To be starting to really worry about Liz Truss

OK, so I'm not a Tory. I hate Boris, and despise the rest of them. I don't hold or much hope of any of them actually doing anything to address the problems that we're currently facing, because I don't think any of them actually give a toss about ordinary people. Of the two candidates that are left in the Tory leadership contest, I would pick Rishi, because I think he has a more realistic understanding of the economic challenges, but obviously, I'm not a party member so I have no say in the matter.

Nevertheless, I have been relatively sanguine and the prospect of Liz Truss as leader, a) because I figured that things couldn't get much worse than the shit show that we have had under Boris, and b) because I am pretty sure that she will be utterly unelectable when it comes to the next general election, so worst case scenario would be that we have another couple of years of crappy Tory government, exacerbated by the cost of living crisis, and then we can be pretty confident of getting shot of them. So, pretty shit all in all, but survivable.

But listening to everything that she is saying she wants to do, to the economic forecasts, and to the analysis from both within and beyond the Tory party, I'm starting to get really very worried. All this talk of huge tax cuts and massive reductions in public spending...I fear that she is going to make the looming economic crisis infinitely worse at a time when we can least afford to risk it. Nearly all economists seem to agree that her plans are going to make things worse, not better.

We are already at breaking point. Public services are on their knees. Businesses are struggling to stay afloat. People both in work and out of work are struggling. The most vulnerable are already having to choose between bare essentials such as eating and heating. Inflation continues to soar, energy prices are going off the scale, interest rates are going up... and she is about to make it worse! We just don't have the resilience in the system to cope with this.

I am actually very worried about what is going to happen. This could be very bad indeed, and a lot of people are going to suffer. If we end up with austerity on steroids in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis, there will be massive civil unrest, surely?

Currently Truss has ruled out energy bill 'handouts'. Which means she's either

A) a pyschopath who really believes what's coming is no big deal or

B) she's about to do another massive u-turn, much like her predecessor

vera99 · 09/08/2022 16:49

@Sporty2022 Or windfall tax the main energy companies most of which are foreign state-owned. But no the Tories don't rock the private enterprise boat (more like corporate monopolists) because they are their big backers.

vera99 · 09/08/2022 16:58

Bit of a derail and this is a long watch but the most revelatory film about how a post-imperial Britain pivoted from Empire to being banker (and money launderer) of the world and how we have been paying the bills in a post-manufacturing era. Perfidious Albion is an apt name for us.

Michael Oswald's film The Spider's Web reveals how at the demise of empire, City of London financial interests created a web of secrecy jurisdictions that captured wealth from across the globe and hid it in a web of offshore islands. Today, up to half of global offshore wealth is hidden in British jurisdictions and Britain and its dependencies are the largest global players in the world of international finance.

It'll be yet another volte face for Truss. She's done that many U turns we call her Spin Lizzy in this house.🙄

the80sweregreat · 09/08/2022 17:19

Spin Lizzy ! Good one.

BrokeAsABone · 09/08/2022 17:29

If Truss wins and gets rid of the Protocol, which is working and actually has the support of most parties and people in NI, then we can all expect a trade war where things will get a whole lot worse.

vera99 · 09/08/2022 17:41

There's talk on the Torygraph of her getting Lord Frost in the Cabinet - he's the current holier than thou, slightly more intelligent Brexit rent-a-gob at the moment. Sad that a distinguished diplomat has gone rogue so spectacular. Bag carriers for big business.

Fladdermus · 09/08/2022 17:59

But Lord Frost doesn't believe in unelected bureaucrats making decisions for the country. Surely he wouldn't accept a position as an unelected bureaucrat.

Blossomtoes · 09/08/2022 18:59

I have no idea why it’s legal for cabinet ministers to be unelected.

vera99 · 09/08/2022 19:22

Lord Frost like Johnson before him is a gob for hire with his nose up the establishment's arse asking "where do I lick". Apologies if you are eating or about to...

