To be starting to really worry about Liz Truss

OK, so I'm not a Tory. I hate Boris, and despise the rest of them. I don't hold or much hope of any of them actually doing anything to address the problems that we're currently facing, because I don't think any of them actually give a toss about ordinary people. Of the two candidates that are left in the Tory leadership contest, I would pick Rishi, because I think he has a more realistic understanding of the economic challenges, but obviously, I'm not a party member so I have no say in the matter.

Nevertheless, I have been relatively sanguine and the prospect of Liz Truss as leader, a) because I figured that things couldn't get much worse than the shit show that we have had under Boris, and b) because I am pretty sure that she will be utterly unelectable when it comes to the next general election, so worst case scenario would be that we have another couple of years of crappy Tory government, exacerbated by the cost of living crisis, and then we can be pretty confident of getting shot of them. So, pretty shit all in all, but survivable.

But listening to everything that she is saying she wants to do, to the economic forecasts, and to the analysis from both within and beyond the Tory party, I'm starting to get really very worried. All this talk of huge tax cuts and massive reductions in public spending...I fear that she is going to make the looming economic crisis infinitely worse at a time when we can least afford to risk it. Nearly all economists seem to agree that her plans are going to make things worse, not better.

We are already at breaking point. Public services are on their knees. Businesses are struggling to stay afloat. People both in work and out of work are struggling. The most vulnerable are already having to choose between bare essentials such as eating and heating. Inflation continues to soar, energy prices are going off the scale, interest rates are going up... and she is about to make it worse! We just don't have the resilience in the system to cope with this.

I am actually very worried about what is going to happen. This could be very bad indeed, and a lot of people are going to suffer. If we end up with austerity on steroids in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis, there will be massive civil unrest, surely?

Truss has not delivered a single trade deal that is an improvement on what we had in the EU.

Grantanow · 10/08/2022 10:39

And her claim to have negotiated wonderful trade deals is laughable. They are almost all carbon copies of deals we already had through the EU. Where is the much promised trade deal with the US? And remember the EU was our largest trading partner - what about a decent deal with them instead of the hopeless form-tilling, lack of personal mobility to work in the UK and the other ridiculous details dumped on our businesses by Johnson and Frost? She is clearly deluded and hopeless.

Rapidtango · 10/08/2022 11:09

Grantanow, exactly - it's the Peter Principle in all it's glory.

saraclara · 10/08/2022 11:43

What I'd give for some gravitas from PM candidates. I think the days of some dignity in power are over.

They're both just throwing bones to the most bigoted section of society to win their vote. And the spectacle of cabinet ministers and MP's choosing one side over another (and now even swapping sides) in order to curry favour with the the next leader and get the good jobs, is absolutely shameful.

SleeplessInEngland · 10/08/2022 11:45

Truss has lived up to incredibly low expectations but I think the surprise is that Sunak's been a trainwreck. Admitting that you've only just used contactless for the first time doesn't exactly play down your billionaire Daddy's boy image.

DowningStreetParty · 10/08/2022 11:45

Exactly. Brexit has been a complete shitshow economically and she’s just stuck a little teeny-tiny minute sticking plaster on that huge gaping self- inflicted wound. While at the same time saying a lot of other stupid and dangerous things that she plans to do. Well done her! Let’s give her the Premiership without her actually being elected by the people...

DowningStreetParty · 10/08/2022 11:50

I couldn’t agree more SaraClara. Politics as public service seems to have been kicked out of the Tory party by Boris, alongside their moderates on Brexit and anyone else who might have challenged Boris at any time. It’s dragging the whole of our democracy down this self-serving corrupt behaviour.

Jansobieski · 10/08/2022 12:04

@Bollindger politically biased and losing side ? 😂
Maybe most people agree that she's hopelessly incompetent ? And the only folk losing actually is us, the ordinary folk in the UK.

Your username should win an award 😆

The problem is that she may well get voted in and people think we're stupid? Sunak is a banker but a clever one or he wouldn't have married a billionaire's wife or made it as a banker nor made it as an MP. I tend to like clever people in office rather than utter cunts.

I know that it's not up to us, but seriously, your gym membership and your chicken curry is at stake here. I don't like either of them. I don't identify with either of them. I don't generally identify with the Leaders of Britain so it's not entirely unusual. That woman though, gives me the heebygeebies!

Dalint · 10/08/2022 22:01

I genuinely sense danger watching her. I can't describe it other than you're walking down a dark alley and you can hear footsteps behind you. It's that sort of primordial fear.

I wonder could we set up the Downing Street Party Party?

I have been reading the posts on this thread, and it is amazing how politically bias the thread is and like most of the mumsnet political threads it is on the losing side. Truss will win, she must have something inside that is completely sailing over your heads. She has made some amazing trade deals, shocking good according to the surprised media, so either she has staying power and would win at poker, or she amassed a great team to support her and took their good advice. Either should make her a fantastic PM if she takes no shit.

Hi again, Liz.

What utter nonsense you are spouting.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2022 00:25

Spin Lizzie

Love this!

The second part of your post is what makes me the saddest - the spectacle of MPs obviously trying to secure a future job - Tom Tughenhat I am definitely looking at you - is so depressing- but as their leader Boris Johnson is the epitome of "look around and see who's going to benefit me the most - regardless of what I really believe and sod everyone else" it shouldn't really be a surprise.

Blossomtoes · 11/08/2022 10:33

I really hope we’re watching the dying throes of the current iteration of Tories. It would do them the world of good to have at least a decade in opposition to reflect on the cesspit Johnson’s made of them and have a good rethink about the party they need to be.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2022 10:34

It isn't a surprise, no, but it's still fucking depressing.

vera99 · 11/08/2022 10:50

One could almost posit they are looting the country before the game is up. I'll take that back "could" they have and are. Truss is the third rater nominal head whilst the DM feeds" woke mobs" and look over there Kate's recycled a Zara dress.

This is brilliant...

From Twitter. These people tell us who they are all the time:

"Iain Duncan Smith, addressing a Conservative religious group, says he “hates” the fact they banned conversion therapy and that Liz Truss agrees with him."

vera99 · 11/08/2022 13:16

First Liz for Leader Truss bottled doing an interview with Andrew Neil, now she’s bottling doing one with Nick Robinson. She hasn’t got what it takes to be Prime Minister and almost everyone knows it. Now, where's that fridge? Apparently, Johnson popped his read round the corner of the energy chiefs summit at No 10 just to say goodbye. #asleepatthewheel

Blossomtoes · 11/08/2022 13:18

This is the first government I can ever remember that thought media engagement was optional. If she’s scared of Nick Robinson and Andrew Neil, she’s really not up to being PM.

It is optional in the sense that her current audience is existing Tory party members.

She has probably been told that her ratings plummet every time she opens her mouth 😂

the80sweregreat · 11/08/2022 13:35

Nick Robinson did say last night at the end of Rishi Sunak's interview on bbc one that he would welcome doing an interview with Liz Truss, but I had the feeling he wasn't holding his breath!

boys3 · 11/08/2022 14:28

apologies for lowering the tone into conspiracy theories. However bear with:

Winter of Discontent 1978/79 - Callaghan government knows the tide is turning. But they take the long-term view, creating the ultimate sleeper agent to in the early 2020s become fully activated. Surely that must be Liz.

More seriously compared with what's coming the '78/79 WoD was really a sideshow.
