For wanting hairdresser to stop talking

Feeling like a bit of a cow but spent 4 hours in the hairdressers this afternoon. I have two young kids, obviously they take a lot of time. So it’s one of the few chances I have to just sit and have a bit of peace.

I don’t mind a bit of chit chat at the start of the appointment but the whole four hours was just like a running commentary. What she was doing, why she was doing it, what did I normally do.

I did try to read my book but then she kept asking me what it was, was it any good, did I like reading, argghh.

AIBU to have just wanted to have quiet?

I read my book in the hairdresser. I don't have it in me to maintain more than brief conversation with someone who is essentially a stranger. I feel bad and I hope it doesn't come across as standoffish or rude because that isn't my intention at all. It's just one of my social failings.

FunsizedandFabulous · 03/08/2022 19:29

I am shy and my life isn't very interesting. I am not very good at maintaining good conversation. I hate chatty hairdressers. I will discuss with them what I want and anything to do with my hair but after that I'm quiet. I only get my hair cut three to four times a year because I actually hate going and it can be torture. I really don't want to divulge where I'm going on holiday this year thank you.

ivykaty44 · 03/08/2022 22:18

I just shut my eyes, works a treat if I want to be left alone. I don't often spend more than 30 minutes at the hairdressers though

MacKenzieMcHale · 03/08/2022 22:19

I take a book. I find they're usually relieved to see you take it out of your bag, imagine having to have the same conversations with people day in day out, for bloody hours at a time.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 03/08/2022 22:30

I take a book with with me and actually say I'm not being rude I'm just shattered with work and the kids and want to relax 🤣

surreygirl1987 · 03/08/2022 23:05

yes just talk to people for gods sake its sociable. Who reads a book in the hairdressers

Uh, me.

OP, I actually choose my hairdresser not only on how good my hair looks, but also if I have a decent overall experience. I tried a new one recently as I'd moved house. It was noisy, she didn't stop jabbering on to me despite me clearly trying to read, and it was just a looooong 4 hours. Hair wasn't even that great. So I went back to my old hairdressers despite a longer journey. We have a bit of pleasant chit chat at the beginning and then he leaves me alone to read. It's great (and he manages it in 3 hours not 4!).

I have a mobile hairdresser come to me who just does a wet cut and then goes and just a 15 minute chat and that's it. I won't use a salon ever again because of the noise. Having your hair done is suppose to be a relaxing time and. Not for. Constant earache

Stickworm · 03/08/2022 23:21

A friend of mine was telling me about the salon she goes to and you can specifically book a quiet appointment - can’t remember the wording or anything but when you book online there’s something you can click/select to make it clear you don’t want to chat 🤣

I get you op
my hairdresser makes me feel physically sick with her voice droning on and on and on and on.
She cannot bear any silence at all.
I go rarely because I just can’t stand it and I have to work my self up in preparation for going.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 03/08/2022 23:35

I’ve been seeing my stylist for about 10 years now (aside- where the hell did all that time go). She’s chatty, I can be, but not always. Luckily we found our groove early on. She has two modes, running commentary and conversation. She’s pretty good about going into running commentary if I mention it’s been a long day or a long week. And mostly I can half listen and throw in the odd comment. I honestly think she just has a daily script for her stories.

I will warn her if I’m grumpy, then we have a quiet appointment.

Honestly, she’s magic with color, so I really don’t care what happens in the appointment. She’s that good with color.

Why on earth don't you change hairdresser?!