Zilla1 · 09/08/2022 21:24

@Blossomtoes could be wrong but think it's 'legal' for the PM to come from the House of Lords though the convention is that they'll be an MP able to answer questions in the commons. Need to check but think Sir Alec Douglas Home started his tenure as PM from the HoL and last one to govern entirely from HoL was until 1902?

Blossomtoes · 09/08/2022 21:29

I’m sure you’re right. It’s not very democratic though. So much for Brexiteers and their respect for democracy.

Bollindger · 10/08/2022 07:57

I have been reading the posts on this thread, and it is amazing how politically bias the thread is and like most of the mumsnet political threads it is on the losing side. Truss will win, she must have something inside that is completely sailing over your heads. She has made some amazing trade deals, shocking good according to the surprised media, so either she has staying power and would win at poker, or she amassed a great team to support her and took their good advice. Either should make her a fantastic PM if she takes no shit.

Rapidtango · 10/08/2022 08:20

'amazing trade deals' 🤣🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭ost of them are pretty much copycat deals of those we already had under the EU. The most important deal we need is one with our closest trading partner, you know, the EU.

DowningStreetParty · 10/08/2022 09:27

‘Amazing trade deals’.. Hmm

Dalint · 10/08/2022 09:41

article re Truss Sunak and 55% agree with not paying energy bills

Came across this today. She is holding firm on not giving money. Everyone is saying the same thing at this point. This energy crisis is going to be Armageddon. It will not just be the have-nots who can't pay. The lower end of the 'haves' won't be able to pay either!

Skodacool · 10/08/2022 09:42

Truss has said she will stop the parliamentary investigation into whether Johnson lied over Partygate if she wins. Says it all about her ‘morals’. (

Dalint · 10/08/2022 09:46

Also, this was on Tiktok the other day Opinion on not paying bills

Dalint · 10/08/2022 09:53

I said this at the beginning about Putin and Ukraine. He has us over a barrel (an oil drum haha). They need to start bombing that fucker at this point! I cannot think of any alternative at this point.

Dalint · 10/08/2022 09:54

At this point I have realised that I have said 'at this point' 3 times in 5 minutes at this point 😳

Dalint · 10/08/2022 09:58

Seriously though, something drastic needs to be done and quickly! Truss will not deal with the EU if she takes over and a joint effort is going to be required. She could very well be not only the biggest threat to the UK for a long time, but also the biggest threat to world peace! Between fucking covid and fucking Putin and fucking Boris and fucking Truss, I am at breaking point.

She has made some amazing trade deals, shocking good according to the surprised media, so either she has staying power and would win at poker, or she amassed a great team to support her and took their good advice. Either should make her a fantastic PM if she takes no shit.

Its very simple.

Shes going to give her super rich friends in the media/buisness a nice fat tax cut with which they can spend more money buying property/other poorer buisnesses, etc. Its why the conservative party members (the majority of whom are at the very least upper middle class) love her, because they are going to be getting more money in thier back pocket.

Thats what she has on Rishi, whom isn;'t prepared to cut taxes = less money for those rich people.

To the common person, those cuts taxes will at best give an extra 2-4 week headroom with regards to bills. For the poor, they may well just commit seppuku with how bleak their life chances are looking in the next 6-12 months if Liz doesn't do a major U turn.

Dalint · 10/08/2022 10:10

I wonder whether we might lobby Putin to get him to interfere with who gets put into power? We need to either shoot him or join him!
Why can't they assassinate him btw?

Blossomtoes · 10/08/2022 10:23

Either should make her a fantastic PM if she takes no shit.

Dominic Raab - who stands a very good chance of losing his seat at the next election - says electing Truss as leader would be signing an electoral suicide note. I reckon his opinion is worth more than yours @Bollindger.

Grantanow · 10/08/2022 10:29

In her case ambition has outrun ability. There is more than something of the night about her. If she becomes PM it's curtains for the poor and disabled.
