an election.

The Tories are fucked- they lost Boris and Brexit is done. They’ve nothing to offer.

Sporty2022 · 21/08/2022 19:08

I’ll repeat. Most of the Tory MPs will
be looking for new jobs just before the next GE. The corrupt twats already have fingers in pies with their old private school mates getting them higher paid jobs in other companies.
They’ll be on LinkedIn soon enough I bet.

Dalint · 22/08/2022 10:38

The Independent doesn't seem too fond of Truss either.

Editorial from Independent

This is partly due to what seems to be a headstrong, wilful and reckless streak in Ms Truss’s personality. Put simply, she seems to be looking for a fight with the unions – and there is no shortage of battlegrounds.

And it appears she has done a u-turn or 'softened' her stance 😁
Another article from Independent

^...Ms Truss softened her stance on providing help for families over the winter, saying she would provide support “across the board”. The foreign secretary had previously insisted she was focused on tax cuts rather than what she termed “giving out handouts”.

Apologies for not having looked at multiple sources. I can't be assed googling her but these struck me this morning. Struck fear into my soul to be precise!!! 😧

Blossomtoes · 21/08/2022 18:58

It might be all you'll have left to eat haha. I hope it's leather, or you could end up going the way of the whales if it's plastic. 😜

Festoonlights · 22/08/2022 14:06

If the independent hate her then that is good news! If she has earned their wrath she must be a bone fide conservative, like princess and the pea.

I am not partial to all of this angst, they will cobble together a winter care package - we will limp through to the spring by which time many of the solutions will be up and running (see telegraph for details) and the issue will recede. Like all the others in life. Replaced by another lite waves lapping the shore.

Blossomtoes · 22/08/2022 14:11

I think you’ll find bona fide conservatism is a very tarnished brand. And will be more so in the spring when we’re in full flood recession. This is the most frightening economic environment of my life time - and I was born in 1953 so I’ve witnessed scary times - it won’t just recede next spring. In fact it will be substantially worse by then.

Festoonlights · 22/08/2022 14:21

You are wrong. Read the actual economic forecasts rather than listen to media hyperbole blossom.

DowningStreetParty · 22/08/2022 14:22

Perhaps you could share some links Festoon because it’s looking very grim indeed to the rest of us.

Cineworld is preparing for bankruptcy with debts of 4 billion?

There's no hyperbole.
